Hearing the word “save,” Luo Qiao locked up her bike and hurried over. An elderly man lay on the ground, and while someone had already gone to call for emergency services, nobody knew what to do for him.
Luo Qiao stepped forward and saw that the situation was critical; she deduced it was a cerebral hemorrhage. But being in a foreign country, she could only say in fluent English, “Could I take a look at him? I am a doctor, a Chinese international student from Harvard Medical School.”
Seeing that people were hesitant to let her act, she continued, “He’s in danger. If emergency services aren’t rendered immediately, we might miss the best chance to save him.”
An elderly lady said, “Oh, let the Eastern girl try. Maybe what she’s saying is true.”
With some looks exchanged among them, they finally nodded their agreement. Luo Qiao turned the patient’s head to one side to prevent saliva or vomit from being inhaled into the airway.
She quickly loosened the patient’s collar and loudly said, “Please give us some space to ensure air circulation.”
Hearing the man’s strong snoring, Luo Qiao pulled out a handkerchief from her pocket, wrapped it around the patient’s tongue, and gently pulled it out as he opened his mouth.
Then she said to the people around, “Could someone bring me a cold towel?”
It was the elderly lady who had spoken before who turned and left, soon returning with a bowl of cool water. She wrung out a towel and handed it to Luo Qiao. Luo Qiao then covered the patient’s head with the cold towel to constrict the blood vessels and reduce the bleeding.
Just as she finished tending to the patient, the ambulance arrived. The attending medic said that the first aid had been very well done; otherwise, the consequences would have been unthinkable. People around started clapping their hands.
