She also packed some seafood and fruits. In the end, she included some cured fish and meats she had made before, filling up two woven bags. She only took a small amount of fresh vegetables, enough for a day or two, figuring she would make another trip closer to the New Year, fearing they wouldn’t keep if she took them too early.
After leaving her space, she checked for any flaws and then moved the items to the roadside. Not far from there was a freight yard, and she thought about waiting for a tricycle to help her with the delivery. But after a long wait, none came.
“If it really doesn’t work out, I’ll just have to move them slowly,” Luo Qiao thought. It wasn’t that far, anyway. Just as she had this thought, she heard someone call out, “Qiaoqiao, is that you?”
Turning around, she saw her master and his wife approaching.

Feng Shumin asked, “When did you get back?”
Luo Qiao sheepishly replied, “It’s been a few days. I thought you hadn’t started your holiday yet, so I didn’t e over.”
She turned and pointed to the two woven bags on the roadside, “Jiancheng, I was just worrying about how to get these bags back home, you see?”
Looking at the two hefty bags, Yang Jiancheng worried the neighbors might once again accuse his apprentice of being wasteful. Picking up a bag, he said, “You two wait here, I’ll be right back.”
Luo Qiao laughed, “Master must be worried about people gossiping again. Auntie, it’s quite cold today, and there aren’t many people around. Let’s take these back together, so we don’t freeze out here.”
Feng Shumin laughed, “You two are really cut from the same cloth. He’s worried the neighbors will gossip about you being wasteful, and you’re worried about him overexerting himself. Always ing up with nonsense excuses, I surrender to you both.”
After they got home and Feng Shumin saw the things Luo Qiao brought, she asked, “Qiaoqiao, where did you get all this stuff from?”
As Luo Qiao poured herself a glass of water, she said, “I invested some money into a partnership with a restaurant, and I had them prepare these items. It saves you from having to go out into the cold. Besides, it looks like it might snow soon, so you might not be able to buy better stuff than this later on. Moreover, getting it directly from them is cheaper. I’ll send over more fresh vegetables in a few days.”
Yang Jiancheng came out from the inner room with a wad of money and handed it to Luo Qiao, “Take this. We can’t let you foot the bill; you’re still a student.”
Luo Qiao replied, “Jiancheng, don’t you know I have ine from my writing? It’s because of the good upbringing from you and Auntie that I’m capable now. It’s only right for me to repay my master and his wife.”
Yang Jiancheng said, “We have money on hand now. If we don’t give it to you, who knows when those heartless cretins might get their hands on it. Even if we have no use for it, it’s better safe with you.”
Feng Shumin sighed, “Listen to your master and keep it all. It’s not safe to leave it in the house, anyway.”
Luo Qiao looked at her master and his wife and asked, “Did they e to you for money again?”
Yang Jiancheng replied, “Even if they asked, they wouldn’t get it. I’d rather donate it than give it to them. So, quickly put the money away and try not to e around here too often, so they don’t start targeting you.”
