Luo Qiao chuckled, “Big Brother, you should hurry up and find a wife, so she can make it for you. Wouldn’t that be great?”
Luo Siyuan turned around to look at his sister, “You should be saying that to Big Brother and Second Brother first; they haven’t taken wives yet. As the younger brother, how can I have the cheek to jump the queue?”
Luo Qiao stood up to pour herself a glass of water, “I reckon Big Brother will get married soon. I just urged him about marriage today. Big Brother said that he will find a time to bring it up with Professor Woo and see what they think.”
Luo Haotian, after hearing this, “Did your Big Brother really say that?”
“Could I possibly be lying to you all? After the New Year, Big Brother will be twenty-six. I guess he realizes too that he’s blocking the way for the rest of us brothers, so he’s definitely considered it already. But I bet Professor Woo wants to keep his daughter home for the holidays. It’s more likely they will marry after the New Year. Grandma has already started preparing things for Big Brother’s wedding.”
Luo Haotian said, “Then I’d better hurry and send some money to Grandma. Forget it, I’d better go over in person after I get my paycheck in a few days. It’ll be good to discuss this matter with your grandparents as well.”
Luo Qiao stood up, “Dad, Big Brother, I brought some ingredients over. I put them all in that big clay jar outside; with this cold weather, they won’t spoil. There are some dried bamboo shoots, too—they taste really good fried with meat.”
Luo Haotian said, “Don’t worry about us; we are both busy and haven’t been cooking much at home recently.”
Luo Qiao asked, “I heard that the seeding machine has started mass production?”
Luo Haotian laughed, “Yes, the warehouse already has more than a hundred units, and we reckon we’ll produce another three hundred before spring. The main issue is the shortage of raw materials; otherwise, we could have made even more. The factory has already sent people to make purchases directly, hoping everything goes smoothly.”
Luo Qiao thought of her own base, “Dad, I’d like to order a batch.”
Luo Haotian asked, “What do you need them for?”
Luo Qiao considered her words before responding, “The farm you guys were experimenting on was a joint venture I got into with someone else.”
Both Luo Haotian and Luo Siyuan were shocked, with Luo Siyuan being the first to grow impatient, “Qiaoqiao, do you even know what you’re talking about?”
Luo Qiao rolled her eyes, “Of course, I know what I’m saying, what about it?”
She then looked at Luo Haotian, “Dad, I’ve had quite a bit of royalty and publishing fees before, and I thought about investing in something. I stumbled upon this project and put some money into it.”
Luo Haotian said, “You girl, did such a big thing without making a sound, even more impressive than your brothers. Even I don’t have such nerve.”
Luo Qiao giggled, “Dad, don’t say that. I was just lucky. After all, “food is the paramount necessity of the people,” and although our base doesn’t grow grains, vegetables are indispensable on every family’s dinner table. The business is doing quite well; at least I’ve almost recouped the initial investment.”
Luo Siyuan asked with some curiosity, “Qiaoqiao, tell Big Brother, how much did you invest back then?”
Luo Qiao looked at Big Brother, gestured for him to e closer, and when Luo Siyuan leaned in, Luo Qiao whispered in his ear, “I’m not telling you.”
After saying that, she laughed and ran out of the yard, with the siblings chasing each other around the courtyard, which eventually turned into a snowball fight.
Standing by the window, Luo Haotian looked at his children chasing each other in the courtyard, feeling both proud and a little lost; after all, he realized he hadn’t truly understood his daughter.
Having had her fill of fun, Luo Qiao finally showed Luo Siyuan the ingredients she had brought over. Inside were two frozen fish, two prepared chickens and rabbits, as well as cured fish, cured sausages, and meat—enough to last their father and son duo a while.
Luo Siyuan couldn’t help but ask, “Qiaoqiao, are you heading out on a long trip again?”
Luo Qiao burst into laughter and gave a thumbs-up, “Big Brother really understands me.”
Luo Siyuan said, “It’s just over a month until the New Year; are you still running off?”
Luo Qiao smiled, “Some medicinal herbs are only found in the south, and I have some other business to attend to.”
Luo Qiao had previously contacted one of Luo Haotian’s old rades to help her procure a batch of good tea, so she wasn’t worried about them calling to ask.
