Yang Family

Yang Ming’s mother dampened a cloth and wiped the blood off Yang Xiaocui’s forehead as she lay on the kang with her eyes tightly shut.

The little girl had a big lump on her forehead, clearly from bumping into sothing.

Yang Ming’s mother had no idea what exactly happened. She only heard from the villagers that Yang Xiaocui was supposed to beco her daughter-in-law, aning she would beco the fourth son’s wife.

The marriage of her fourth son had always been a headache for her, so she paid special attention to the girls of suitable age in the village.

Yang Xiaocui wasn’t much in appearance and didn’t talk much usually, but she was a hard worker.

She wasn’t soone who judged by appearance anyway, since her three daughters-in-law were not outstanding in looks either.

But Yang Xiaocui’s family circumstances were really indescribable...

However, if her fourth son agreed this ti, she wouldn’t object, as the girl was actually quite nice.

While Yang Ming’s mother was thinking about these things, she heard soone shouting outside, "Sister-in-law, where’s my Xiaocui!"

It was obviously Lan Hua’s voice. Yang Ming’s mother quickly got up and went out, "Aunt Lan Hua, your Xiaocui is in our house."

Aunt Lan Hua hurriedly followed inside, calling, "Xiaocui, Xiaocui."

When she entered and saw her little daughter lying there quietly with a large lump on her head, she quickly shook her daughter’s arm, "Xiaocui, what happened to you? Wake up quickly."

"Aunt Lan Hua, you’d better not shake her, in case sothing else happens. My fourth son went to town to find a doctor. He’ll be back soon."

Hearing this, Aunt Lan Hua stopped shaking her daughter and, with tears in her eyes, grasped Yang Ming’s mother’s hand, "Sister-in-law, oh, no, I should call you in-laws now. In-laws, your Yang Dong is a good boy. If my Xiaocui marries your Yang Dong, as a mother, I’d be at ease."

"I never thought these two kids would end up together."

Hearing herself called in-laws, Yang Ming’s mother felt quite uneasy and quickly said, "Aunt Lan Hua, I still don’t know what’s going on. Don’t call in-laws just yet. I’ll ask my fourth son when he gets back."

"In-laws, it’s really our Xiaocui’s fault. You see, your Yang Dong kindly helped my Xiaocui, and yet my Xiaocui... sigh." Aunt Lan Hua wasn’t one to be unreasonable or use foul language; she knew how to speak well and started by admitting her daughter’s fault.

Then she continued, "But no matter what, my Xiaocui is a young girl. She couldn’t think things through. With rumors spreading about her being carried on soone’s back, her reputation would be ruined and she wouldn’t find a husband. In a mont of folly, she ran into a tree. Luckily, your Yang Dong is a good boy and agreed to marry my Xiaocui—otherwise, who knows what might have happened to her. You know how villagers gossip. If your Yang Dong doesn’t marry Xiaocui, she really wouldn’t have a way to live. We’re all mothers; no one wants their daughter seeking death."

Yang Ming’s mother was never good with words, and she had a soft heart. Hearing the full story, she thought it made a lot of sense. After all, her daughter’s reputation was ruined, even to the point of seeking death. She said, "Aunt Lan Hua, since things have co to this point, once the child wakes up and my fourth son and my husband return, we’ll discuss this matter carefully. If my fourth son agrees, we won’t stop it."
