Xiaocui and Yang Dong’s affairs haven’t particularly caught Xiaoxiao’s attention lately, as she’s been busy with sothing else these days, which is sprouting soybeans.
The idea popped into her head during a dinner at the old house, where she had temporarily agreed to let her third uncle’s family strike out on their own, rembering they were a tofu-making family constantly dealing with soybeans.
If her third uncle’s family continues handling the soybeans, they surely would be happy to, as they’re already familiar with the process. Villagers wouldn’t raise any suspicion over them buying beans.
Though this place has tofu, it really doesn’t have bean sprouts, nor soybean oil.
Oil here is made by rendering pork fat. Though she knows soybeans can be pressed for oil, she hadn’t done it herself. However, she could share the idea with her third uncle’s family for them to explore, assuming they’d figure it out since they can make tofu.
Though pressing soybean oil is beyond her, sprouting the beans surely isn’t.
The past year was busy and she haven’t got around to this. Now is just the opportunity.
If this works out, wouldn’t it add another dish in winter?
Today, Xiaoxiao’s bean sprouts finally turned out well. Looking at the long, white, tender sprouts, she bead with joy, finally able to offer her third uncle’s family an explanation.
She brought her well-sprouted beans to her third uncle’s house.
Like other families, they too were sitting in the yard husking corn. As she entered the yard, she called out, "Third Uncle, Third Aunt."
"Oh, Yang Ming’s wife is here, co on in," Yang Sanzhu’s wife imdiately rose to greet Xiaoxiao.
Xiaoxiao cut straight to the point, "Third Aunt, I’m here about the matter we discussed earlier about your family striking out to earn Silver. I’ve been busy these days, you must be anxious."
"Oh, not anxious, at all. Once you say it, it will surely happen."
"Alright then, Third Uncle, Third Aunt, let’s go inside to talk rather than sitting in the yard."
Seeing Xiaoxiao’s mysterious deanor, everyone paused their work and led her inside.
Once inside, Xiaoxiao showed everyone the sprouted beans. She had purposely pinched off the ends of the sprouts, as she’s always had this habit when eating them. Here it’s not necessary since everything is natural, unlike in modern days where there might be traces of toxins.
She did it just to add a touch of mystery, having pinched only a small portion, with many still intact.
Sure enough, everyone was surprised by the pinched-off ends, "Yang Ming’s wife, what is this?"
Xiaoxiao then took out a pack of sprouts without pinched-off ends and explained, "These are bean sprouts made from soybeans."
Upon seeing the un-pinched sprouts, everyone recognized them, as the soybean remnants were still visible. Xiaoxiao continued, "These are the bean sprouts made from soybeans. We’re short on vegetables during the winter, and if you make these from soybeans, they can certainly bring in money."
Everyone’s eyes lit up upon hearing this. In winter, there’re only potatoes, cabbages, daikon radishes, carrots, and really no other vegetables.
If there’s such a vegetable, it could surely be sold!
But how exactly should this be eaten?
Is it tasty?
"Yang Ming’s wife, I believe this could sell, but how should we prepare it? Is it tasty? Could you cook it for us to try?"
