If a 2nd stage cultivator attacked him, the Talisman wouldn't be able to protect him fully; he'd incur a few injuries. But if a 3rd stage attacked him, he'd survive, but left with almost fatal injuries.
anwhile, the [Branch of Ygdrassil Talisman] allowed him to perfectly absorb the attack of a 3rd stage Nascent Spirit cultivator. However, like all talismans, it was a one-use item. So if a 1st stage cultivator attacked him, the talisman would get used up regardless if it was a weaker attack.

Both options were good for specific conditions. The [Turtle] for longevity in a fight, while the [Branch] for an escape route.
