Signed: *Elara Blackwood*
Sealed: *Imperial Regent Seal*
Dated: *Three weeks prior*
Iris took the docunt with shaking hands, reading it twice. "She... she planned for this. Weeks ago."
"She plans for everything," Ken said quietly. "That’s who she is."
Marcus leaned over Iris’s shoulder, scanning the text. "The imperial seal is genuine. I’ve seen enough official docunts to recognize it. And the handwriting matches Her Highness’s style." He looked at Ken. "You’ve been carrying this for three weeks?"
"She gave it to the day after the first serious assassination attempt. Said it was ’probability managent’—if soone ever succeeded in incapacitating her without killing her, we’d need a way to maintain governnt stability while she recovered." Ken’s voice was steady despite his exhaustion. "She didn’t expect poison specifically. She just knew that gaps in leadership create opportunities for enemies."
"This is insane," Iris whispered, still staring at the docunt. "She authorized to impersonate her. To wear her face. To sit in etings and pretend to be the acting regent of the empire."
"Not pretend," Ken corrected. "Maintain the illusion. Derti and Mira will make the actual decisions. You just have to be seen. Look healthy. Look functional. Keep anyone from realizing she’s actually vulnerable right now."
Another magical discharge pulsed from Elara’s unconscious form, strong enough to make the lamps flicker. Ken flinched but held his position.
"We need to move fast," he said. "Whoever sent that poison is probably watching. Waiting to see if she appears in public tomorrow. If she doesn’t show, they’ll know the poison worked, and they’ll escalate. But if ’she’ appears—" he gestured to Iris, "—at her scheduled morning administrative review, looking perfectly fine, then whoever did this will think it failed."
"And they’ll make a mistake," Marcus finished, understanding dawning. "They’ll get frustrated. Sloppy. Maybe try again and reveal themselves in the process."
"Exactly." Ken looked at each knight in turn. "This isn’t just about protecting Her Highness while she recovers. This is about using her own contingency plan to turn their attack back on them."
Iris’s hands were still shaking, but her voice steadied. "If I do this—if I wear her face and sit in her chair—what exactly am I authorized to do?"
"Nothing," Ken said bluntly. "That’s the point. You smile. You nod. You say things like ’I’ll review that and provide guidance later’ or ’Proceed as discussed previously.’ You defer everything to Derti and Mira. Your only job is to be visible and vertical."
"For how long?"
"The docunt says maximum seven days. But realistically?" Ken glanced at Elara, whose magical discharge was finally starting to weaken as her consciousness faded completely. "If the poison is what I think it is based on her symptoms, she’ll be functional again in two or three days. Maybe four at the outside. You just need to cover that gap."
Marcus straightened, decision made. "Then we follow the protocol. Da Iris assus appearance and public role. Sir Ken maintains primary security here. I’ll coordinate the periter lockdown and ensure no one breaches the seal."
He turned to the other knights. "You two—get Lord Derti imdiately. Show him this docunt. He needs to know what’s happening and activate his part of the contingency. Then establish guard rotations for this entire wing. No one gets through. Clear?"
"Sir!" They saluted and moved out quickly.
Iris looked at the docunt one more ti, then at Elara’s unconscious form. "She really did plan for everything."
"She had to," Ken said quietly. "She’s been ruling without a support network, with half the empire trying to kill or undermine her, while implenting reforms that threaten the most powerful families in the realm. Of course she planned for this."
He moved back to Elara’s bedside, checking her pulse, her temperature. The magical discharge was weakening further as she sank deeper into unconsciousness. Good—that ant the imdiate crisis of magical burnout was passing. Now it was just a matter of waiting for the poison to tabolize.
And keeping her alive while it did.
"How long before you can shift?" Ken asked Iris.
"Give thirty minutes to study her features properly. I need to morize everything—the exact shade of her hair, the way she holds her shoulders, her speech patterns, her mannerisms. If I’m going to fool people who see her daily, I can’t make mistakes."
"You have twenty minutes," Ken said. "The morning administrative review starts in two hours. You need to be dressed, prepared, and in that chair looking bored with bureaucracy by then."
Iris nodded sharply. "Then I need to watch recordings of her. Do we have any?"
"mory crystals in her study. Three different etings from last week. Should be enough to get her speech patterns." Marcus was already thinking tactically. "I’ll have soone retrieve them. You study while we set up the security periter."
"And the story?" Iris asked. "If anyone asks why I—why ’she’—seems different?"
Ken didn’t hesitate. "Magical research accident. Minor exposure to unstable compounds. She’s functional but slightly off for a few days while it clears her system. It explains any small discrepancies in behavior."
"That’s... actually believable given her reputation for experintal work."
"She included suggested cover stories in the appendix of the protocol." Ken pointed to additional pages he hadn’t shown yet. "She thought of everything."
The door opened again—this ti it was one of the knights returning with Lord Derti, who looked like he’d aged another five years in the past hour.
"What’s this about a contingency protocol?" Derti demanded, then saw Elara unconscious on the bed, magical energy still sparking faintly around her. His face went pale. "Is she—"
"Alive," Ken said imdiately. "Unconscious. The poison is bad but not fatal. Her body’s fighting it. But we need to implent her ergency plan."
He handed Derti the docunt.
The administrator read it once, quickly, then again more slowly. His expression shifted from shock to grim understanding.
"She authorized this three weeks ago," he said. It wasn’t a question.
"Yes."
"Because she knew sothing like this would happen eventually."
"Yes."
Derti looked at Iris, assessing her with clinical precision. "You can mimic her appearance?"
"Perfectly, my lord. It’s my primary magical ability—glamour and transformation. I can hold her form for days without strain."
"And her mannerisms?"
"I’ll study them. With twenty minutes and the mory crystals, I can approximate well enough to fool casual observers. Anyone who knows her intimately will see through it, but—"
"But those people are either in this room or can be brought into the conspiracy," Derti finished. He made a decision. "Do it. We activate the protocol exactly as written. Da Iris becos the public face. I handle actual governance with Mira. This room seals completely."
He turned to Marcus. "I want a list of everyone who knew Her Highness’s schedule yesterday. Anyone who could have predicted when she’d be alone in her office. That’s our suspect pool."
"Already being compiled, my lord."
"Good." Derti looked back at Elara, sothing complicated crossing his face. "She’s smarter than all of us combined. Even poisoned and unconscious, she’s still ten steps ahead." He touched her hand briefly—carefully, avoiding the magical discharge. "We’ll keep you safe, Your Highness. And we’ll find who did this."
He straightened, command voice activating. "Implentation begins now. Marcus, seal the wing. Iris, study those crystals and be ready to assu position in ninety minutes. Ken, you stay with her and call imdiately if her condition changes. I’ll handle the administrative side and make sure Mira is briefed."
Everyone moved at once, the room becoming a controlled flurry of activity.
Iris took one last look at Elara’s unconscious face—morizing the exact curve of her cheekbone, the way her hair fell, the subtle asymtry of her features that made her distinctive—then left to begin her transformation.
The other knights dispersed to their assigned positions.
Derti paused at the door. "Ken. Keep her alive. That’s your only job."
"I wasn’t planning on doing anything else, my lord."
"Good."
The door closed.
Sealed.
And inside the locked, guarded chamber, Ken sat beside Elara’s bed and settled in for what would likely be the longest night of his life.
Outside, Da Iris began the process of becoming soone else entirely.
The administrative staff prepared for a morning eting with their regent who wasn’t actually their regent.
And sowhere in the palace, whoever had sent that poisoned letter waited to see if their attack had succeeded.
They were about to be very disappointed.
Because Elara had planned for this.
She’d planned for everything.
And her contingency protocols were about to turn their assassination attempt into the trap that would expose them completely.
Efficient.
Thorough.
Irreversible.
Even unconscious, she was still the most dangerous person in the empire.
They just didn’t know it yet.
