They ran until the old bell stopped ringing.

The sound followed them through the channel, deep and slow, striking through the stone above their heads. It did not echo like normal bells. It ca through the walls, through the water, through the wood beneath their boots. Every toll made the lantern fla bend toward the east.

Mina clung to Elara with both arms around her neck. She did not cry loudly anymore. That was worse. Her breath ca in short broken pulls, and every ti Tobin’s boots splashed too close behind them, her fingers dug into Elara’s cloak.

The clean booted man lay behind them on the platform.

Silas did not know if he was dead.

He had stopped breathing. His body had gone limp. His mark had burned under Ravena’s iron ring. But after what the System called him, a vessel, Silas no longer trusted a still body.

rek led them along the narrow platform beside the black water. He had taken off his cap and tied the little brass bell into his coat so it would not move. His face looked pale in the lantern light.

At the third turning, he stopped.

Elara almost ran into him.

"Why are we stopping?" Tobin asked.

rek lifted one hand.

No one spoke.

The water beside the platform had gone still.

Silas raised the lantern.

A shape moved beneath the surface.

Not a fish. Too large. Too slow.

Mina buried her face against Elara’s shoulder.

rek whispered, "Put the light down."

Silas lowered the lantern until the shutter hid most of the fla.

The shape under the water stopped moving.

For a mont, nothing happened.

Then, from beneath the black surface, sothing tapped the wood.

Once.

Twice.

Three tis.

Tobin’s mouth opened, but no sound ca out.

rek did not look away from the water. "Do not answer."

The tapping ca again.

Three slow knocks.

Elara held Mina tighter.

The girl whispered against her cloak, "It knocked before."

Silas turned slightly. "When?"

Mina shook her head. She pressed her face harder into Elara’s shoulder.

Elara spoke softly. "You are safe for now. Tell us what you heard."

The girl’s voice ca small and uneven. "In the dark room. Under the river. It knocked on the floor. They told us not to move when it knocked."

"Who told you?" Silas asked.

"The n with clean boots."

rek closed his eyes for a second.

The tapping stopped.

A thin line of bubbles rose beside the platform.

Then the water moved again, and the shape slipped away into the channel.

No one spoke until it was gone.

Tobin swallowed. "What was that?"

rek opened his eyes. "Sothin not ant to be seen by us."

That was the only answer he gave.

Silas did not press him. Not here.

The System stirred, quieter than before.

[Unclassified Aquatic Presence Detected]

[Hostility: Conditional]

[Trigger Unknown]

[Recomndation: Avoid repetitive sound patterns near water.]

Silas took that in, then looked at the channel ahead.

No tapping. No bells. Only water.

"Move," he said.

They continued.

The channel turned beneath a low arch where old mineral deposits had hardened along the roof. The walls changed after that. The black palace stone gave way to older brick, red beneath the gri. Nas had been carved into the brick wherever hands could reach.

So were fresh.

So had been scratched so many years ago the letters had softened.

Mina lifted her head once and looked at the wall. Her breathing changed.

Elara stopped.

"Mina?"

The girl pointed with a shaking hand.

Silas brought the lantern closer.

There, carved near the bottom row of brick, was the na Orin.

Beside it, another na had been started but not finished.

Mi—

Mina made a small sound and hid her face again.

Tobin turned away.

Silas crouched near the mark.

The cut was shallow. A small hand had made it. The line broke halfway through the second na, as if soone had been pulled away.

The System opened.

[Na Residue Confird]

[Subject: Mina Bell]

[Emotional Trace: Fear, separation, forced movent]

[Recent Passage: Within three days]

[Secondary Trace: Closed Eye Vessel]

The air seed colder when the words faded.

Silas stood.

"They brought her through here," Elara said.

"Yes."

Mina whispered, "There were other children."

Elara did not look at Silas, but he felt the sentence hit them both.

"How many?" he asked.

"I don’t know." Mina’s voice shook. "We were told not to count."

rek looked down the passage. "That is not a kindness."

Silas knew what he ant.

If children were told not to count, then soone feared numbers. Numbers made ledgers. Ledgers made proof.

Tobin spoke carefully. "Where were they taking you?"

Mina wiped her nose against Elara’s cloak, then seed ashad of it. Elara only shifted her grip and said nothing.

"They said east," Mina whispered. "They said the hungry road needed small mouths."

Silas felt his hand tighten.

rek touched the wall beside one of the nas. For once, there was no smile on him, no act.

"They used to move grain through here," he said. "During famine."

"Now they move children," Elara said.

No one answered.

They all understood.

The road had not changed.

Only the cargo.

A sound ca from ahead.

Not a bell.

A door scraping stone.

rek lifted his hand again.

The passage opened into a round chamber with a low ceiling. Four channels t there, black water running under short bridges of stone. On the far side stood an iron gate marked with a crown. To the left, a brick arch bore the faint shape of a stag. To the right, steps climbed toward a sealed door with no mark at all.

In the center of the chamber, a man knelt on the stone.

His hands were bound behind his back.

A sack covered his head.

Tobin drew his sword.

The kneeling man did not move.

rek stared at him. "No."

Silas looked at him. "You know him?"

rek did not answer at once.

Then he said, "Pellan."

Elara’s eyes sharpened. "Pellan is in the palace."

"Then that is not Pellan."

The kneeling man lifted his head.

From beneath the sack ca a muffled voice.

"rek."

The sound was wrong. It carried Pellan’s roughness, the rasp of his broken nose, but there was a wet echo beneath it.

Mina began to tremble.

rek stepped back.

The voice ca again.

"rek. Help ."

Tobin looked from the kneeling man to Silas. "My lord?"

rek shook his head slowly. "Do not go near it."

The System reacted before Silas moved.

[mory Lure Detected]

[Form: Familiar Voice]

[Trigger Target: rek Foolsgold]

[Recomnded: Do not remove covering. Do not answer by na.]

Silas looked at rek.

For once, the fool seed truly afraid.

Not startled. Not cautious. Afraid.

The kneeling man turned his covered head toward them.

"rek," it said. "You left in the cage."

rek’s mouth tightened.

Elara shifted Mina higher against her shoulder and stepped back from the chamber.

Silas spoke without raising his voice. "We do not answer it."

The covered head turned toward him.

"Shadow Advisor," it said.

Tobin whispered a prayer.

Silas stayed still.

The thing laughed once under the sack. The laugh sounded like Pellan for the first breath, then like soone imitating him badly.

"You took the girl. You broke the hand. The road has marked you."

rek whispered, "It should not know that."

The System opened.

[Attention Level Increased]

[Dreaming Road Awareness: Moderate]

[Hostile Entity uses acquired mory fragnts.]

[Counterasure: Salt circle, iron nail, refusal phrase.]

Silas reached into his pack and took out a salt packet.

The kneeling thing twisted toward him.

"Do not waste salt," it said in Pellan’s voice. "You will need it when the well calls your mother’s na."

Silas stopped moving for half a second.

Not because of the words.

Because the thing had chosen badly.

It did not know his mother’s na.

It did not know his old world.

It had reached for a wound and found a wall.

Silas tore the packet open and poured salt in a half circle before them.

The thing began to shake.

rek’s voice ca low. "Full circle."

Silas finished the circle.

Elara handed him one of Marrow’s iron nails without being asked.

Silas drove it into the salt line with the heel of his boot.

The chamber went silent.

The kneeling thing stopped shaking.

Then it spoke in a different voice.

A woman’s voice.

Old.

"Who goes east without hunger?"

No one answered.

rek took one careful step closer to Silas. "That is a road question."

Silas kept his eyes on the sack. "What answer opens it?"

"I don’t know."

"Guess."

rek swallowed. "No."

The woman’s voice ca again.

"Who goes east without hunger?"

Tobin’s hand shook around his sword.

Mina whispered against Elara, "Don’t say you are full."

Silas looked at her.

The girl did not lift her head.

"They asked one boy," she whispered. "He said he was full. They took his teeth."

Elara closed her eyes for a mont.

Silas turned back to the kneeling thing.

The System offered no answer.

Only a warning.

[Response Required]

[Falsehood Risk: High]

[Literal Answer Risk: High]

[Recomnded: Interpret hunger as lack, not appetite.]

Silas breathed slowly.

Who goes east without hunger?

A man without hunger wanted nothing. A dead man wanted nothing. But roads did not ask riddles to hear cleverness. Old doors asked to asure aning.

Silas answered, "No one living."

The kneeling thing bowed its covered head.

The iron gate with the crown mark clicked open.

rek let out a quiet breath.

Tobin looked as if his legs might fail.

Elara did not move.

The sack over the kneeling thing began to darken.

Wetness spread through the cloth from inside.

"Do not look," rek said.

No one needed to be told twice.

They crossed the chamber by the opened crown gate. Silas went last, keeping the lantern turned away from the kneeling figure. As he passed, the thing whispered again, this ti in a child’s voice.

"Silas."

He stopped.

Elara turned sharply.

rek whispered, "Do not."

The voice ca again.

"Silas Vane."

That na belonged to the body.

Not the man inside it.

Silas did not answer.

The voice under the sack softened.

"Not your first na."

His blood went cold.

The System flared.

[Identity Probe Detected]

[Defensive Response Activated]

[Private Origin Shield: Holding]

[Warning: Continued exposure may compromise Host secrecy.]

Silas stepped through the gate.

The iron bars closed behind him.

Only then did he breathe.

rek watched him carefully in the dim light.

"It knew enough to try," he said.

"Yes."

"What are you hiding?"

Silas looked at him.

rek held his gaze for once without smiling.

Then he looked away first. "Fine. Bad place to ask."

They moved on.

The passage beyond the crown gate was narrower and drier. The sound of water faded behind them. After fifty paces, the air changed. It slled of cold earth and old roots.

Mina had stopped shaking, but her grip on Elara remained tight.

Tobin walked behind them, sword still drawn. His eyes moved to every shadow.

rek walked beside Silas now.

He spoke quietly. "When sothing uses a voice, do not hate the voice."

Silas glanced at him.

rek kept looking ahead. "It makes you slow. You hear the person you failed. You lose one breath. One breath is enough."

"You heard Pellan."

"Yes."

"And the person you loved?"

rek’s face closed.

"No."

That was a lie.

Silas let it pass.

The System pulsed.

[Social Insight: Subject rek Foolsgold suppressed emotional response.]

[Associated Trigger: Familiar Voice Lure]

[Recomndation: Do not press during hostile route.]

Again, useful.

Again, correct.

The road began to rise.

Ahead, a faint grey light leaked through a cracked stone seam. Not sunlight. The capital had none. This was thinner, colder, the kind of light that ca through mist before a storm.

rek stopped near the seam.

"This opens near the old tanner’s ditch," he said. "Outside the inner wall. Not outside the city."

Elara looked at Mina. "Can you walk now?"

Mina nodded, though she did not let go.

Elara set her down slowly. The girl’s legs trembled, but she stayed standing.

Tobin glanced back into the passage. "Is it following?"

rek listened.

Silas listened too.

No bells.

No tapping.

No voices.

Only the distant sound of water and the old road settling behind them.

"No," rek said. "It does not need to. It knows where we are going."

Silas touched the iron ring in his coat.

The System opened one final line.

[Current Mission Status: Active]

[New Objective: Reach Blackreed before the Dreaming Road alters the trail.]

[Warning: The na "Silas Vane" is no longer fully safe below old thresholds.]

The cracked seam ahead groaned as rek pressed his palm against the stone.

Cold air entered.

Beyond it lay the outer city, the old ditch, and the roads that would take them east.

Silas looked once at the darkness behind them.

Then he stepped through.

Above ground, the twilight waited unchanged.

But the city no longer felt like a cage.

It felt like the first locked room they had escaped from.

Behind him, under stone and water, the closed eye kept watching without opening.
