The equipnt in a doctoral research institute was far more advanced than what Jiang Xing had in his own institute.
For example, the talent detectors there offered much higher precision, could analyze more categories with finer detail, and had significantly lower margins of error.
Carrying two Clouddown Bird under his arms, Jiang Xing ran straight to Dr. Xu's research institute and shalessly borrowed his teacher's equipnt.
Yet even the talent detector at Dr. Xu's institute produced exactly the sa result.
The talents were still listed as Perception and Good Mood.
There was no trace whatsoever of the "hidden talent energy" Jiang Xing had imagined.
That left him deeply conflicted—
What exactly was this unknown variable?
If he couldn't figure it out, he probably wouldn't be able to sleep at night.
'If it really is a hidden talent, then it makes sense that current machines can't detect it.'
'After all, the doctors who designed these machines may never have considered the possibility of "hidden talents," nor observed any kind of "hidden energy." They simply never developed the technology in that direction…'
Thinking this, Jiang Xing left the institute and followed the guidance of nearby Pet Beasts until he found Dr. Xu on a mountain peak, observing and recording Pet Beast breeding behavior.
"Teacher, do you have Dr. Sophia's contact information?"
"What do you need Dr. Sophia for?"
Dr. Xu stood up from the grass. Two thick branches were still sticking out of his head, making him look as though he had disguised himself as a bush in order to spy on Pet Beast life.
As for whether that could actually fool a Pet Beast's senses…
Jiang Xing preferred to call it "atmosphere."
Under normal circumstances, he might even have exchanged a few "peeping" techniques with Dr. Xu.
But right now, his mind was completely occupied with the "unknown variable" and "hidden talents," so he quickly explained: "I want to discuss sothing with Dr. Sophia and see whether it's possible to create an even more refined talent detector—one capable of identifying hidden energy…"
"There's an unknown variable inside the Clouddown Birds that affects move power. I suspect it may be so kind of hidden talent!"
"Hidden talent?" After hearing him out, Dr. Xu rubbed his stubble and said, "Isn't that a bit too far-fetched?"
"So far, the Pet Beast Compendium has docunted over a million species of Pet Beasts, and there's never been a single recorded case of a 'dual talent.'"
"Compared to hidden talents, maybe 'hidden attributes' would be more believable."
"At least multi-attribute Pet Beasts are known to exist."
"There's no way hidden attributes could exist…"
Jiang Xing shook his head.
Attributes and talents were two completely different concepts.
The reason he suspected hidden talents was because many talents were highly specialized and narrow in application.
So special talents might never activate throughout an entire lifeti unless they encountered a very specific situation.
That made them perfectly suited to exist as a kind of "hidden variable."
Attributes, on the other hand, represented the fundantal nature of a Pet Beast's power. They were constantly active and would react to all forms of external energy at every mont—
Whether through suppression, resistance, or enhancent of move power.
There simply wasn't any room for them to remain hidden.
That was also why modern Pet Beast scholars generally believed no new attributes would ever appear.
If a new attribute existed, Beast Tars would have discovered it long ago through attribute interactions and elental suppression.
And if it had sohow avoided discovery, that could only an it had no suppressive or resistant relationship with any known attribute.
Like two parallel lines, they would barely interact at all.
Only then could such an attribute remain "hidden."
How could that be possible?
How could it… not be possible?
Wait.
A spark flashed through Jiang Xing's mind—
Since he had already accepted—or rather, hypothesized—the existence of "hidden dual talents," then why couldn't he also hypothesize the existence of "hidden attributes"?
Pet Beasts were already such mysterious creatures, filled with endless possibilities.
Why couldn't there exist an attribute that "wasn't suppressed by anything and resisted nothing"?
Previously, Jiang Xing had believed such an attribute would be aningless. If its existence made no practical difference, then it might as well be treated as nonexistent…
But now, he had a new idea.
Attributes were tied to more than just suppression relationships.
Take Water-attribute Pet Beasts, for example. Besides reducing the damage they received from Fire-attribute attacks and taking additional damage from Lightning-attribute attacks, they also gained amplification from Water-attribute power.
The Water-attribute moves they used were far stronger than the sa Water-attribute moves used by Pet Beasts of other attributes.
This was known as Attribute Amplification.
And that was precisely why Pet Beasts rarely trained moves that didn't match their own attribute.
For instance, although the Rainbow Dragon Hatchling still retained the Water-attribute moves it had learned back when it was a Golden-Patterned Koi, including the racial Water-attribute move Waterfall Climb, it rarely used them.
Thinking from that perspective—
Suppose there existed an attribute with no suppression relationships whatsoever.
But it still possessed sa-attribute moves capable of amplifying move power.
Then it would no longer be "aningless." Its existence would have genuine value!
That could also explain why only the Clouddown Bird's Return move displayed abnormally high power…
Other Pet Beasts lacked the "hidden attribute," so naturally they received no attribute amplification and their performance remained ordinary.
Furthermore, this hypothesis could be extended even further—
Pet Beast attributes and move attributes were actually two different concepts and couldn't simply be treated as the sa thing.
For example, tal generates Water. When a Water-attribute Pet Beast was attacked by a tal-attribute move, the damage it received would be reduced. However, Water did not suppress tal, so a tal-attribute Pet Beast struck by a Water-attribute attack would not take additional damage.
Therefore, even if an attribute, when treated as a Pet Beast attribute, had no suppression relationships at all—
That wouldn't prevent it, as a move attribute and offensive force, from suppressing other attributes.
That was the difference between "defense" and "attack"!
Applying this line of reasoning to the Return move—
If the move's power fluctuated depending on the target's attribute…
And when combined with the "unknown variable" inside the Clouddown Birds, along with Jiang Xing's own deductions…
Then there was an overwhelming chance they possessed so kind of "unknown attribute"!
"I get it now!!"
Jiang Xing had already been standing there in a daze for quite a while.
At this mont, thoughts poured through his mind like a flood as countless possibilities surfaced one after another, making him unable to stop himself from shouting in excitent.
His sudden shout startled two eagle-type Pet Beasts that were currently breeding inside a nearby nest.
One of the large eagles jerked violently in fright and glared over furiously.
"Shrieeek!!"
"Sorry, sorry—you two carry on. We'll leave right away…"
Dr. Xu hurriedly stood up and tried to calm them down.
The great eagle had long since noticed Dr. Xu hiding nearby. Hearing this, it unhappily flapped its wings a few tis before withdrawing its furious gaze.
"Jiang Xing…" Dr. Xu turned around and removed the branches from his head. Just as he was about to drag his student away, he realized Jiang Xing had already vanished without a trace. "That kid…"
Dr. Xu laughed helplessly.
Had Jiang Xing finally figured it out?
He had run off without even saying goodbye.
Co to think of it, what exactly had he figured out?
…Hidden attributes?

Dr. Xu unconsciously tightened his fingers and snapped the branch in half.
