’I don’t get it. I regret being so reserved. What was the point of being so coy?’
’In this era, it’s not just won whose minds are constrained; n’s thinking isn’t very progressive either.’
’I should have just finished my shower, put nothing on, and run out just like that, bold as brass. I refuse to believe Jie Jingchen could have remained completely unmoved.’
’Jie Jingchen is my golden ticket, and I’m going to hold on tight and never let go.’
’Didn’t Jie Jingchen thoughtfully hand the reins over to ? Well then, I’m going to exercise my power and follow my heart.’
Qin i picked up her pajamas, tossed them into the closet, and burrowed under the covers, leaving only her head sticking out as she waited for Jie Jingchen to return.
She waited and waited, but instead of Jie Jingchen, it was Mrs. Xie who appeared.
"Qin i." Mrs. Xie knocked on the door.
Hearing her mother-in-law’s voice, Qin i’s mind went blank. She shot upright. To burn her bridges, she’d tossed her pajamas in the closet. Just as she was about to ask her mother-in-law to wait a mont, another voice spoke up.
Jie Jingchen walked out of Jie Jingshan’s room and said to Mrs. Xie, "Mom, the door isn’t locked from the inside."
"What were you doing in Jingshan’s room?" Mrs. Xie raised an eyebrow, shooting her son a look. Without giving Jie Jingchen a chance to answer, she pushed the door open and went in.
The corner of Jie Jingchen’s mouth twitched. Seeing his mother enter the room, he pressed his lips together and said nothing.
"Fourth Brother, I’m going to bed." Jie Jingshan kicked him out.
"Mom needs to talk to your fourth sister-in-law. Let’s do one more problem." Before Jie Jingchen could finish speaking, Jie Jingshan slamd the door shut and locked it.
Qin i ducked back under the covers, clutching them tightly with both hands. With only her head showing, she watched Mrs. Xie enter.
"Mom, did you need sothing?" Qin i forced a smile.
Seeing that Qin i was already in bed and had no intention of getting up as she entered, Mrs. Xie wasn’t angry. She ca and sat on the edge of the bed. "Xiao i, were you about to sleep?"
"Mhm," Qin i agreed, and even let out a yawn for good asure.
Qin i assud this would be enough for Mrs. Xie to take the hint and leave, but her mother-in-law showed no signs of going anywhere. "Mom, was there sothing you needed?"
Mrs. Xie didn’t beat around the bush and asked directly, "Xiao i, are you skilled in cardiac surgery?"
Qin i froze for a mont. Instead of answering, she asked, "Is it a difficult case?"
Mrs. Xie hesitated for a few seconds. "It’s not difficult, nor is it very serious. It’s just that the patient’s identity is rather special."
Qin i shook her head decisively. "I’m not."
’If even my mother-in-law considers their identity special, it’s best I don’t get involved. If the problem were serious, I might step in, but from the way she’s acting, it isn’t. It’s just that the patient’s identity is special.’
Mrs. Xie was taken aback for a mont. She hadn’t expected Qin i to refuse so decisively just from hearing the patient’s identity was special. She gave a subtle yet direct reminder, "Xiao i, this is a rare opportunity. I hope you’ll consider it carefully."
Qin i understood Mrs. Xie’s aning. With effort cos reward, but so rewards are laced with poison. It’s better to keep one’s distance from certain circles. Without absolute power, a single misstep could get you burned.
’Mrs. Xie has the Qiao Family behind her, but who do I have?’
"Mom, I’ll say it again: my ambitions don’t lie there." A look of persistence and determination filled Qin i’s eyes.
"Xiao i, your dical skills are extraordinary. You should be in a hospital, putting your talents to good use, benefiting..."
"Mom, Mom, Mom," Qin i cut Mrs. Xie off. "I’m just an ordinary person. I just want to live a simple, quiet life."
"Put your learning to use. When you first studied dicine, wasn’t it to save the dying and heal the wounded?" Mrs. Xie still hadn’t given up. Qin i’s handling of a scalpel was too practiced; it was a level of skill completely unlike soone who was only eighteen or nineteen.
The only way she could be this skilled was if the Qin family was a dical dynasty, where she had been imrsed in the craft since childhood, had its essence passed down to her, and was then tempered through a thousand trials.
’For Qin i not to work in a hospital is such a waste of talent. It’s a loss for the hospital, and a loss for the patients.’
’Put my learning to use?’ Qin i smiled to herself. ’I’ve learned so many things. If I had to put all of them to use, I’d work myself to death.’
"Mom, I’ll take your words to heart. Don’t you worry, I am determined to help traditional Chinese dicine flourish!" Qin i declared, looking full of fighting spirit.
Dark lines seed to form on Mrs. Xie’s forehead. She was talking to Qin i about Western dicine, and Qin i was talking right back about Chinese dicine. Although both were fields of dicine, she felt like they were completely talking past each other.
"Xiao i, are you really not going to consider working at a hospital?" Mrs. Xie asked, unwilling to give up.
"I’m not considering it," Qin i said, her tone firm.
"Sigh! This child." Mrs. Xie sighed, looking at Qin i with exasperation.
"Mom, to each their own. Even if I don’t work at a hospital, it won’t stop from saving the dying and healing the wounded. If you run into a difficult surgery, or a field that you... don’t specialize in, you can consider . As long as the price is right, I’ll be there without hesitation," Qin i said with a chuckle.
