Around the second watch.
------------------------
In the afternoon, Uncle Gangshun, Fat Auntie, Luo Xiaoqiong, Luo Hongqi, and the family ca to the Zhou family to pay a New Year’s visit. Zhang Erniu had to work and couldn’t co, and Zhao Qiliang was with Luan Dajiang, so he couldn’t make it either.
Knowing that this family ca primarily to see Lin Baohe and Zhao Yulan, after greeting and chatting for a while, Old Madam Zhou took the initiative to arrange for them to be alone in the side hall.
"Yulan, Baohe, you are truly blessed; your parents-in-law are really sensible." Once the door was closed and only familiar people were left, Fat Auntie couldn’t help but express.
Yulan laughed, "From what you’re saying, are you implying that your parents-in-law are not sensible?"
"Look at you, you’re just finding fault, aren’t you?" Fat Auntie looked at her speechlessly, "You know I didn’t an that, but you accuse ; ah, people living in the city for a long ti, they must look down on us bumpkins."
"You say I falsely accused you, but you’re the one turning the tables on ..." Yulan angrily poked her, "Are you implying that I’ve forgotten my roots, right?"
"You two, when you’re apart, you’re always reminiscing, and when you et, you squabble. Aren’t you afraid the kids will laugh at you?" Gangshun pointed to Chuxia and the others watching the fun with a smile, "Do you still want to save so face in front of them in the future?"
"They’ve grown up watching us, so they know our temperants; why pretend?" Fat Auntie glared at her husband, "You think if you pretend, you’ll really beco the Official Master?"
"Look at her, her mouth is really unforgiving. When did I ever think of becoming the Official Master?" Gangshun looked at Lin Baohe with a face full of speechlessness, "You say she spends all day with Yulan, how co her temper hasn’t changed a bit?"
Lin Baohe laughed, "I’ve been with you all day, and my temper hasn’t changed much either."
"Baohe speaks nicely..." Fat Auntie raised her eyebrows with satisfaction, "You think just because you say I’m bad, others will really think I’m bad? Let tell you, keep your wishes to yourself; if there’s ever a day you do sothing against , everyone will definitely side with ."
"Look at that, look at that, talking and talking, she starts spouting nonsense again." Gangshun shook his head helplessly, "When the kids aren’t ho, she’s always chattering with . Yulan, please advise her; if she continues like this, she’ll soon be obsessed."
"You have the nerve to say that. To avoid chatting with , you don’t co ho after work; you wander around the fields aimlessly. Wandering and wandering, you’ve gotten yourself into trouble, haven’t you?" Fat Auntie looked at her husband with disdain, "Sooner or later, you’ll fall into a pit of nasty water and won’t know if I’m doing it for your own good."
"What’s going on?" Chuxia asked Luo Xiaoqiong in a whisper, "Last night, the two of them were fine; today, why does it sound like they’re full of gunpowder? Did sothing happen after we left?"
"They’re just bored, looking for trouble." Luo Xiaoqiong pouted, "After you left, Erniu went back shortly. Our family sat around idly chatting, and eventually, we started talking about Sixth Aunt Qin’s matter, and the two of them started bickering. Before coming to your house, they weren’t talking; do you think they’ve grown backward as they live?"
"During the New Year, what kind of favor did Sixth Aunt Qin ask Uncle Gangshun for?"
Sixth Aunt Qin is the village widow. Her husband was killed when a pit caved in while mining stones; of her four children, the oldest is only ten this year. Life is very difficult, but she’s quite good-looking, so the village won guard against her like wolves. With nowhere else to turn, she seeks out Gangshun for help, as he’s the village party secretary.
"Once the twelfth lunar month started, a big snow fell, and a room of her house caved in under the pressure. My dad took the initiative to gather people and fix it for her. Seeing her family was nearly out of food, he found a bag of cornal and half a bag of white flour from ho to send over.
Because my dad helped on his own initiative, the village gossips started spreading rumors, saying my dad had his eye on Sixth Aunt Qin. At first, my mom didn’t take it to heart but hearing it repeatedly, she bottled up a stomach full of anger.
Recently, after seeing and my brother, the couple was happy and forgot about it. Yesterday, when we were all together chatting, my brother said he saved so food coupons and wanted my parents to take them back.
My mom got angry, saying taking them back would only be feeding outsiders, and then she brought up my dad helping Sixth Aunt Qin. My dad’s point was, out of respect, considering Sixth Uncle Qin’s good relationship with him in the past, and seeing his four children with no food, how could he, as village party secretary, not help?
