“No, they’re very well-behaved.” Xue Ling looked tenderly at the two children. She spent most days with them, practising recitation or teaching them martial arts moves. The children enjoyed these activities, so they learned with enthusiasm. Since the elder child was disciplined, he kept the younger one in check as well.
“They listen to you. I believe I would’ve had a tough ti otherwise.” Qin Xue knew how tiring it could be to look after children.
“Your kids are quite well-behaved,” Xue Ling replied.
Listening to the exchange between Qin Xue and Xue Ling, siblings Qin Yu found their conversation odd. However, they didn’t voice their curiosity, as they were accustod to their sister’s unconventional behaviour.
“Sis, why have you brought us here? Isn’t this the haunted house the village talks about?” As they neared the house, Qin Jiale apprehensively asked her sister.
“Haunted house? We’re here to catch a ghost.” Qin Xue replied with a mysterious smirk. Seeing this, Xue Ling chuckled. She admired her master’s creativity.
“What do you an ‘catch a ghost’?” Qin Jiale and Qin Yu were surprised by their sister’s words but they couldn’t deny the eerie reputation of the house. Qin Yu didn’t fear such superstitions but buying the house seed a bit too much. However, he didn’t protest knowing his sister’s decision. Seeing Qin Xue’s calm deanour and Xue Ling’s cheerful expression made them question whether they were overthinking it.
“Xue Ling, what do you think?” Qin Xue turned to Xue Ling.
“Not bad, it’s a pretty good house,” Xue Ling comnted without batting an eye.
“That’s all I needed to hear. Let’s go ho,” Qin Xue was content knowing they had chosen the right place.
“Sis, have you made the decision just now?” Qin Yu was skeptical. Was it really decided on just one look?
“Exactly! I only had a quick glance at it before. I haven’t really examined its surroundings until now, and it seems perfectly fine.” Qin Xue smiled at her apprehensive brother.
Regardless of how Qin Yu and Qin Jiale perceived the house, they agreed upon one thing – if their sister thought it was good, it indeed was.
After their visit, each holding a child, they returned. The villagers were confounded by their actions and couldn’t guess Qin Xue’s intentions. She didn’t bother explaining that she intended to buy the house to them, though.
She decided to let her father handle the purchase as her cousin Qing Zhu would need a place to stay soon. There would be a necessity to negotiate the contract as soon as possible so that no disagreents could arise in the future if their standard of living improved.
“Dad, can you please halt your work for a mont and help purchase the house? Don’t forget to make them sign a contract so no unexpected problems arise later.” Qin Xue handed over US$ 110 to her father to carry out the purchase without concerning herself with the details.
