Her daughter was really stepping up to the plate, knowing that she didn’t want this man in their house – so she was taking revenge for her, right?
“Really, I’m not joking.” Ye Xuan thought Qing Zhu hadn’t heard him, so he replied seriously.
“Hold her for a second, I’ll get her a change of pants.” Seeing his face, sowhere between laughter and tears, Qing Zhu stifled her own laughter as she spoke. However, the trembling of her shoulders gave away that she was chuckling under her breath.
Ye Xuan noticed too, but what could he say? He looked down at the little one in his arms who was staring up at him with wide, twinkling eyes, her gums showing in a charming grin.
Seeing such an angelic figure, Ye Xuan’s stern heart suddenly softened, infected by her innocent and pure smile. He found himself smiling along.
“You look good when you smile, you should smile more.” Having found the trousers, Qing Zhu walked over to take the child from him, placed her on the bed, then whispered.
Ye Xuan, who was originally smiling, found his face freezing in surprise, which made Qing Zhu think him a little silly.
“Don’t be surprised. You were already good-looking, but why did you bother dressing up like an old uncle? If you dressed normally, you might even look better than Qin Xue’s man.” Qing Zhu didn’t know why she was comparing this man with Qin Xue’s – both were of the aloof type, except Qin Xue’s was genuinely cool, while this one seed to have a hint of warmth beneath his icy deanor.
As she spoke, the original smile on Ye Xuan’s face gradually faded. Did he just smile? Was it because of the child that he had laughed?
Ye Xuan didn’t rember when he had last smiled. He had been living like this for years and no one ever said anything about it, so he thought it was typical. Yet, here was this woman saying that he had laughed. So, this was what laughter felt like?
Ye Xuan touched his face. He always thought he had a stern face. Whenever he saw others laugh, he also wanted to break into a smile, but they always told him to just be himself, and never to laugh, else it might scare people.
So, it wasn’t that he couldn’t smile, but rather that he didn’t know how to. The little one had softened his heart earlier, and so he had let his inner feelings spill out into a smile.
“What’s the matter?” Qing Zhu asked, noticing his strange movent.
“No, nothing. Can I hold her again?” Ye Xuan looked at the toddler who was now dressed, wanting to re-experience the feeling from earlier.
“Sure, you hold her. I’m going out to get so food.” Perhaps sensing sothing, Qing Zhu didn’t hesitate to hand the baby back into his arms.
Ye Xuan was surprised at how easily Qing Zhu had agreed, looking after the woman who had just walked out – why did she trust him so much? Was she not afraid he could turn out to be a bad person?
As for why Qing Zhu trusted him, she wasn’t sure either. She just felt that he wasn’t a bad person, that he would not harm her or her child.
If she were to think about it too deeply, she may not have trusted him so readily.
But that’s how it often is. Unconsciously, people just trust that the other person will not harm them.
“Yuran, Yuran.” Ye Xuan’s hands were still stiff, but with the experience from earlier, he now knew how to properly support the child without letting her slip. So, he held her appropriately, mimicking the way Qing Zhu had held her earlier and increntally adjusted. At least, he was now not afraid to move and was holding the kid properly.
