Chapter 10 — Ascending the Gallows

The vertical maintenance shaft was a claustrophobic throat of rusted corrugated iron, choked with freezing condensation and the toxic exhaust of the city’s lower levels. Kael climbed with a predatory, calculated rhythm. Every ti his boots or gauntlets made contact with the icy tal rungs, the V.I.P.E.R. suit’s localized kinetic dampeners absorbed the vibrations, reducing the impact to an acoustic absolute zero.

To the world outside, he didn't exist. He was a phantom rising through the plumbing of a dead civilization.

[Active Camouflage: Status Nominal.]

[Ti remaining until network probe decryption: 11 minutes, 04 seconds.]

[Warning: Host pulse rate is 132 BPM. Adrenaline saturation approaching threshold.]

Let it spike, Kael thought, his jaw clenching so hard his teeth ached. We’re going into the teeth of the beast.

He reached the summit of the shaft, where a heavy, circular hatch separated him from the freezing winds of the surface tarmac. Through the small, reinforced view-glass of the hatch, the world was a blurred nightmare of strobing floodlights and whipping crimson dust. The massive underbelly of the Dominion command frigate lood directly overhead, anchored like a matte-black leviathan just forty ters above the landing pad.

Its secondary communications dish—a massive, rotating lattice of brass-alloy and pulsing violet energy receptors—was pitched toward the eastern horizon, greedily drinking in the fake data loop Kael had fed into the grid.

But the platform wasn't empty.

Two elite Purge Sentinels stood guard directly over the maintenance hatch. They weren't the standard exo-suit grunts he had torn through earlier. These n wore the sleek, heavy-plated Iron Vanguard variants—armor explicitly designed to withstand high-magnitude kinetic impacts and micro-nanite swarms. Their heavy, twin-barreled plasma auto-cannons were unslung, low hums of superheated gas vibrating through the air.

[Tactical Evaluation: Iron Vanguard armor detected.]

[Composition: Ablative titanium-carbide weave. High resistance to piercing attacks.]

[Weakness: Joint articulation seals and thermal regulation exhaust ports.]

"Eleven minutes," Kael muttered under his breath. "No room for mistakes."

He didn't open the hatch manually. He willed the liquid tal of his left gauntlet to flow into the locking chanism beneath the door. The nanites bypassed the chanical tumblers, overriding the pneumatic pressure valves.

With a sharp, sudden hiss, the hatch flew open upward.

Before the nearest Sentinel could even turn his heavy helt toward the sound, Kael exploded out of the shaft like a coiled spring. He deactivated his camouflage mid-flight, channeling the stored energy directly into a devastating, two-handed overhead strike.

The crimson energy blade materialized in a flash of blinding light, hissing violently against the freezing rain and dust.

The blade struck the first Sentinel squarely at the collarbone. The ablative armor scread, throwing off blinding blue sparks as its kinetic absorption fields tried to disperse the damage. But the V.I.P.E.R. blade wasn't just hot; it was vibrating at a microscopic, molecular frequency. The crimson edge sheared through the titanium-carbide weave, cutting deep into the power core housed in the shoulder.

A sharp, electrical pop echoed through the storm as the soldier’s suit short-circuited, freezing his limbs instantly. Kael violently kicked the paralyzed guard off his blade, spinning on his heel as the second Sentinel brought his plasma auto-cannon to bear.

“Intruder on the primary tarmac!” the second guard roared over the local comms, unleashing a torrent of rapid-fire plasma bolts at point-blank range.

The air turned to pure fire.

Kael threw himself into a low, horizontal slide across the ash-slick concrete. The plasma bolts scorched the air inches above his visor, the intense radiant heat instantly setting off his suit’s warnings.

[Warning: Thermal threshold exceeded. Activating Ergency Dissipation.]

Instead of shielding himself, Kael used the Enhanced Energy Conversion routine. He reached out with his bare left hand, letting the stray plasma splashes hit his gauntlet. The suit aggressively drank the heat, converting the lethal energy into pure, kinetic velocity.

He didn't just slide—he propelled himself forward like a rocket.

He collided with the second Sentinel’s legs, throwing the massive, armored soldier off balance. As the guard stumbled backward, Kael leaped up, driving his elbow straight into the suit's exposed neck seam. The kinetic pile-driver clicked inside his gauntlet, delivering a high-pressure shockwave that shattered the soldier’s internal heads-up display and knocked him unconscious inside his helt.

Both guards were down in less than twenty seconds. But the alarm had already been raised.

High above, the command frigate’s underbelly defense turrets began to groan, their dual-laser tracking eyes snapping downward to lock onto Kael’s crimson silhouette.

"V.I.P.E.R., give everything on the thruster boots!" Kael shouted, sprinting toward the gantry crane that connected the landing pad to the frigate's lower boarding ramp.

[Warning: Diverting core reserves to localized propulsion will reduce armor integrity by 30%.]

[Proceed?]

"Do it!"

The matte-black plating on his calves split open, revealing glowing, crimson-lit exhaust chambers. With a deafening roar of compressed kinetic force, Kael launched himself into the air, leaping a massive twenty ters straight up toward the hanging maintenance cat-walk of the starship.

Red laser lines tracked his trajectory in real-ti. A heavy flak turret opened fire, sending explosive shells tearing through the air around him. Shrapnel sliced across Kael’s chest plate, leaving deep, smoking gouges in the armor, but the kinetic thrust carried him through the cloud of fire.

He slamd onto the tal grating of the frigate’s exterior catwalk, his boots gripping the tal with a loud, ringing crash.

[Impact absorbed. Core reserves at 41%.]

[Ti remaining: 7 minutes, 42 seconds.]

Kael didn't stop to catch his breath. He was directly beneath the primary communications dish now. The massive chanism was rotating slowly on a colossal, gear-driven column. If he could destroy the main processing nexus at the base of the dish, Vance’s ability to track his neural signatures would be permanently blinded.

He sprinted down the narrow catwalk, his eyes fixed on the heavy, armored access panel protecting the comms nexus.

Suddenly, the blast doors at the end of the catwalk slid open.

Three elite Purge enforcers stepped out, carrying heavy ballistic riot shields and neural-disruption batons. Behind them stood a figure that made Kael’s blood turn to pure ice.

It wasn't Director Vance physically, but a holographic projection floating in the middle of the squad. The digital image of Vance looked down at Kael with a cold, clinical serenity that defied the howling storm around them.

"Astonishing," the holographic Vance murmured, his voice broadcasted through the enforcers' external speakers. "To scale the gallows of a starship alone. Your synchronization paraters with the V.I.P.E.R. asset have reached 96%. You are evolving faster than our simulated models predicted, Subject 47-A."

Kael stopped ten paces away, his crimson energy blade dripping superheated sparks onto the tal grating. "My na is Kael. And I'm here to rip your eyes out."

"You are whatever the database dictates you are," Vance replied smoothly, waving a dismissive hand. "You think you are saving those miners. You think this little sabotage matters. But every move you make simply refines the teletry data we need to execute a hard-override on your suit. Subdue him, gentlen. Break his limbs if you must, but keep the spine intact."

The three enforcers locked their shields together, forming an unbreakable wall of gold-plated alloy, and advanced down the narrow catwalk. The neural batons crackled with an unstable, white-blue electricity that promised absolute paralysis upon contact.

[System Alert: High-frequency neural disruption field detected ahead.]

[Direct contact will result in imdiate suit deactivation.]

Kael looked at the shield wall. He looked at the armored access panel behind them. Then, he looked up at the colossal, rotating brass gears of the communications dish grinding directly above their heads.

A dark, lethal smile spread across Kael's face behind his visor.

"Vance," Kael whispered, his voice vibrating with a terrifying, layered resonance. "You spent so much ti studying the suit... you forgot to study the world I survived in."

Instead of attacking the enforcers, Kael lunged straight upward. He drove his kinetic spike directly into the primary drive-gear of the massive, rotating communications dish.

The liquid tal spike expanded inside the massive teeth of the gear, jamming the multi-ton chanism instantly.

The results were catastrophic. The starship’s powerful hydraulic engines kept pushing, trying to force the jamd gear to turn. With a horrific, deafening screech of tearing tal, the entire upper structure of the communications dish began to buckle and twist under its own imnse torque.

"What is he doing?!" one of the enforcers panicked, looking up as the sky began to fall.

"Hold the line!" the commander scread.

With a final, explosive snap, the colossal brass-alloy dish sheared completely off its mounting column. The multi-ton structure crashed downward, flattening the catwalk and smashing through the blast doors in a cataclysm of twisting steel and exploding electrical arcs.

The holographic image of Director Vance violently glitched and vanished into static as the communications array was utterly vaporized.

Kael threw himself backward into the open air just as the catwalk collapsed. As he free-fell back down toward the crimson dust storm below, he willed his Adaptive Camouflage to ripple back to life. He vanished into the dark, a ghost falling from the sky, leaving the Dominion flagship burning and blinded in his wake.

[Teletry Link: Severed.]

[Dominion tracking network: Offline.]

[Autonomy: 100% (Absolute Control).]

The first phase of the war was over. Kael Draven was no longer an asset. He was a commander.
