Chapter 12 — The at Grinder
The heavy steel doors of the pre-Dominion vault sealed shut with a definitive, ringing boom that vibrated through the very soles of Kael’s boots. Inside, the ambient lighting humd a low, defensive amber, casting deep shadows across the desperate faces of the thirty-plus miners Mira had successfully evacuated.

Kael leaned heavily against a jagged stone pillar, his helt retracting into his collar plating. His face was slick with sweat, the skin around his temples pulsing with a dull, throbbing headache from the neural strain of the Tier 2 integration.
"They're deploying heavy armor on the surface," Kael said, his voice raw. He looked toward Mira, who was already inspecting their defensive periter near the primary entrance tunnel. "Vance isn't trying to slip a strike team down here anymore. He's going to use standard infantry to wall us in, then try to crack the crust above us."
"Let him try to crack this rock," Mira replied, tapping the side of a massive, ancient stone archway. "This bunker was built before the Dominion even mapped this sector. The structural density of these lower walls can take an orbital bombardnt. But the tunnels leading to us? That's our problem. There are three separate entry points from the old mining veins."
Kael closed his eyes, mapping the network in his mind via the suit’s internal layout mory. "The northern vein is too narrow for their heavy exo-suits. They’ll send light scouts there. The main transport tunnel, though—that’s where they’ll try to drive their chanized units."
[System Alert: Remote audio sensors picking up chanized structural grinding.]
[Distance: 450 ters and closing. Acoustic profile matches Dominion 'Goliath' class bipedal walkers.]
Kael’s eyes snapped open. "They’re already in the main transport line. They’re moving fast."
"We aren't ready for a Goliath," Mira said, her hand tightening on her pulse rifle. "Not in a straight fight. Our heavy explosive charges are still stored in the secondary depot three levels down."
"Then we don't give them a straight fight," Kael muttered. He willed the V.I.P.E.R. armor back over his face, the crimson visor snapping into place with a sharp electronic hiss. "Seal the vault doors behind . I’m going to bottleneck them in the central junction."
"Kael, your suit is running on fus," Mira protested, stepping into his path.
"Then I'll just have to take what I need from them," he replied smoothly.
With a thought, Kael activated his Adaptive Camouflage. His silhouette rippled, dissolving instantly into a ghostly distortion against the dark, damp rock walls. He slipped through the side maintenance hatch before Mira could argue further, heading straight into the pitch-black maze of the transport tunnels.
The deeper he ran, the louder the vibrations beca. The rhythmic, earth-shaking thud of a Goliath walker's hydraulic legs echoed through the narrow corridors, accompanied by the clanking gear of an accompanying twelve-man infantry squad. They were moving in a tight tactical diamond formation, using heavy floodlights mounted to the walker's chassis to cut through the thick underground dust.
Kael positioned himself upside down, his boots locking onto the rusted iron support beams running along the tunnel ceiling. He held his breath, completely invisible to both human eyes and the walker's infrared sweep sensors.
"Keep a tight periter," the Dominion squad leader commanded over the radio, his voice clear through Kael's intercepted frequency. "The asset is confird to have optical cloaking. Watch for air distortions. If anything moves, flood the sector with suppressive plasma fire."
The Goliath walker stepped directly beneath Kael's position, its exposed upper cooling vents venting hot, pressurized steam right into the ceiling space.
[Ambient thermal energy detected. Initiating manual conversion matrix.]
Kael didn't drop down imdiately. Instead, he reached down from the beam, his cloaked fingers hovering right over the walker's open exhaust port. The Enhanced Energy Conversion sub-routine went to work silently, greedily siphoning the imnse thermal heat bleeding off the walker's main reactor.
[Core Reserves: 31% ... 45% ... 62% (Rapid replenishnt active).]
"Reactor temperature dropping suddenly," the Goliath pilot stated, a note of confusion creeping into his voice. "Check the coolant lines. We might have a leak from the rubble—"
Before the pilot could finish the sentence, Kael deactivated his camouflage and dropped straight down onto the top of the bipedal cockpit.
The crimson energy blade erupted from his right gauntlet in a blinding, vertical flash. Kael drove the vibrating blade straight through the armored viewport of the cockpit, piercing the control console and the pilot's chest unit in a single, fluid motion. The walker violently convulsed, its hydraulic legs locking up as the internal computer terminal fried under the sudden influx of liquid nanites.
"Hostile on the walker!" the squad leader scread, but it was already too late.
Kael used the dying Goliath as a launchpad. He sprang forward into the center of the infantry diamond, his left gauntlet extending into the high-density kinetic pile-driver. He struck the ground at the squad leader's feet, unleashing a high-pressure shockwave that shattered the stone floor and sent four surrounding enforcers flying backward into the tunnel walls.
Blue plasma fire erupted from the remaining soldiers, but Kael was already moving in a jagged, hyper-accelerated pattern, his replenished energy reserves allowing his leg thrusters to dodge the incoming volleys with ease. He spun through the crossfire, a crimson demon cutting through the dark, turning the narrow transport vein into an absolute at grinder.
Within two minutes, the tunnel went dead silent again. The only sound left was the crackle of electricity sparking from the ruined Goliath walker and the heavy, chanical breathing of the Red Viper standing amidst the wreckage.
Kael stood in the center of the devastation, his visor reflecting the burning flas of the ruined machine. He checked his HUD, a cold smile forming behind his mask.
[Core Reserves: 88% (Stable).]
[Synchronization Capacity: 97%.]
[Current Area: Secured.]
They had held the line for now, but Kael knew this was just the first wave. Vance was testing his defenses, and the real slaughter was yet to co.
