The Rise of the Red Viper

Chapter 14 — Cold Blood

The quiet of the southern mining vein was absolute, save for the rhythmic dripping of mineral-heavy water striking the stone floor. Kael stood over the shattered chassis of the central relay drone, watching the last sparks of violet data bleed out into the dark.

[System Status: Network probe fully purged.]

[Core Reserves: 83%. Optimization stable.]

[Warning: Host neurological temperature remains elevated. Synaptic strain at 14%.]

"I'm fine," Kael muttered, though the lie tasted like iron in his mouth.

Every ti he pushed the suit to hijack a network or crush an exo-suit, the phantom circuitry of the V.I.P.E.R. matrix etched itself deeper into his brain. He could feel the layout of the entire facility now, not just as a map on his HUD, but as an extension of his own nervous system. He could feel the structural groans of the rock above them. He could feel the heat blooming from the Dominion encampnts on the surface.

He was becoming less of a survivor and more of a terminal interface.

"Kael, the southern scanners just picked up a secondary anomaly," Mira’s voice cut through the comms, taut with a new layer of dread. "The seeker-drones weren't just mapping. They dropped seismic micro-beacons before you disabled them. Vance knows the structural weakness of the ceiling above the central vault."

Kael’s visor flared an intense, angry crimson. "He's going to collapse the roof directly onto the civilian quarters."

"He’s positioning a heavy artillery platform right on the ridge above us," Mira said, the sound of scrambling boots audible behind her signal. "If that railcannon fires a kinetic slug, the impact will shatter the fault line. The lower vault won't hold."

"How long until they lock down the target?"

"Four minutes. Maybe less. Kael, we can't get the wounded out of the fallback tunnels fast enough. You have to intercept the firing sequence."

[New Tactical Objective: Neutralize Ridge Artillery Platform.]

[Estimated ti to target via vertical shaft: 2 minutes, 15 seconds.]

[Risk Assessnt: Extre. Surface presence has doubled.]

"Seal the inner bulkheads," Kael commanded, his voice dropping into that deep, terrifying dual-tone resonance. "Nobody leaves the vault. No matter what you hear up top."

He didn't wait for her reply. He pivoted, his boots igniting with low-frequency kinetic thrust as he surged back toward the primary maintenance conduit. The environnt blurred around him, a sar of rusted steel and wet rock as he accelerated past his previous safety paraters.

He didn't use the ladder this ti. Reaching the vertical shaft, Kael directed his leg thrusters into a singular, explosive vertical burst.

He shot up the column like a bullet, the air pressure screaming against his sealed chassis. The matte-black armor plates on his shoulders expanded, micro-scales tilting to aerodynamic angles to slice through the rising thermal exhaust.

Twenty seconds later, he punched through the surface hatch, shattering the locking bolts completely as he launched into the teeth of the ri-crusted surface storm.

The world above was a blinding vortex of red ash and howling gale-force winds. One hundred ters away, perched on the jagged lip of the basalt ridge, stood the Dominion’s answer to his defiance: a heavy, tracked Manticore artillery chassis. Its railcannon barrel—a twenty-ter length of magnetic coils and pulsing capacitors—was already elevating, pitching its lethal silhouette toward the sky.

Surrounding the platform was a full platoon of heavy enforcers, their plasma shields locked to protect the crew initializing the magnetic charging sequence.

[Railcannon Charge Status: 72%.]

[Ti to discharge: 48 seconds.]

Kael dropped into a sprint, dropping his body low to the ice-slick concrete. "V.I.P.E.R., give the camouflage. Full shroud."

[Command denied. Energy reserves insufficient to maintain high-velocity movent and optical cloaking simultaneously.]

"Then we do it the hard way," Kael roared through the storm.

The enforcers spotted the crimson streak cutting through the haze instantly. "Target sighted! Intercept! Do not let him reach the battery!"

A wall of suppressive plasma fire cut through the red dust, turning the frozen mud into boiling pools of slag. Kael didn't dodge. He channeled the Enhanced Energy Conversion sub-routine, raising his left gauntlet to catch the periter arcs of the incoming fire. The suit absorbed the kinetic and thermal impact, feeding the volatile energy straight into his propulsion arrays.

He accelerated, breaking the sound barrier in a localized micro-crack that scattered the nearest line of shield-bearers.

He breached the periter, his crimson energy blade igniting with a deafening hiss. He spun through the defensive line, a whirlwind of molecular-edge steel and hydraulic force. A single horizontal sweep sheared through the structural mounts of three plasma shields, the feedback explosions throwing the enforcers over the cliffside.

[Railcannon Charge Status: 91%.]

[Ti to discharge: 12 seconds.]

"Fire the weapon!" the battery commander scread from the control cab. "Fire it now!"

Kael leaped. He cleared the final line of heavy guards, his thrusters burning out their remaining fuel cells in a desperate arc. He landed squarely on the vibrating, superheated barrel of the railcannon just as the magnetic coils turned a blinding, electric blue.

The air around the muzzle was twisting, warping under the raw gravitational force of the kinetic slug preparing to launch.

Kael didn't try to cut the barrel. The alloy was too thick, the energy fields too dense. Instead, he drove his right hand—reinforced by the kinetic pile-driver—straight into the primary magnetic stabilization ring at the base of the muzzle.

"Eradicate," Kael snarled.

[Executing Structural Overload.]

The pile-driver fired at point-blank range, sending a massive shockwave of condensed physical force into the precise alignnt matrix of the magnets. The internal coils shifted by less than a milliter, but at ninety-nine percent charge, a milliter was death.

The magnetic field collapsed inward.

The kinetic slug, denied its frictionless path, detonated inside the barrel. A catastrophic backfire tore through the length of the Manticore platform, a blinding flash of white-hot plasma and twisted tal erupting from the chassis.

The explosion tore the ridge apart, lifting the multi-ton vehicle completely off its tracks and throwing it into a violent, rolling collapse down the mountain.

Kael was launched backward by the concussive force, his armor blackened and smoking as he tumbled across the rocky plateau, finally coming to a stop at the edge of the dark, ruined hab-blocks.

He lay still for a long mont, the red storm washing over his dented plating. Inside his helt, the text prompts were flashing a frantic, crimson warning.

[Critical Damage Detected. Left propulsion array: Offline.]

[Core Reserves: 9%. Entering low-power survival protocol.]

[Synchronization Capacity: 98.1%.]

Through the cracked glass of his visor, Kael looked up at the sky. The frigate was still there, but the ridge was silent. The vault was safe.

He dragged himself to his knees, his breath rattling against the filters. He had broken their teeth again, but Vance was watching every scar the suit took. And Kael was running out of armor to give.
