The Rise of the Red Viper

Chapter 16 — Last Blood

The wind on the ridge howled with a predatory fury, tearing away the black smoke of the shattered fuel transport. Kael stood suffocated by his own pulse, his vision swimming in a sea of jagged crimson teletry. The two remaining Nullifiers held their ground, but their heavy, three-pronged rifles remained locked at shoulder height, their automated targeting systems cycling frantically through a series of errors as they tried to re-classify the entity standing before them.

[Core Reserves: 2%.]

[Warning: Synaptic lattice experiencing acute terminal degradation.]

[Protocol 'Last Blood' active: Diverting cellular life-force to stabilize core functionality.]

Do it, Kael thought, his voice echoing in his own skull with a cold, detached clarity that wasn't entirely his own. Take whatever is left.

A deep, unnatural heat blood from the small of his back, radiating outward through his nervous system. It wasn't the clean, kinetic warmth of an absorbed plasma bolt; it was a burning, chemical fire that felt like his own blood cells being split apart to feed the suit's micro-reactor.

The shattered web of his HUD stabilized, the text turning from an amber warning to a solid, bloody violet.

[Core Reserves: 18% (Artificially sustained).]

[Biotric Status: Critical. Internal hemorrhaging detected in upper thoracic cavity.]

The Nullifier on the right broke the stalemate, his tactical training overriding his hesitation. He unleashed a rapid three-round burst of high-frequency disruption slugs. The projectles didn't explode; they tore through the air with a localized, rippling distortion field designed to collapse the atomic bonds of energy fields.

Kael didn't attempt to dodge. With his synchronization at ninety-nine percent, his perception of ti had slowed to a crawl. He could see the micro-cavitation trails of the slugs cutting through the red dust.

He raised his right arm, the liquid tal of his gauntlet shifting instantly. Instead of forming his signature energy blade, the armor rippled forward into a heavy, overlapping triangular wedge—a localized kinetic plow.

The disruption slugs struck the wedge with a deafening, tallic ping. The distortion fields flared, tearing chunks of matte-black and crimson plating away from his forearm, but the underlying structure held. Kael absorbed the kinetic rebound, channeling the concussive force straight into his calves.

He vanished.

"Target lost!" the left Nullifier barked, his helt-mounted tracking array spinning wildly. "Thermal signature—"

A shadow materialized directly behind him.

Kael drove his left hand into the center of the Nullifier’s back. The kinetic pile-driver fired with a wet, heavy thud. The condensed shockwave bypassed the exterior Vanguard armor completely, transferring its destructive energy into the internal dampeners and the soldier's spine. The man collapsed forward without a sound, his rifle clattering against the icy gravel.

The final Nullifier spun on his heel, dropping his weapon and reaching for the ergency thermal grenade mounted to his utility belt. He was too slow.

Kael caught the soldier by the throat, lifting the multi-ton armored man off the ground with a single, reinforced arm. The liquid tal scales on Kael’s fingers crept outward, invading the seams of the Nullifier’s neck guard like a swarm of hungry insects.

"Director Vance," Kael whispered, his voice completely overlapping with the machine’s deep, chanical grating. "Are you watching?"

Through the speaker of the paralyzed soldier’s helt, a faint, digitized laugh crackled through the static. It was low, calculated, and entirely calm.

"Always, Subject 47-A," Vance's voice replied from the internal comm-link. "I am watching you burn your own tissue to protect a handful of expendable laborers. I am watching you transform into the very weapon I designed. Every kill you make validates the project."

Kael’s grip tightened, the titanium-carbide collar of the Nullifier’s suit buckling under the pressure. "I'm coming for the flagship next."

"I certainly hope so," Vance murmured smoothly. "The containnt fields are already calibrated for your new frequency. Bring the asset ho, Kael."

With a brutal twist, Kael severed the comms link along with the soldier’s primary power core. He dropped the lifeless armor onto the concrete, his breath rattling violently inside his sealed mask.

[Tactical Status: All surface threats neutralized.]

[Core Reserves: 4%.]

[Warning: Protocol 'Last Blood' terminating. Imdiate host collapse imminent.]

The crimson circuit patterns in Kael's eyes began to flicker, the violet text on his HUD fracturing into unreadable static. The artificial strength drained from his limbs as fast as it had arrived, leaving him standing in the middle of the frozen plateau, completely empty.

He stumbled backward, his armor scraping against the ruined chassis of a hab-block. He fell to one knee, his left arm completely locked in place, his right hand shaking as he tried to keep himself upright.

The storm was clearing, the crimson dust settling to reveal the cold, stark expanse of Verrion-9’s surface. He had secured the ridge. The vault remained hidden. But as Kael sat alone in the dark, the black scales of the suit slowly receding from his skin, he could still hear Vance's calm, regular voice echoing in the back of his mind.

He hadn't escaped the database. He was just running down its corridors.
