Chapter 24 — The Stand at the Gate
The side panels of the three white-and-gold breaching pods exploded outward, shedding pressurized steam into the already suffocating cavern air. Through the white mist, a dozen elite Dominion Shock Troopers erged, their heavy, power-assisted armor clad in pristine composite plates that threw back the harsh orange glare of the magma river.
Unlike the common sector enforcers, these n carried high-impact kinetic rifles and heavy-duty suppression nets woven with disruptor wiring.
"Secure the platform! Do not let the asset escape!" the vanguard captain bellowed over his squad’s tactical frequency.
Behind Kael, the ancient geothermal transport platform groaned as over two hundred refugees scrambled onto its rusted iron deck. Mira stood at the manual release lever, her eyes darting between the advancing troopers and the black-clad figure guarding the threshold.
"Kael, get on the lift!" she yelled, her hand gripping the iron lever. "The counter-weights are clear! We can drop the platform now!"
"If I step onto that lift, their kinetic rifles will chew through the support cables before we descend ten ters," Kael replied, his voice a low, chanical rumble that bypassed the comms and echoed directly off the stone. "Drop the platform, Mira. I'll cut the line behind you."

Kael didn't wait for them to form a defensive line. He detonated forward, his thrusters leaving a trail of white-hot plasma heat in the ash as he closed the distance to the first line of troopers.
The Shock Troopers opened fire instantly. Heavy kinetic rounds slamd into Kael's chest and shoulders, but the 100% synchronized V.I.P.E.R. matrix didn't stumble. The matte-black scales rippled with every impact, absorbing the kinetic energy and channeling the raw force directly into his falling reserves.

He reached the lead trooper in a fraction of a second. Sweeping his right arm upward, a solid blade of violet plasma erupted from his gauntlet. The blade sliced clean through the trooper’s heavy kinetic rifle, continuing through the reinforced chest plating of the armor like heated wire through ice.
Before the fallen soldier even hit the basalt floor, Kael spun on his heel, using the montum to deliver a devastating elbow strike to the second trooper's helt. The composite visor shattered under the reinforced pressure, and the man collapsed instantly into the volcanic dust.
"Spread out! Deploy the nets!" the captain scread, backing toward the cover of his breaching pod.
Two troopers flanked Kael to the left, launching a heavy, weighted disruptor net across the air between them. The net expanded into a wide web of blue electrical current, designed to short-circuit rogue bio-tech and paralyze the user's nervous system.
The net caught Kael squarely across his shoulders, the blue currents snapping violently against the matte-black alloy.

[Redirecting electrical current to primary capacitor.]
Kael’s visor flared into a blinding white light. Instead of dropping to his knees, he grabbed the edges of the disruptor net with both hands. With a brutal, surging hiss of power, he siphoned the electrical payload directly out of the sh, turning the weapon into a harmless tangle of unpowered wire.
Behind him, the heavy iron gears of the transport platform gave a loud, tallic CLANK as Mira finally threw the release lever. The massive lift began its rapid, vertical descent into the deep geothermal vents, disappearing beneath the safety of the stone lip.
Kael watched the edge of the platform drop out of his tactical display. They were safe. The line was broken.
He turned back toward the remaining ten Shock Troopers, the violet energy arcs from the stolen disruptor net crackling across his knuckles. The full weight of the V.I.P.E.R. core was humming in his blood, cold, absolute, and completely unbound by human hesitation.
"Your shift is over," Kael whispered into the dark of the cavern.
