Chapter 39 — The Spoils of Sector Zero.

The cleanup of the iron shore was executed with the cold, thodical efficiency that had beco the hallmark of Kael's 100% synchronization. Under his direct supervision, the surviving miners from the residential blocks were brought down to the beach to salvage what the Dominion vanguard had left behind.

For a population that had spent generations surviving on corporate table scraps and discarded mining scrap, the wreckage of the four Specter assault barges was a treasure trove.

"Look at these power cells," the old shift lead muttered, his calloused hands carefully sliding a pristine, glowing blue plasma core out of a ruined barge engine. "These are military-grade. One of these can run the residential block’s heating grid for a year without a single drop in voltage."

"Don't waste them on the heaters," Mira said, stepping up beside him with a heavy crate of salvaged kinetic ammunition balanced on her shoulder. "Kael is already re-wiring the facility's outer defense grid. Every scrap of functional circuitry we pull out of these hulls is going straight into the automated boundary turrets."

She looked down the beach toward Kael. He hadn't moved from the point where he had intercepted the vanguard. He stood like a petrified obsidian statue on the edge of the water, a thick bundle of silver data-filants extending from his left gauntlet deep into the terminal core of the burning command barge.

Inside the suit's processing matrix, Kael's logical sub-routines sorted through the corporate data at lightning speed. The information he was pulling wasn't just logistical; it was a blueprint of Vance's true intentions. The Dominion wasn't just trying to recover a rogue piece of bio-tech in the V.I.P.E.R. suit—they were clearing the lower sectors because their deep-range scans had detected a massive, unrefined core of concentrated Verrion-Ore directly beneath the facility they had just fortified.

"They aren't going to send another small vanguard," Kael’s processed logic deduced. "Vance is mobilizing the primary industrial division. They will attempt to excavate the entire sector from above."

Kael retracted the silver filants from the console, the scales along his arm snapping back into their tight, predatory pattern with a smooth hiss. He turned toward the beach, his crimson visor scanning the exhausted, soot-stained faces of the refugees who were looking to him for their next command.

Mira walked up to him, setting her empty rifle casing against her belt. "What did you find in their network, Kael? Tell we have more than a few days before they realize these squads aren't checking in."

"We have exactly seventy-two hours," Kael’s dual-tone voice rumbled, the sound carrying across the quiet beach. "Before Director Vance moves the primary planetary drilling platform directly over Sector Zero. They aren't coming to hunt us anymore, Mira. They are coming to dig us out."
