Chapter 10: The Blood-Soaked Waltz

The first chamber was a testant to brutal efficiency. Kaelith was a phantom of silver death. Her daggers were finding the joints of Grave-Weavers before they could fully descend from the ceiling.

SHING! SHLUCK!

Rolf was a juggernaut of yellow fury. His Beast-Core aura flared brightly as he tore through a pack of Rot-Hounds. Their brittle bones snapped under his raw, ancestral power.

CRACK! SNAP!

Nyssa acted as our artillery. Erald fireballs arced beautifully over Rolf’s head to immolate clusters of Mana-Starved Slis.

FWOOSH! SIZZLE!

And I was the conductor of this bloody symphony.

"Rolf, three o’clock! Break their charge!" I commanded, my voice cutting effortlessly through the snarls and hisses.

"Nyssa, wide-angle concussion spell on the left flank! Disorient the Weavers! Kaelith, the alpha is yours!"

They obeyed without question. My strategy was flawless.

My tactical callouts were saving them precious seconds and energy.

But my mind was only half focused on the monsters.

The other half was running simultaneous calculations, analyzing openings, and waiting for the perfect mont to strike at my real targets.

I needed to complete those perverted quests on my own allies.

We pushed deeper into a larger cavern.

This one was a treacherous maze of massive, moss-covered stone pillars stretching high into the oppressive darkness.

The air was significantly colder here, and the silence felt heavy. It was broken only by the distant, acidic drip of corrupted sli.

Drip. Plop.

"Classic terrain designed perfectly for an ambush," I murmured, my [Sharp Eye] passively scanning the jagged pillars and the pitch-black ceiling. "They will try to separate us."

As if on cue, a half-dozen Grave-Weavers dropped from the ceiling.

Their paralytic webs arced toward us, forcing the squad to scatter.

Simultaneously, a surging tide of Mana-Starved Slis oozed from behind the stone pillars, completely cutting off our retreat.

"Back to back!" I yelled. "Form a circle!"

We moved as a single unit.

Rolf and Kaelith faced outward with their weapons ready, while Nyssa began chanting a wider, much more powerful spell.

I positioned myself exactly between Nyssa and Kaelith.

It was the perfect strategic spot.

A Rot-Hound, clearly possessing more predatory intelligence than the rest, broke from the main pack.

It bypassed Rolf entirely and charged directly at our exposed spellcaster.

Nyssa’s erald eyes widened in terror, and her arcane chant faltered as she saw the feral beast lunging straight for her throat.

There was no ti for a shout. There was no ti for a warning.

I acted.

I neither shoved her nor tackled her blindly.

I spun and placed myself directly in the rabid hound’s path.

As its rotting jaws snapped for my face, I twisted my torso, letting its forward montum carry both Nyssa and violently sideways.

We crashed hard into the massive stone pillar behind .

My body was completely shielding hers.

The brutal impact drove the air from my lungs, but my arm was locked securely around her waist, pinning her flush against the cold, unyielding stone.

THUD!

The hound, having completely missed its target, was t instantly by Kaelith’s descending blade. Its mutated head vanished in a thick spray of black ichor.

SPLURCH!

For a full five seconds, I held Nyssa tightly against the pillar, my body pressed completely flush against hers.

I could feel her frantic heartbeats hamring against my ribs.

Her breath hitched sharply in her throat. She was not struggling.

She was frozen, her brilliant mind utterly unable to process the sudden, violent intimacy of our position.

"Stay against the pillar," I said.

My voice was a low, incredibly calm rumble, my lips hovering re inches from her sensitive ear.

"It is the safest place. Do not move."

She gave a tiny, almost imperceptible nod.

I released her waist and stepped seamlessly back into the fray as if absolutely nothing had happened.

"Rolf, flank right! Push them back toward the center!"

The battle raged on.

We operated like a well-oiled machine, but the Feral Aberrations seed endless. I spotted my next opportunity during a brief, chaotic lull.

A stray strand of acidic webbing from a dying Grave-Weaver had splattered dangerously close to Kaelith’s shoulder, narrowly missing her skin.

She wiped a smudge of dark soot from her cheek. Her expression remained as stoic and unreadable as ever.

I walked over to her, my steps deliberate and asured.

She tensed slightly, fully expecting a new tactical order.

Instead, I reached out. My thumb gently brushed her soft cheek, deliberately wiping away the dark streak of soot.

I held her glacial silver gaze, keeping my own eyes perfectly unreadable.

For three long heartbeats, the bloody battlefield around us completely vanished.

There was only the silent, intense, and highly intimate connection between us.

Kaelith flinched. It was not a large movent, but for the emotionally suppressed Shadow-Knight, it was the physical equivalent of a scream.

Her silver eyes widened almost imperceptibly, and for the very first ti since I had t her, I saw a flicker of sothing other than cold, lethal resolve.

It was genuine confusion.

"A smudge," I said softly, before turning my back to her to face a new wave of monsters. "You are welco."

She did not reply.

She simply stood there for half a second, her slender hand rising unconsciously to touch the exact spot on her cheek where my thumb had just been.

The final wave hit us just as we neared the extraction tunnel.

A massive Grave-Weaver, easily twice the size of the others, dropped from the ceiling directly above Nyssa.

It was a queen.

It did not spit webbing.

It spat a concentrated stream of pure, highly corrosive acid.

HSSSSSS!

There was no ti to pull her away. There was no available cover.

"Kaelith, now!" I scread.

Kaelith moved with blinding speed, but I already knew she would not be fast enough to intercept the acid.

I made a split-second, highly calculated decision.

I triggered the mutable frequency of my F-Grade core.

I did not aim at the enemy.

I aid precisely at the delicate tal clasp of Nyssa’s formal Academy coat.

I perfectly matched the mana signature of the tiny pin holding it together at her collar and pulsed a microscopic, disruptive arcane wave.

SNAP.

The clasp broke.

The heavy, protective coat instantly fell open, fully exposing the thin, sheer white blouse beneath it.

The boiling acid stream, aid directly for her chest, instead splashed violently across the now-open coat.

Nyssa instinctively shrugged the heavy garnt off her shoulders in the exact sa motion.

The acid hissed angrily, eating through the thick fabric but leaving her completely unhard.

SIZZLE.

She stood there for a mont, clad only in the thin, now slightly damp white blouse.

Her erald eyes were blown wide with shock and a sudden, chilling vulnerability.

The entire battlefield seed to pause, captivated by the sight.

Rolf leaped into the air and crushed the queen spider’s skull with a final, rage-fueled blow.

CRUNCH!

Absolute silence descended upon the cavern, broken only by our heavy, ragged breathing.

Nyssa stared down at her ruined, smoking coat on the stone floor, then slowly looked up at .

Her pure academic curiosity was entirely gone, replaced by a raw, deeply fractured look.

She was a genius.

She knew that was no accident.

The timing was far too perfect.

The magical save was far too precise.

I walked over to my own discarded black coat, picked it up, and smoothly draped it over her trembling shoulders.

The fabric was heavy, completely enveloping her small fra and carrying my scent.

"Let us go," I said, my voice utterly devoid of emotion. "We have exactly what we ca for."

As we walked toward the glowing extraction light, I could feel the heavy, burning weight of their stares drilling into my back.

Kaelith’s gaze was filled with a dark, wary confusion.

Nyssa’s mind was a chaotic storm of terror, humiliation, and a terrifying, obsessive need to understand exactly what I was doing to them.

The 72-hour tir in my vision had successfully ticked down to zero and reset.

I had fed the System.

I had survived.

But in doing so, I had just lit an uncontrollable fire under two of the most dangerous won in the Academy.

And they were no longer certain if I was their greatest ally, or the most terrifying monster of all.
