Chapter 52: The Corrupt Crown

High in the violet twilight of the Zenith Academy, Valerius Thorne stood before a glowing magical projection of the Kingdom of Iron and Steam.

The Incubus Lord swirled his blood-red wine.

He was smiling a cold, chilling smile.

The goblin thought he had found absolute safety in the Forge.

Grik was a fool.

Valerius knew the secret rot hiding at the very heart of the Kingdom.

King Alaric Hardsteel was a man consud entirely by greed.

Alaric only wore the crown because he was the eldest.

His younger brother, Marquee, possessed all the intellect and vision, choosing the role of Pri Minister to actually run the country.

King Alaric secretly despised his genius brother.

The King neglected his people to fund a lavish, sickeningly opulent lifestyle.

To maintain his overflowing vaults of gold, Alaric had struck a hidden deal with House Vane.

The King deliberately allowed the Ashen Maw cult to operate in the lower sewers.

The cult bred monsters and harvested raw materials, and the King took a massive cut of the profits.

"The Pri Minister builds machines to save the city," Valerius whispered to the empty room.

"But the King sells the city’s blood for gold. Let the goblin run to the Pri Minister. When he exposes House Vane, he will accidentally back the King into a corner. And King Alaric will crush him."

GRIK’S POV

We stood in the Pri Minister’s private office.

The air slled of polished wood and clean ozone.

I placed the purple crystal staff heavily onto the mahogany desk.

The silver crest of House Vane glead brightly under the lamplight.

"We cleared the nest," I said, my voice perfectly steady.

"It was not just a feral infestation though. It was a breeding ground. House Vane is funding a blood-magic cult right under your industrial sector."

Pri Minister Hardsteel leaned forward.

The heavy gears in his chanical arm clicked with barely contained fury.

He stared at the silver falcon crest.

He had absolutely no idea his own brother, the King, was orchestrating this treason.

"Those arrogant Elven traditionalists," Hardsteel rumbled.

"They think they can breed monsters to destabilize my policies and frighten the workers. I will handle this personally, Grik. I will tear their underground operations apart."

"If you bring them into Court or openly accuse them of sothing this big, they will simply deny it," I pointed out smoothly.

"They will say the crest is a forgery and deny all involvent. How do you plan to make this right?"

"We have a lot of other ans than just dragging them into a courtroom," Hardsteel countered, his tallic voice grinding with authority.

"Politics are critical and ssy. They do not realize they just ssed with the most ruthless Pri Minister this city has ever seen."

I smirked, crossing my arms.

"Well, I will leave the politics to you. But you are not dense enough to ignore the obvious. Soone high up inside the Kingdom of Iron and Steam is actively colluding with House Vane to allow this."

Hardsteel sighed heavily, sinking back into his massive leather chair.

"I know. I was ant to be the King instead of my brother. But I gave it all up because I was not interested in empty power.

I was interested in helping the people on the ground. When I took the Oath to be Pri Minister, I swore to protect them. And I have a very good idea who the traitor might be."

He took a deep breath, calming the whirring pistons in his broad chest.

His stern gaze softened remarkably as he looked at Nyssa and .

"You have done this Kingdom a massive service today. But tonight, I wish to speak simply as a father. Elara is fully recovered. She is hosting a private dinner this evening, and she explicitly asked for the Architect of the New Breath to attend. Please, join us to celebrate her health."

"It would be our absolute pleasure," I replied.

The dining hall of the Iron Estate was warm and incredibly inviting.

Elara Hardsteel sat near the head of the long table.

The terrible sickness was completely gone from her face.

Her pale skin was flushed with a healthy, vibrant warmth.

Her copper hair caught the candlelight beautifully, and her amber eyes were bright and highly intelligent.

As I took my seat, a soft blue interface flickered in my vision.

I smiled inwardly.

I spent the entire dinner displaying flawless, aristocratic etiquette.

I engaged the Pri Minister in polite conversation while ensuring my attention constantly returned to Elara.

I poured her water with my chanical hand, listened intently to her stories of reading books while bedridden, and spoke with a refined, gentle baritone that completely shattered her expectations of a savage monster.

ELARA’S POV

My heart was beating in a strange, frantic rhythm.

I observed Grik quietly from across the table.

I had heard the terrifying rumors of the savage Verdant Hobgoblin who ripped beasts apart in the bloody sewers.

But the man sitting before was a true gentleman.

His dark olive skin and sharp jawline were undeniably handso.

But it was his impeccable manners that truly captivated .

He spoke with such polite, asured eloquence.

Every ti his glowing eyes t mine, a warm flutter erupted deep in my chest.

He looked at with genuine, respectful interest, not as a fragile patient to be pitied.

"The evening air is wonderfully crisp tonight," I said, my voice trembling slightly. "Sir Grik, would you care to accompany for a walk in the garden? I have spent so much ti indoors, and I deeply wish to see the moonlight."

He stood up gracefully and offered a flawless, polite bow.

"It would be my absolute honor, Lady Elara."

GRIK’S POV

The garden was a masterpiece of copper flowers and glowing night-moss.

We walked slowly side by side.

The silence between us was comfortable and highly charged with a sweet, nervous tension.

Elara reached out to gently touch the petals of a chanical brass rose.

It whirred softly, opening to her touch.

"I used to watch this garden from my bedroom window," she said softly.

"For months, I felt like a ghost haunting my own ho. I read countless books about the outside world, about wild magic and distant continents. But I honestly never thought I would get to step foot out here again."

I looked at her, noting the quiet, undeniable strength hiding beneath her delicate appearance.

"Books are an excellent way to survive when the body fails, Lady Elara. But you are not a ghost anymore. You are the very reason this estate has a heartbeat."

She smiled.

It was a genuine, radiant expression that rivaled the moonlight.

"My father is a great man. He builds machines of iron and steam to keep the city alive. But you... you build miracles. I read the schematics he brought ho."

I raised an eyebrow, genuinely impressed.

"You understand arcane engineering?"

"I understand logic," she clarified, her intellect shining brightly through her shyness.

"The scholars always wrote that arcane energy and physical machinery despise each other. They claid the two forces could never mix. But you did not just mix them, Grik. You forced them to understand one another. You made them compromise. How did you know it would work?"

"Because the rules written by old scholars are usually just excuses for their own limitations," I replied, taking a slow step closer to her.

"If two opposing forces refuse to work together, you do not give up. You simply beco the gravity that forces them to align."

Elara’s breath caught slightly.

She looked up at with profound, undisguised admiration.

"You speak of engineering as if it were a grand conquest."

"Everything is a conquest, Elara," I murmured, holding her golden gaze.

"So conquests just require a much gentler touch."

The romantic tension was perfectly prid.

I just needed a physical opening.

My D-Grade core humd quietly in my chest.

I focused a microscopic pulse of kinetic mana toward the stone pathway directly in front of her feet.

I subtly raised a single cobblestone by a re fraction of an inch.

Elara took a step.

Her delicate shoe caught the raised edge.

"Oh!" she gasped, her balance completely failing as she pitched forward.

I moved with my enhanced Agility.

I stepped in seamlessly, wrapping my strong, arm securely around her slender waist.

I pulled her flush against my chest, catching her perfectly before she could even stumble.

Her soft hands flew up to rest flat against my chest.

We were incredibly close.

The scent of her floral perfu mixed wonderfully with the crisp night air.

I could feel her heart hamring wildly against my ribs.

Her amber eyes were blown wide, staring up into mine in total shock.

Our faces were re inches apart.

I could feel her warm, sweet breath ghosting gently across my lips.

It was a shy, beautifully vulnerable mont.

A deep, magnificent blush spread completely across her soft cheeks.

"I have you," I whispered, my voice a soft, comforting rumble.

"You are perfectly safe."

She did not pull away at all.

She stared at , completely srized by the sudden proximity.

"I... thank you, Grik. I am usually not so clumsy."

"The stones are treacherous in the dark," I smiled warmly.

"But I will gladly catch you every single ti you fall."

Her breath hitched sweetly at the words.

Her eyes shone with a bright, innocent infatuation.

I took a respectful step back, giving her a gentle bow.

"I must return to my squad, Lady Elara. But I promise you, I will co to see you again very soon."

"Please do," she whispered softly.

She clutched her hands to her chest, watching with glowing, lovestruck eyes as I turned back toward the estate.

The political board was perfectly set.

The King and the Incubus thought they controlled the ga, but I had just secured the heart of the Pri Minister’s most precious treasure.

The crown of the Forge was finally within my reach.
