Chapter 58: The Apex’s Dilemma

The cool night air of the upper district felt like a massive blessing after the suffocating, clockwork-heavy atmosphere of the Iron Estate’s command room.

We walked in a loose formation, the rhythmic clack of our boots on the polished cobblestones providing the only soundtrack to our thoughts.

Rolf was a few paces ahead, practically humming to himself.

He was clearly still riding the high of his successful date with the Registry receptionist.

"I am telling you guys, I have finally found her," Rolf said, glancing back with a wide, toothy grin.

"She does not care that I am a werewolf. She just thinks I am a great listener who happens to have a lot of fur. I am going to hit the kitchen for a massive snack, and then I am out like a light. Goodnight, everyone!"

He did not wait for a response, bolting through the gates of the Obsidian Bungalow the mont we reached them.

The heavy iron gates swung shut behind him with a resonant thud, leaving the three of us standing in the courtyard.

The silence that followed was heavy, but it was not uncomfortable.

At least, not at first.

"Grik," Nyssa said softly, breaking the quiet.

She stepped closer to my right side, her shoulder brushing gently against my military coat.

She looked up at , her erald eyes soft and inviting behind her silver-rimd glasses.

"I know it has been a long day, but the focusing crystals in the basent lab are perfectly aligned tonight. If you could give just an hour of your ti, we could finally finish that resonance map. And... I made the lounge area down there a lot more comfortable. Lots of pillows."

She reached out, her fingers sliding down my forearm until her organic hand rested gently in mine.

She squeezed softly, her cheeks dusted with a beautiful olive-toned blush.

"Nyssa, seriously? The guy is completely exhausted," Kaelith interrupted.

She pushed off the stone pillar she had been leaning against, moving with that silent, ghostly grace that always felt like a cool breeze.

She stopped on my left, her silver eyes glinting with a playful, possessive spark.

"He has been trapped in a windowless room with the Pri Minister for twelve hours. The last thing Grik needs is to go back underground to stare at more glowing rocks. He needs fresh air on the terrace. I was hoping to show him that new footwork I have been practicing. It is very... intensive. I really need a hands-on partner."

Kaelith stepped in closer, her scent of shadows and dark spice mixing with the cool night air.

She tilted her head, her gaze lingering on my lips for a second too long.

’Oh! This is new! I might get a threeso tonight!’

I thought.

Nyssa’s hand tightened on mine.

She straightened her posture, her scholarly mask slipping just enough to reveal the fierce jealousy bubbling beneath the surface.

"Kaelith, co on. Grik and I have a really deep connection. Our work in the lab is what is going to secure our future here."

"A deep connection?" Kaelith laughed, a sharp, lodic sound that echoed in the quiet foyer as we stepped inside.

"Is that what you call it when you are making those little moaning sounds through the floorboards, Nyssa? Because I am pretty sure ’work’ does not make a girl breathe like that."

The foyer went deathly silent.

Nyssa froze, her mouth falling open as her face turned a shade of crimson that was almost purple.

She slowly turned her head to look at Kaelith, her eyes wide with total shock.

"You... you heard? Wait. Kaelith, how do you even know what that sounds like?"

Kaelith did not back down.

She crossed her arms over her chest, a faint, defensive flush creeping up her dark-hued neck.

"Because I have heard it from the other side of the door, Nyssa. And because I know exactly what Grik’s hands feel like when he stops being the boss and starts acting like a Goblin Lord."

Nyssa let go of my hand, her entire body trembling.

She looked at , her eyes filled with a heartbreaking mix of betrayal and confusion.

"Grik? You... you slept with her too? Are you kidding right now? After everything we shared in the workshop? You told I was special! I gave you my first ti!"

"And he gave a star-silver bracelet and a night I will never forget," Kaelith shot back, stepping into my personal space on the left.

"I thought we had a secret, Grik. I thought I was the only one who could handle you."

I stood perfectly still between them, my Vanguard Arm venting a low, worried hiss of steam.

I had survived the Zenith Academy, dismantled a cult, and deposed a King, but I had absolutely no tactical manual for this situation.

"Girls, please," I started, my baritone voice sounding much weaker than I intended.

"I never ant to hurt either of you. I care about you both, and things just... happened."

"Shut up, Grik!" they both snapped, turning their glares on before looking back at each other.

’Alright! I knew a day like this would co. So I have been feeding them with hints during our sessions in the past three months. Those were the seeds of need. Nyssa and Kaelith both know about my insane stamina increase after the Evolution. They know that they are having a hard ti following my lead.’

The air in the foyer was thick with the scent of lotus and shadows.

For a mont, I honestly thought they were going to draw weapons.

Nyssa’s mana was beginning to swirl in green sparks around her fingers, and Kaelith’s hand was resting firmly on the hilt of her dagger.

Then, Nyssa took a long, shaky breath.

She pushed her glasses up the bridge of her nose and looked at Kaelith.

She really looked at her.

They had lived together for three months.

They had cooked together, laughed over Rolf’s stupidity, and protected each other in the darkest sewers of the Forge.

They were not just rivals; they were best friends.

"Kaelith," Nyssa said, her voice dropping to a softer, more vulnerable register.

"I... I am not going to give him up. I cannot. He is the first person who ever valued my mind instead of my family’s na."

Kaelith’s silver eyes softened, the icy wall around her heart finally cracking.

She let out a long, weary sigh.

"I know, Nyssa. I cannot give him up either. He is the only one who sees as a woman instead of just a blade."

Nyssa nodded, a strange, analytical calm washing over her face.

She looked at my towering fra, tracing the black circuit lines of my evolution and the sheer physical presence I now commanded.

"Think about it, Kaelith. He is a Goblin Lord now. An Apex Variant. The books on monster biology are very clear about this kind of thing. A leader like him, with a core that dense... he is not ant for just one girl. It is literally in his genes to build a pack. To have a harem."

Kaelith blinked, a slow, wicked grin beginning to spread across her lips.

"A pack, huh? Is that your expert scholarly opinion, Nyssa?"

Nyssa’s blush returned in full force, but she did not look away.

She stepped closer to the assassin, the two of them forming a unified front.

"It just makes sense. We both love him. We are best friends. Why should we be fighting over who gets which night when we can just... share him?"

Kaelith chuckled, walking closer until she was pressing against my left arm.

"You know, Nyssa, I always did love team projects."

Nyssa stepped up on my right, sliding her hand back into mine and leaning her head affectionately against my shoulder.

"And collaborative research is always the most fun."

I looked from the brilliant scholar to the lethal assassin, my heart hamring against my ribs.

The tension had shifted from a war zone to a furnace in the span of a few sentences.

"So," I murmured, my voice a low, vibrating growl.

"What are the new rules of engagent?"

Nyssa looked up at , her erald eyes hazy with a mix of deep affection and raw lust.

"There are no rules, Grik. We decided that a guy like you deserves both of us tonight."

Kaelith reached up, her cool fingers tracing the line of my jaw.

"We are going to your room, boss. All three of us. And we are not leaving until you prove you can handle a double shift."

A slow, predatory grin spread across my face.

I wrapped one arm around Nyssa’s waist and the other around Kaelith’s, pulling them both flush against my body.

The Sovereign’s Conduit in my chest roared with absolute approval.

"I think," I whispered, the steam from my arm venting in one final, triumphant huff, "that I am more than ready for the test."

I led them toward the grand staircase, the two most dangerous and beautiful won in the kingdom clinging to with a fierce, shared devotion.

The Cult of the Ashen Maw was still out there, and the Zenith Academy enforcers were on the horizon, but as the door to my master suite clicked shut behind us, I knew that my foundation was now truly unbreakable.
