Annabelle felt like a bucket of cold water had been dumped on her. She pushed her away in disgust. "What are you, a dog?"
Ashley Grant burst out laughing and said naughtily, "Annabelle, is this how you used to seduce my brother? If I were him, I’d keep you in bed for three days and three nights."
When Annabelle heard this, she stopped in her tracks, her gaze instantly turning cold.
She stared ahead expressionlessly, her eyes like bottomless pools—unfeeling and icy.
"Your brother?" The corner of Annabelle’s mouth twitched into a cold, ambiguous smile. "Heh..."
Ashley’s words made her recall the first ti she and Leona Grant had been intimate.
For a year after they’d gotten married, they were husband and wife in na only and had never been intimate.
At one point, Leona Grant had started his own company. Business was booming, but just as it was about to go public, it was hit by a financial crisis and nearly went bankrupt.
That financial crisis caused too many people to lose their entire fortunes, and countless committed suicide by jumping from buildings.
Leona Grant was a proud and very capable man. He would rather go bankrupt than use the Grant Family’s money, and he had his own way of bringing his company back from the brink.
Only, she didn’t know that.
Seeing the company on the verge of bankruptcy, she went from person to person with contracts, begging for partnerships to give his company a glimr of hope.
But when a client was pressuring her to drink, Vivian Yates brought him to that sa bar to witness the whole thing. In front of everyone, Leona Grant berated her, calling her shaless and promiscuous, and utterly humiliating her.
Then, Leona Grant dragged her ho, stuffed a towel in her mouth, and punished her for the entire night.
He had said, "Annabelle Linton, when we got married, I told you I would never love you. But I never thought you’d be so wanton, so cheap! Did you enjoy cuckolding ? Well, now isn’t it my turn to enjoy myself?"
She cried and tried to explain, but she couldn’t get a single word out.
There wasn’t a shred of tenderness in the entire ordeal. The only things he gave her were endless pain and humiliation.
It was her first ti. She had always imagined it would be with soone she loved, but she had never, ever thought it would be under those circumstances, with those feelings, in that way.
’A mory seared into her soul.’ Annabelle let out a derisive snort. A flash of sorrow, then self-mockery, flickered in her eyes.
’He so obviously disliked her, yet she had been so utterly devoted to him.’
There was a saying Annabelle now understood in her bones: ’Wasting your passion on the wrong person is just debasing yourself.’
She rose to her feet, graceful and poised. "I’m going to bed. There’s a computer in the next room. Feel free to use it."
Leona Grant watched Annabelle walk into the room barefoot, his Adam’s apple bobbing.
He had been staring at her just now, so he had also seen the self-mockery and sorrow in her eyes.
He knew why.
Leona Grant’s brow furrowed slightly. Sothing stirred in his heart.
Before, he would never have cared what she did. But now, a single look from her was enough to leave him agitated.
’Everything was a ss.’
It was as if this past month had been silently narrating sothing, changing sothing.
And he was powerless to stop it.
