"Do I need to understand?"
Her expression remained blank as Annabelle Linton gazed nonchalantly at Leona Grant, her serene deanor a stark contrast to his fury.
Looking at her indifferent expression, Leona Grant felt an unprecedented wave of frustration wash over him.
Leona Grant shut his eyes tightly. The knot of frustration in his chest wouldn’t loosen, so he let out a long sigh. "Annabelle, a businessman who has famously avoided won for years doesn’t just approach soone for no reason. He must have a motive. He’s only getting close to you for his own purposes.
I’ve seen too many n like him. I don’t want you to beco his pawn, only to be cast aside later. Don’t make an irreversible mistake on a whim. Even if there are no feelings between us, we’ve known each other for more than twenty years, and we were married. I’d warn a complete stranger about this. So, I want you to stay far away from him."
"Well now, I wasn’t aware Mr. Grant was the type to bad-mouth people behind their backs. I don’t believe we’ve ever had any dealings, have we, Mr. Grant?" Chase Lynch chid in, stepping in front of Annabelle.
A sharp glint flashed in Leona Grant’s eyes before he instantly reverted to his usual cold deanor. He gave a cynical smirk. "I have no interest in bad-mouthing others, nor would I deign to. I’m simply stating a fact.
As I understand it, President Lynch, you were engaged to the daughter of Albion’s Duke Randall. An engagent that was broken just two months ago. Now you’re suddenly approaching Annabelle, a woman with whom you have no connection. Your little act might fool so naive young girl, but was I wrong to say you have ulterior motives? Are you feeling flustered now, President Lynch? Or are you just refusing to admit it?"
"If two people aren’t compatible, they shouldn’t be together. Just look at you and Annabelle, Mr. Grant. Even with an engagent from childhood and a two-year marriage, with no feelings between you, it still ended in divorce, didn’t it?
I wouldn’t force myself to be with soone I don’t like. If the feelings aren’t there, they aren’t there. Nothing can change that. Besides, our engagent was purely for business, not mutual love. Calling it off was only a matter of ti. What, are you going to ddle in my personal life now too, Mr. Grant?"
Chase Lynch’s hand rested naturally on Annabelle’s shoulder. He gazed down at her tenderly, his warm breath ghosting over her skin. "A motive... of course I have one. Annabelle is the first woman I’ve ever truly liked. Since you and Annabelle are divorcing, Mr. Grant, I finally have a chance to pursue her. You don’t like her, but I do. You don’t want her, but I do. I want to win her over. That’s my motive."
Leona Grant’s expression darkened instantly. "Are you challenging ?"
"Heh, how could you call this a challenge? I’m rely stating a fact, just as you were. This is also for Annabelle’s benefit—an explanation. I want her to know I’m approaching her simply because I like her.
Don’t you hate being entangled with won, Mr. Grant? Well, good news. You’re getting a divorce, so you’ll be free. From now on, you two will just be strangers to each other. So, I hope you’ll leave Annabelle alone. Don’t disturb her, and don’t disturb *us*. Thank you for leaving such a wonderful woman to . In the future, when we get married, we’ll be sure to invite you to the wedding. And to our baby’s full moon celebration, too."
Hearing this, Annabelle Linton shot him a cool glance but didn’t expose his act.
But in Leona Grant’s eyes, this exchange was blatant flirting.
His face, which had just regained its cold composure, instantly darkened even further.
"Annabelle Linton, I need an explanation!"
