"Annabelle... P-Please... just do this for... for Grandpa... I’m begging you... okay?" Before Annabelle Linton could speak, she heard Patrick Grant’s pleading voice.
Annabelle Linton looked at Grandpa.
Grandpa’s breathing was shallow, his face deathly pale. It seed as if every word he spoke drained him of all his strength.
All the kindness Grandpa had shown her over the years flashed through her mind.
She didn’t want Grandpa to die. She didn’t want him to leave her like this.
Annabelle Linton grasped Grandpa’s hand, promising, "Okay, okay, Grandpa. I’ll agree to anything. As long as you make it out safely, our family will live in the old residence, all of us together forever. But you have to promise sothing too—you have to make it out safely, okay?"
Patrick Grant didn’t answer. Instead, he squeezed Annabelle Linton’s hand, gave a weak smile, and turned his face to look at Leona Grant.
"Leona, what about you? Can you promise Grandpa, too?"
Leona Grant agreed with virtually no hesitation. "I promise you. I’ll agree to it all. I will stay with Annabelle Linton and we’ll build a good life together. Our family will always live together in the old residence."
"Good... good..." Patrick Grant murmured, then passed out.
"Grandpa! Grandpa!"
Annabelle Linton and Leona Grant, horrified, imdiately called for the doctors.
The doctors were already on standby and, without a second’s delay, rushed Patrick Grant into the operating room to begin the surgery.
Annabelle Linton watched the "In Surgery" light above the operating room flick on, then sank into a chair in the waiting area.
She wanted to cry. She just wanted to cry so badly.
On one hand, it was because of Grandpa’s condition.
On the other, it was because she had promised Grandpa she wouldn’t divorce Leona Grant.
A sharp pain emanated from deep within her heart, jarring her every nerve.
She had known Leona Grant for more than twenty years, and she had been miserable for more than twenty years.
Every day, Leona Grant was the first person she saw, the first person she thought of, the only person on her mind.
Every day, the very first thing she did was look for him. He was the first person she wanted to see when she woke up and the last person she wanted to see before she fell asleep.

Annabelle Linton hated the hand fate had dealt her. She buried her face in her knees and wept in sorrow.
Leona Grant stood beside Annabelle Linton.
He sensed her distress and wanted to walk away.
But his feet seed to have a will of their own. In the end, he stayed.
Instead of looking at her directly, Leona Grant’s gaze fell on a reflective window in the distance, which perfectly mirrored her every movent.
He knew she was crying.
With her defenses lowered, her cold facade stripped away, and her fierceness tad, she looked utterly helpless and pitiful.
He knew why Annabelle Linton was crying.
’Is it because she can’t divorce ? Is that why she’s in such agony?’
Leona Grant couldn’t understand what he had possibly done to make her hate him this much.
And he would never know.
