The man looked down and gently asked the girl in his arms, "How are you? Are you okay?"
The girl kissed him and said coquettishly, "I’m fine. Honey, what took you so long? I’ve been waiting for half an hour. The movie’s already halfway over."
The man said guiltily, "I’m sorry, honey. I was in a eting and just got so busy I lost track of ti. It’s not that I don’t care about you, I was just really swamped. Please don’t be mad at , okay?"
"Oh, forget it. My husband has to work hard to support our family, I know it’s not easy. I forgive you. But don’t let it happen again!"
The man kissed the girl back, then wrapped an arm around her and they left.
The boy on the ground watched their retreating, embraced figures. He seed to freeze, as if dumbstruck. Then, snapping out of it, he collapsed to the floor and began to sob his heart out.
Leona Grant watched the boy on the ground break down and cry. Strangely, he didn’t feel any contempt or disdain. Instead, there was a kind of... inexpressible sympathy.
’Why am I feeling this way?’
’Why couldn’t that girl have waited for him a little longer?’
’It was obvious the boy loved her. They grew up together, they had so much history. He knew he’d made a mistake, so why did she have to be so heartless?’
’They would have been so happy together. He promised her so much.’
Leona realized that coming here had been a bad idea.
He’d co to calm down, but now he only felt more agitated.
Leona took another drag from his cigarette. Suddenly, a thought struck him.
’Annabelle Linton was discharged from the hospital today. Where would she be right now?’
’The old family estate? The Linton residence? Our ho?’
’The most likely place... is our ho!’
Leona’s eyes lit up. He dropped his cigarette and rushed ho.
When he got ho, all the lights in the villa were off.
Leona eagerly ran upstairs. Sure enough, he saw Annabelle’s door was ajar, the light from within still glowing.
A hint of an excited smile touched his lips. He walked quickly to Annabelle’s door, but stopped dead in his tracks—
Annabelle had just bumped into the coffee table, hitting her wounded knee.
She was frowning, trying to bandage the wound on her knee.
Annabelle was wearing a beautiful nightgown, but every inch of her exposed skin was covered in scrapes. There wasn’t a single unblemished spot.
A first-aid kit sat beside her. On the floor was a large pile of blood-stained gauze.
Annabelle had just placed a clean piece of gauze over her knee, but blood imdiately seeped through.
She had no choice but to tear it off and throw it to the ground. She tried to stanch the bleeding, but it wouldn’t stop, trickling down her pale leg.
Wincing in pain, she frantically rummaged for sothing to stop the bleeding.
Witnessing this scene, Leona’s heart clenched tight. It was like being stung by a bee—a sharp, sudden pain.
’He’d never imagined this...’
Annabelle was looking down, searching for so antiseptic, when she caught sight of Leona in the doorway. She froze for a mont, then her gaze turned cold.
Leona could see the distance, the indifference, the ice in her eyes. His Adam’s apple bobbed as he swallowed, his voice coming out dry and hoarse. "Do you need hel—"
SLAM! Without a word, just like the last ti, Annabelle slamd the door shut.
Leona opened his mouth, then clamped it shut. He stood frozen in place for a long mont before finally turning and slowly walking back to his room.
Halfway there, he stopped and turned, his gaze lingering on her closed door.
The light cast a shadow across his angular face. Leona pressed his lips together, a desolate air about him as he continued back to his bedroom.
