The female, still hunched on the vivacious tree, was barely able to keep herself calm. The voice in her head was screaming at her to run away from there before they found her, but she stayed. She had figured out that by the way these n were talking about her, it wouldn't be a good thing to suddenly show herself to them. When one of them passed below the tree she was benching on, her breathing stilled and she couldn't help tensing her body.
The n scoured the area but couldn't find the female. The fire torches they had lit on a stick provided enough light to see what was before them. Minutes later, they all grouped where they had first found traces of her stay there, except that one of them was missing.
The girl looked at the ash and cursed — sothing she was good at and always doing — at herself for being ignorant enough to not completely clear the place. She waited with bated breath as she watched them whisper amongst themselves.
“Where's the last person?” One of them had asked and was replied with another confused voice, “who?”
The person was slapped at the back of his neatly shaven, bald head by another male who pointed out that one of their n was missing.
“There's no need to look for him again,” A male, whom the girl had taken to be the leader of the gang said.
“B-but —!” One of them tried refuting against his claims but was shut up when the leader spoke up once more; “Fine then, go.” He dared, moving aside, making way for the male which led into the dark expanse of jungle.
“Unless you want to end up like him, that is,” he concluded and the male who wanted to speak up against him wisely kept shut.
Wanting to hear what they were talking about, she shifted her position on the tree, partly because her legs were feeling numb. That little movent made blood flow back to her legs and it felt as though ants were crawling on her feet. She wanted to stand up, but couldn't because she had to be still for them not to catch her.
The female, who was hunched on the tree, didn't know that that little movent she had taken made the branch she was on creak slightly, but loud enough to sound out in the otherwise quiet forest. As quickly as lightning did the n turned around, now facing the tree.
“Boss?” One of them hesitantly said.
The leader nodded his head at one of them, who later moved with his lit fire torches to the base of the tree where the female was hiding. He looked around the tree but didn't see anything unusual, and he indicated to the rest of them with a small shake of his head. The man was about to move back towards them when another pushed him aside, muttering along the lines of, “you can't just seem to do anything right.”
The man who stepped towards the tree looked down at the ground, there which he saw the footings of a person, as though soone had tried climbing it. He whistled and shouted out to the others; “over here!”
They all huddled around that spot; then the leader began to wave his torch around looking for sothing — for her.
She had an idea, as she stretched out her arm and shook the leaves of the other branch. The leader, after looking for the tree for what seed like an eternity, shifted his gaze, saying “false alarm,” while he glared directly at the male who had called out to them.
A warning.
The female released a long breath of relief when they left the area. She then positioned herself to be relaxing on the tree, with her legs lying limp on both sides of the branch. Resting her head on the trunk of the tree, she slept that night waiting for dawn to greet her once more.
