“Hello, is this Dominic?” A burly voice answered my question. “Yeah, who’s asking?” A wave of nostalgia hit at the familiar voice. “A friend. You had a crush on a girl in grade school because she beat you up. You like Effie from The Hunger Gas more than Katniss. The only guy you’d be gay for is Jason Momoa.” The end of the line went silent for a few seconds before he ca over it again. “Man, the fuck you talkin' about?”
I couldn’t help but chuckle now as he would listen. “The apocalypse is about to drop. Make sure you store food and water above ground level, and buy cigarettes because they’ll be more valuable in the future. Actually, move most of your valuables, the stuff you don’t want to be ruined, to your second floor, or the salt water will ruin it. You can confirm this is the truth in two days when they announce it, so good luck, and I hope we et up again in this life.”
With that, I hung up before going back to the phone book. “Hello, is this Duke?” Soone who sounded like a more nasally Matthew McConaughey answered. “Yeah, that’s .” I was straightforward with him. “The apocalypse is going to happen soon. It’ll soak the first five feet of your house, so move everything you don’t want ruined and make sure you buy a lot of cigarettes because they’ll be valuable in the future. Oh, everything valuable includes your guns, of course, and make sure you take that old diesel generator out of your basent because it’ll co in handy.”
“You want to move hundreds of pounds out of my basent. Fuck you, you better give a better excuse than the fuckin god dang apocalypse.” I gave him a heads-up. “Pay attention to the news and move it before the wave hits when you see it’s real. Good luck, and I hope we et again in this life.”
Hanging up, I go to dial the next number, but Duke tries to call back. I pick up. “What the fuck you an by that? Pay attention to the news bullshit you’re talkin’ about? You better make it more clear or we’re gonna have a problem.” I sighed as I was surprised he knew how to call soone back on his wall phone. “Just pay attention to the news, and you’ll see that the asteroid hit the planet and didn’t miss. It’ll cause heavy flooding, which almost no one will be prepared for, and tons of stuff, as well as food, are going to be ruined. Think about how a flood of saltwater would affect growing corn… It will kill off all crops and salt the land in the process.”
“Sheeeeet. Fuck man, I think you’re telling the truth. This ain't a prank, right? Well, anyway, I’ll let you go. Good luck with the whole apocalypse thing. I've got to go prep so things.” I hung up again, hoping I didn’t just alert the police that soone found out that the Earth was going to go through a sudden upheaval. I called the last person I needed to tonight. Everyone else I could convince in person, and my plans were shifting and changing as I kept talking to people. I needed sowhere better than this shitty apartnt to bunker down.
The person connects on the opposite side of the phone and asks. “Hello? Who’s this… You’re not on my contacts… Is this a collect call or scam?” A deep, saddened smile crossed my face as I heard her voice again. If my power did only this, just let talk to her again, it would be worth it.
“Hello, Sophia. My na’s Danny. I don’t want this to sound creepy, but I need you to believe . You have a mole on your left butt cheek. You and your sister got in trouble practicing kissing each other when you were young. You thought a guy was going to attack you, only to find out you lost your wallet and he was attempting to give it back to you. Your favorite movie is The Princess Bride, and it’s because you had a crush on both the main character and Inigo Montoya. You used to watch that under your blankets while playing with yourself.”
She sounded spooked by everything I said. “H-how do you know that?” She never admitted that was why she liked the movie, at least in this lifeti she hadn’t… It was far too embarrassing for her to say to anyone who wasn’t her boyfriend, and she didn’t have a boyfriend yet. “I’m from the future. Listen closely. In two days, they’ll announce that the asteroid did hit and there is nothing to worry about, but there is. It’ll cause a wave that wipes out Canada and floods most of Arica.”
I felt sick as I was about to tell her one of the worst things she had ever gone through again in an attempt to stop it. “I’ll tell you right now that your kennels are too low to the ground. Any animal you store will drown before you can save them… Don’t let that happen this lifeti, as terrible as it sounds, just let them live with you on the second story of your house so they don’t die, and make sure you have enough food for a few months… Don’t go outside when the rain stops, and make sure you have warm clothes upstairs. I’ll be over after the storms calm down.”
I couldn’t help but feel a tear run down my cheek as I tried to hold back my emotions. She was one of the first people I t with another power, and hers was extrely useful. We were together for about a year before she was killed… I got my revenge, but that wouldn’t happen this ti around. I wouldn’t give him the chance.
The person I knew the most about besides myself was the man who killed my first love. I had sex before, but the connection Sophie and I had was so strong. It was a completely different feeling from the girls I tricked into having sex with or the prostitutes I hired. I saw myself growing old with her, and I was both happy to have that chance again and angry at the person who should be dead was alive again.
I grab the ornate sword off the wall and I store it into my storage. I hadn’t even checked to see if everything I had stored made the trip back with . Pulling out one of the enhancent syringes, I couldn’t help but smile as I had a decade's head start on the process humanity would make in creating drugs to give humanity a fighting chance against all the infected and themselves.
The trip was going to take six hours both ways, but he needed to die. The powerless loved to kill the powerful to make themselves feel powerful. No reason, he killed her for no reason… Only because he was a normal human and wanted to kill soone powerful. He destroyed the best survivor town I was ever part of just because he felt inadequate. He wouldn’t get that chance in this life.
I knocked on his door, hoping he would answer. It was late at night already, close to eleven, but Adam was a gar before the apocalypse. As he answered the door, I barely recognized him. He was very close to morbidly obese right now, and I only saw him after he shed all the weight, struggling to stay alive. He didn’t ask who I was, just waited for to talk. I looked around before seeing that the door didn’t have a Ring doorbell and kicked him square in his chest before closing the door.
“W-what! What did I do?” Pulling the sword out, I didn’t give him a chance to speak. This wasn’t a drama where I had to tell the bad guy why I was killing him. I don’t care if his life was different now; he would die no matter how many tis I went back. One of the first things I’d do would be to kill this fucker who killed my girlfriend. One flick of the wrist has his head separated from his shoulders. He pissed and shit himself as he died and I stored his disgusting body. When the apocalypse really began in a few days, I’d dump his body sowhere. People like him don’t deserve to be buried and only deserve to end up dead in a ditch.
