The following morning, people from the whole neighborhood were walking out of their buildings pulling suitcases as if they were going on a vacation.
It was obvious that they had made the decision to go to the safe base that the military had announced about the day before.
However, there were still so people within the building that Leng Pan and her family lived in that didn’t move at all.
One of these people was Janna, the fourteen-year-old girl who lived alone and had joined Leng Pan and others to go on a hunt for supplies.
She had decided from that day that she would follow Leng Pan, and since she hadn’t seen any movent from her floor, she decided to wait.
Another person was Juan Ke who was also sitting in his living room with a small generator beside him powering a movable heater.
The weather was getting colder and was already below ten degrees. It could be seen that soon everything would start to freeze.
He wondered how long such a cold weather would last, especially now that there was practically no power most of the day and he didn’t know when it would be completely cut off.
During the hours when power was on, he could use the electric heater installed in the apartnt to warm himself. But at tis like these when there was no power, he could only rely on a generator.
He had thought about going to those electronic shops or sothing to look for solar panels to install in the apartnt so that he could at least have solar power, but looking at the changes in the weather, he doubted that there will be any sun to power those panels.
So, he could only turn to the gasoline-powered generator to heat the area around where he was sitting. Luckily, he and his wife had divorced and he didn’t need to heat a larger area, otherwise, he would need more fuel since he would probably have to use two heaters.
At that mont, he was also thinking about whether the Lu family would go to the base for their own safety.
But he had a hunch that they didn’t want to be restricted by the rules of a safe base. They must want to act according to their own plans, so he doubted that they would have any plans to go to the base.
However, he was still paying attention to the top floors in case they decided to really go.
A few other apartnts were the sa including Xu Man and his wife. Ever since that day they had gone to collect supplies and Xu Man had witnessed how harmonious and happy Lu Zhen and Leng Pan were even in the apocalypse, he had changed his ntality completely.
Now he no longer thought that he was supposed to be the shining star and his wife was his foil. He enjoyed sharing everything with his wife and even asking for advice about their future plans.
Unlike before when he would make plans and simply inform his wife as if she didn’t matter and her opinion wasn’t important, now he was happy to ask for her thoughts and suggestions.
Like at that mont when they stood at the door and watched so many people carrying their belongings down the stairs and preparing to go to the base without a second thought.
"Wife, do you think we should also prepare to go?" Xu Man looked at his wife standing on one side of the door and asked.
"No, we made a decision to follow Mr. and Mrs. Lu and we should stick to it. Do you think that the base that will collect people from all sorts of backgrounds will be safe for us or our children?
That place is going to be like a market that has collected all sorts of things, whether treasures or garbage. All of it will be there.
If we go there, our lives may beco even worse than it is now. Also, do you really think that the governnt is inviting people to go there to live for free? They will probably turn those capable into slaves." Mrs. Xu was very clear headed at that mont.
How could there be a free lunch anywhere? Especially in the apocalypse when resources are so scarce? There is no way that the governnt will let people live there for free and give them food, water, and shelter without paying a price.
Xu Man indeed hadn’t thought much about the announcent earlier. Since the governnt said that they would provide everything, he had taken it at face value and hadn’t questioned their motive or ability to feed and shelter so many people.
Now that he heard what his wife said, he realized that he had thought too simply about things. He was glad that he had changed his attitude towards his wife earlier and asked for advice from her. Otherwise, if he made the decision to just go to the base the sa way he made decisions before, then his wife would definitely not say anything and would just follow everything he said.
Now he realized how his ego had made his life more difficult. He vowed that he would never treat his wife like that again.
"Then we should wait and see what the Lu family does. Since we will be following their lead, maybe we should go and talk to them instead of waiting here without knowing anything." Xu Man suggested this because he thought that the Lu family didn’t know that they were going to be their followers.
It was better to be straightforward instead of making plans while the other party was unaware.
