At Ashwell, the intelligence arrived at the evening briefing.

"The pinkskin thundermakers are empty," Sakh'arran said. "The last balls were fired at Ashford Junction. The thundermaker capability that the kingdom built over three generations of dwarven trade is exhausted. The boomstick ammunition is at twenty-six percent and declining."

Khao'khen sat with the information for a long mont.

The chieftains were assembled at the command table for the evening assessnt, the daily briefing that Sakh'arran provided from the Verakh network's comprehensive surveillance. The briefing had been the sa briefing for twenty-six days: the barbarians advance, the kingdom retreats, the ammunition decreases, the Horde waits. Tonight's briefing was different because tonight's briefing contained the specific data point that changed the campaign's strategic calculation.

"Empty," Khao'khen said.

"Empty. The thundermakers are eight-ton sculptures. The boomsticks have approximately two engagents' worth of ammunition remaining. After two more battles, the Threian military fights with swords."

"And the barbarians?"

"The barbarians' dwarven supply continues. The latest Verakh count shows eleven supply wagons arriving through the mountain passes in the past ten days. The barbarians' ammunition is unlimited. The barbarians' advance is forty miles from the capital."

Khao'khen looked at the map. The map that had been telling the sa story for weeks was now telling a different chapter of the sa story. The chapter where the kingdom's weapons were gone and the barbarians' weapons were not and the distance between the barbarians and the capital was a distance that the kingdom's remaining military capability could not defend.

"Sakh'arran."

"Chief."

"The convergence."

"The convergence is here. The kingdom's military capability has reached the threshold that I identified three weeks ago. The thundermakers are gone. The boomsticks are nearly gone. The king's army is sixteen thousand and unable to sustain engagents without firearms support. The barbarians are seventeen thousand with unlimited supply and forty miles from the capital."

"And the combined force?"

"Aldrath's thirty-one thousand remain positioned north of the capital, watching us. If Aldrath redeploys to the barbarian front, we have access to the capital. If Aldrath remains, the barbarian advance reaches the capital unopposed from the northeast."

"The pinkskins are trapped between us and the barbarians."

"The pinkskins created the trap themselves. They alienated their weapons supplier. They fought a war against us that consud their military resources. They created the conditions for the barbarian invasion by stripping their northeastern garrisons to reinforce the eastern campaign. Every elent of the trap is a consequence of their own decisions."

* * * * *

"Thrak'gul pinkskins," Krak'thul said, from the position where the warrior had been listening to the briefing with the 4th Warband's senior fighters. The comnt was delivered at the volu that Krak'thul used for strategic observations, which was the volu that the entire camp could hear.

"Rock-brained pinkskins. They ran out of balls! They spent their balls on us and then they spent their balls on barbarians and now they have no balls! Krak'thul does not feel sorry for pinkskins who run out of balls! Krak'thul has balls! The Horde has balls!!"

"Krak'thul's comntary has reached a new level of anatomical ambiguity," Sakh'arran observed.

"Krak'thul is speaking about ammunition. Krak'thul's anatomical observations are reserved for the battlefield where Krak'thul's anatomical observations have tactical relevance."

"The relevance is unclear."

"The relevance is always clear to Krak'thul. The clarity is Krak'thul's gift."

Dhug'mhar contributed from the Rumbling Clan's position. "Perfection notes the convergence that the chief's analytical officer has described. Perfection further notes that Perfection has been maintaining peak operational readiness for twenty-six days specifically for this convergence. Perfection is ready. Perfection's mount is ready. The Rumbling Clan is ready. Perfection requests the chief's guidance on when Perfection's readiness will be converted into Perfection's operational deploynt."

"When the mont is correct," Khao'khen said.

"Perfection trusts the chief's assessnt of mont correctness. Perfection's trust is based on the chief's historical accuracy in mont selection, which is, by Perfection's count, one hundred percent across four months of continuous operations."

"Vor'kash drak," Arka'garr said. We fight as one. The statent was not a comnt on the strategic situation. It was the 1st Warband master's confirmation that the 1st Warband was ready for whatever the convergence produced.

Khao'khen looked at the map one more ti. The barbarians to the northeast. The capital between the barbarians and the Horde. Aldrath's force between the Horde and the capital. The king's army between the barbarians and the capital. Four forces, each one watching the others, each one waiting for the others to move, each one's movent constrained by the movents of the others.

"We send a ssage," Khao'khen said. "Not to the council. To Aldrath."

The room was quiet. ssages to Aldrath were ssages between commanders, the military communication channel that bypassed the political structure and spoke in the language that military professionals shared.

"Tell Aldrath that the Horde is aware of the northeastern situation. Tell him that the Horde's position at Ashwell is defensive, not offensive. Tell him that the Horde has no intention of assaulting the capital while the barbarian threat to the capital exists from the northeast. Tell him that the Horde's interest is Yohan's security, and Yohan's security is served by the kingdom's survival in a form that can honor agreents. Tell him to consider the implications."

"You are telling him to redeploy," Sakh'arran said.

"I am telling him to consider the implications. What he does with the consideration is his decision. But the consideration's content is clear: the Horde is not the threat to the capital. The barbarians are. And thirty-one thousand soldiers watching an army that is not attacking are thirty-one thousand soldiers who are not fighting the army that is."

The ssage departed Ashwell under white flag at the evening hour. The wolf's direction remained northeast. The wolf watched. The wolf waited. And the wolf had just spoken, not with a war cry but with a whispered suggestion that might change the shape of everything.

The ssage was carried by a Verakh under white flag, the sa protocol that every diplomatic and military communication of the campaign had used. The Verakh rode north toward Aldrath's camp with the ssage's content sealed in the case that Sakh'arran's precise hand had addressed, the case bearing the wolf mark that Aldrath's intelligence officer would recognize as the mark of the orcish commander's personal communication.

The ride took two hours. The Verakh arrived at Aldrath's periter at the evening's tenth hour and was received by the picket line's officer of the watch, who escorted the rider to the command tent with the specific professional courtesy that four months of military engagent had established between two forces whose mutual respect had been earned through the mutual destruction that the engagent's battles had produced.

The ssage was delivered. The Verakh departed. The decision that the ssage demanded was now in the hands of the commander whose four months of fighting the orcish army had produced the specific understanding that the ssage's content relied on: the understanding that the orcish commander said what he ant and ant what he said, and that the aning was always consistent with the interest that the aning served, which was Yohan's security.
