The signal instrunt was a glass-and-copper assembly mounted on the research chamber’s north wall, calibrated to translate dinsional energy fluctuation into a reading on a copper dial graduated in precise incrents. Darak had been recording its readings three tis daily for six weeks. The needle had held at fourteen percent so consistently that he had begun noting the exact position of the needle’s tip at each asurent, because the consistency itself had beco the data. An instrunt that did not vary was either working correctly or broken, and confirming which one was which required docuntation that made the pattern explicit.

At the third hour of the night, on a cold-hardened evening when the orcish security contingent outside was running its rotation change and the research chamber’s braziers had burned low, the needle moved.

Not gradually. Not in the slow creep that had built the deviation over six weeks. It jumped.

Fourteen. Then twenty-three. Then thirty-one, by the ti Darak had woken Aliyah from the small room off the corridor and brought her into the chamber.

She stood at the instrunt in her working clothes, hair unbraided, and watched the needle climb. She had made this walk in the night before, for other readings and other ergencies, and she had the quality that night ergencies produced in people who had answered enough of them: awake imdiately, fully present, no transition period between sleeping and operating.

"How fast?" she asked.

"Seven points in eleven minutes. Maybe twelve." Darak was writing every reading as it ca, filling the notation lines with the controlled speed of soone who understood that accuracy and pace were both required and that panic contaminated both. "If the rate holds, we reach the safety margin’s limit in four days. If it accelerates, less."

"Get the signal ready." She was already moving toward the Keystone chamber.

The Keystone chamber held its seven stones in their sockets, pulsing with the rhythm the Order of the Seal had maintained since the Arch’s sealing at Tessara. Six of them pulsed with the clean regularity that structural integrity required. The third was wrong in a way that took Aliyah a full mont to identify, standing in the doorway with the brazier light playing across the stones.

The third Keystone was not pulsing faster. It was not fading. It was pulsing with a gap in the rhythm, a break, and then it corrected, and then the break returned.

Like sothing breathing.

She crossed to the chamber floor and placed both hands flat on the stone housing, closed her eyes, and sent her perception into the dinsional fabric the way the Order’s training had taught her: carefully, in controlled incrents, deep enough to feel what was pressing but not deep enough to be felt pressing back. The Order’s instructors had been specific about that boundary and why it mattered. Cross it, and the thing being observed beca aware of the observation, and the dynamic changed in ways that were not always recoverable.

What she felt was not the flat static pressure of the fourteen-percent plateau. The plateau had felt like a weight resting on the binding, inert, the way a stone rested on a surface. This was different. The pressure built in a slow wave, held for three seconds at the peak, then eased. Then built again. The interval between peaks was consistent, not the consistency of a chanism but the consistency of sothing alive that had found its optimal pace and settled into it, the way a long-distance runner found the stride that let them cover ground without exhausting themselves before the finish line.

She withdrew and opened her eyes.

"It learned," she said, to the empty chamber.

The fourteen-percent plateau had not been a resting point. It had been a asurent period. Whatever pressed against the third Keystone from the other side had spent six weeks at precisely that level, feeling the binding’s resistance curve, understanding where the binding absorbed pressure and where it pushed back, learning the elasticity of the seal the way a smith learned a new tal by working it carefully and with attention until its behavior beca predictable.

Now it was cycling inside the elasticity window. Building pressure during the binding’s passive phase, releasing before the reactive threshold fired, then building again. Staying inside the zone where the seal resisted least. Increasing the cumulative load without triggering the counter-response that would slow the increase.

It was exactly what she would do if she were trying to open a door from the wrong side and could not afford to make noise.

She walked back to the research chamber. Darak looked up from the instrunt.

"Send the signal," she said. "Full ergency protocol. Rakh’ash’tha at Yohan and the two nearest Arch locations. Priority courier for the Order’s Chapter at the capital." She sat down at the writing table. "And bring the binding’s maintenance log for the past three months. I need to know what the third Keystone’s reinforcent schedule has been."

Darak moved to the signal cabinet. "The deviation is still climbing."

"I know. How far are we from the safety margin?"

"Approximately three points. At the current rate, we reach it before dawn."

Aliyah looked at the third Keystone through the doorway. Three points. She had reinforced Keystones under deviation before. The work was difficult and consud ti and perceptual resources that she could not recover quickly. If she began now, at the third hour of the night, she would be working through until midmorning. She had done that before too.

"Get the log," she said. "And the signal. In that order."

She picked up her own pen and began writing the ergency ssage. Outside, the security contingent’s second watch was at their posts, watching a dark and ordinary-looking mountain facility that contained a sealed dinsional gateway that sothing, on the other side, had spent six weeks quietly learning to open.

She wrote the ssage in the Order’s formal protocol. She described what the instrunt showed and what she felt behind it and what both ant. She wrote clearly and completely, because whoever received this needed to understand the situation from the docunt alone, without the ambient hum of the Arch to make the abstract concrete.

She sent it with the fastest rider in the security contingent and turned back to the Keystones.

She returned her attention to the instrunt log in the early hours of the morning, sitting in the chair that she had occupied for most of the past four days and reading back through the full six weeks of readings from the beginning. She was looking for whether the approach period itself contained information she had not extracted. The fourteen-percent plateau had been consistent to such a degree that she had treated it as background. Now she was reading it as foreground.

What she found, when she read it as foreground, was that the plateau was not perfectly flat. There were micro-variations, small enough to have been attributed to instrunt vibration or temperature effects on the copper dial. Looked at individually, they were nothing. Looked at as a sequence, they had a structure. The micro-variations were themselves a pattern, embedded inside the plateau at a scale below the deviation threshold she had set for alert notifications.

The Abyss had been communicating inside the asurent noise for six weeks.

She wrote this in the log in the margin beside the plateau entries. She did not know yet what it communicated. She knew it was there. That was the beginning of understanding it, and the beginning was the only place you could start.
