Now reading: Chapter 168 168: The Gamble Under the Table from Rotting Land: Survive, a Sci-fi novel by Kiwi 008.

"How are you doing?" Hu Xiaodong casually dragged a table near the door and placed it sideways behind it, serving as a simple defensive asure.

"I'm fine!" Dazhuang seed indifferent as he wiped the blood off his face, the flas between his eyes still burning fiercely.

"You~" His mouth opened slightly, but Hu Xiaodong ultimately gave up and closed it.

He originally wanted to reprimand Dazhuang for the danger of his recent actions.

But on second thought, given the current psychological state of the other party, even if he spoke, he might not listen, and it might further provoke his emotions.

So...

He raised his hand to press down on Dazhuang's figure because Hu Xiaodong had already heard the gradually approaching swishing of dragging footsteps from both ends of the hallway.

"Get inside! Don't make a sound! Don't show your head!"

Without a doubt, the zombies appearing now were recently pouring in from the rooms and the entrance of the epidemic station. Hu Xiaodong was unsure whether these zombies had seen them.

But regardless of the outco, he hoped they hadn't noticed them because if another head-on confrontation occurred, given the current combat power comparison, Hu Xiaodong could only hope this pharmacy room's door was sturdy enough.

In the empty corridor, the shuffle of corpse feet seed like the pendulum of hell, repeatedly striking the chords of the survivors' hearts; the blood sll was so intense it made people nauseous.

Sweat dripped like a stream, quickly gathering into small puddles on the white floor.

Hu Xiaodong instinctively nudged himself further inside the table, as if doing so could hide his figure.

"Bang~"

The door made a slight tapping sound, and Hu Xiaodong's heart imdiately jumped to his throat. He could even discern the number of zombies outside by the shadows cast on the floor.

What were they doing? Through the flickering shadows, Hu Xiaodong speculated that the beasts hadn't discovered them.

This result slightly relaxed his tense nerves, but unpredictable events occurred. His brief joy lasted only two seconds when he heard the glass beside the door shatter with a "crash"... "It broke."

No words could describe Hu Xiaodong's feelings at that mont. Watching the glass shards continually break and fall, he felt his hope also crumbling and collapsing bit by bit.

Instinctively tightening the cleaver in his hand, Hu Xiaodong almost rushed out, but a sliver of wishful thinking in his mind tily halted his actions.

"What now! Beasts have co up! Are we still hiding here?"

Dazhuang's deep voice ca to his ears, Hu Xiaodong glanced back at him, dark under the table, his eyes seed like flas burning fiercely, emitting a scorching glow.

How could he not understand Dazhuang's aning, but Hu Xiaodong stubbornly intended to gamble on it.

After all, there's no turning back once the bow is drawn. If they rise against the enemy, there will be no retreat.

Therefore, he subconsciously wished perhaps that incident was rely the result of zombies accidentally bumping into them.

"Wait a little longer!" He gestured for silence and listened closely.

The developnt did not go as Hu Xiaodong wished because as soon as he finished speaking, the door began to vibrate.

The irregular vibrations struck again and again, and the wooden table against the door also inevitably creaked.

Imagine, what kind of "thrill" Hu Zhuang experienced hiding inside.

Logically, with the situation developing to this point, they should rise and face the enemy, otherwise, when the door breaks and zombies swarm in, even if you are prepared to fight, there may not be a chance.

But Hu Xiaodong still firmly held onto Dazhuang's arm and kept silently signaling him not to act impulsively.

Why? Because he felt the zombies were too gentle at the mont. In other words, if the beasts really discovered them, they would desperately want to break in, yet now... They were just "playing"!

The impacts continued to echo from behind, but the force and frequency gradually decreased.

Moreover, the shadows cast on the floor also started thinning.

This, to so extent, confird Hu Xiaodong's judgnt was correct, at least for now. Zombies indeed hadn't discovered their presence.

As for the initial intense behavior of the zombies, it likely stemd from the noise of the shattering glass.

Silently waiting for a few more minutes, the footsteps in the hallway suddenly beca chaotic again, and listening carefully, Hu Xiaodong noticed the beasts seed collectively moving to sowhere... that seed outside the hallway.

This puzzled Hu Xiaodong, for even if the zombies hadn't discovered them, to move this group away, sothing must attract them. Otherwise...

Unable to protect himself, Hu Xiaodong didn't bother considering anything else. After waiting a few more minutes, the rustling in the hallway finally vanished completely, and everything returned to calm once again.

With a gentle body stretch from under the table, Hu Xiaodong raised his eyebrows to glance upwards. Seeing no unusual movent, he motioned to Dazhuang to squeeze out together.

After ten minutes of cramping, it was inevitable that Hu Zhuang would experience numbness in their arms and legs. However, they dared not be complacent now, for no one knew if zombies still lingered outside the corridor.

Maintaining a half-crouched position, Hu Xiaodong reached for a piece of shattered glass and quietly moved to the wall, then used the window fra's gap to extend the shard outside.

Although the glass shard couldn't clearly show the corridor scene due to its transparency, through its blurred image, Hu Xiaodong could faintly understand the outside situation.

The zombies were gone! After nurous rounds of searching around, Hu Xiaodong concluded this final judgnt.

It was an incredibly fortunate thing, so much so that Hu Xiaodong couldn't believe it for a long ti!

However, regardless of why the zombies left, the danger hadn't entirely dissipated.

After all, no one could guarantee these mindless beasts wouldn't suddenly make a return attack, so... they must urgently complete their tasks and leave this cursed place.

Thinking along this line, without much to say, Hu Xiaodong imdiately joined Dazhuang in rummaging through the pharmacy.

But after searching for a while, they realized that for people like them without dical experience, the nas of various drugs were akin to fairy tales. They didn't know what to take and what to leave.

Helpless, they decided to go all out; opening their backpacks and adopting an attitude of "greedy invaders," they started sweeping things into their bags.

Just as they hadn't been gathering for long, Hu Xiaodong suddenly stopped his actions and, for no reason, asked: "Dazhuang! Did you... hear sothing?"
