High above the glittering skyline of the city, where the stars peeked out between the clouds and the traffic buzzed like a stream of fireflies far below, the sleek, gleaming sword soared through the night air.

The wind whipped around them, the cool breeze brushing past their faces as the sword flew like a phantom bird over rooftops and towers.

Mika stood in the middle of it all, his legs spread out awkwardly as he trembled and tried to keep his center of balance.

He shifted one foot forward, then back again, then turned slightly, crouched, then stood again, as if trying to find so equilibrium that simply refused to exist. His arms flailed a little before he managed to plant them on his knees, muttering under his breath.

Finally, with a sharp huff of frustration, he barked out loud over the rushing wind.

"Are there no seatbelts on this thing?!" He shouted, his voice full of pure indignation and panic. "Not even a railing? A rope? A safety harness? Anything?!"

"I an, co on! This thing is completely open, just a narrow slab of sharpened tal suspended in mid-air! No walls! No backrest! What if soone sneezes and falls off?!"

He glanced down at the dizzying height below them and visibly paled.

"And while we’re on the topic, why this sword?! If you had to use one, at least use a broadsword or sothing with so width! This is like standing on a goddamn ruler! I can’t even balance properly on it! What kind of death-defying circus act is this?! I didn’t sign up for tightrope walking without a net!"

Yelena, standing at the front of the sword, her hands calmly guiding it through the air as though she were piloting a spaceship, glanced over her shoulder with an infuriatingly cheerful smile.

"Oh, Mika." She said, as if he was a child that had just complained about not getting sprinkles on his ice cream. "This sword’s aerodynamic structure makes it perfect for fast travel. You wouldn’t believe how much slower the chunkier swords are."

"But what about safety?! Speed ans nothing if you’re falling to your doom! That’s the reason normal people use cars with seats and seatbelts! Not magic blades of death with nothing to grab onto but regret!"

Charlotte, behind him, gave an audible sigh and leaned in to poke both his cheeks with her index fingers, squishing his face.

"Oh please, stop being such a baby." She said in a tone that was sowhere between teasing and exhausted. "If anyone shouldn’t be scared of flying, it’s you."

He tried to jerk away, glaring back at her. "What’s that supposed to an?"

She folded her arms with a huff. "What I’m saying is you literally don’t even need a sword to fly! You could just blast off into space if you wanted and probably return with a piece of the moon in your hands."

"Even if you do fall, you’d probably crater the street and co out with your hair still looking the sa! Basically you can’t die. You can’t even get bruised. You’re built like a walking, flying tank."

"That’s not the point!" Mika snapped, spinning back around and waving his arms. "You don’t understand! I’m not scared of dying or falling or getting hurt. That’s not what this is about!"

He jabbed a finger into the air, his tone taking on an almost lodramatic wail.

"It’s about the trauma! Trauma, I say! I have unresolved flying trauma!"

Charlotte blinked. "Wait, what trauma?"

Mika threw his head back with a groan, as if the very thought aged him twenty years.

"Don’t ask . I don’t wanna talk about it. It’s too painful. The mories...ugh."

Charlotte’s brows furrowed, now thoroughly intrigued. "Wait, wait, what do you an? What mories? What happened?!"

He turned to Yelena, jabbing a finger at her accusingly. "Ask her! She knows! She was there!"

Yelena, who had been suspiciously silent, suddenly cleared her throat and turned her face forward, away from their eyes.

"Oh dear. Are you still hung up on that?"

He scowled and batted away the gentle tap she gave to his head. "Yes, I am still hung up on it! I almost lost my life after all!"

Charlotte’s mouth fell open as she leaned forward even more.

"Wait, what!? What the hell happened?! Mama, tell ! Tell now!" She gasped, bouncing excitedly on the sword.

"Charlotte, don’t jump! Are you crazy?!" Mika shouted, clutching the sword like it was the last raft on Earth. "You wanna fall and get impaled by your own fans’ selfie sticks?!"

But she was relentless, practically vibrating with energy. "Co on, mama, tell ! What happened?! I need to know! What did you do to him?!"

Charlotte demanded, practically bouncing in place like a kid begging for candy. Her eyes were gleaming with anticipation, the kind only soone on the verge of uncovering deep, juicy blackmail could have.

Yelena chuckled softly, shaking her head like she was brushing dust off an old, forgotten story.

"It’s not really that big of a matter." She said with a sly smile. "And it happened such a long ti ago that I doubt Mika even rembers it properly."

Mika, already sensing doom, shifted uncomfortably. "I definitely rember it."

Yelena ignored him and continued, casually brushing a hand through her hair as if what she was about to reveal was a tale from soone else’s life.

"It must have been over a decade ago. Mika was probably four years old at the ti, and Charlotte, you were just about five."

Charlotte leaned forward eagerly. "Yeah, yeah, yeah! And?"

"Mika back then..." Yelena began slowly, her eyes gleaming with amusent. "...was absolutely terrified of flying swords back then. The re sight of one made him cling to like a wet sock."

Charlotte gasped dramatically. "No way! Seriously?! Mika?!"

"Oh, completely." Yelena nodded with pride. "Every ti I took him on my sword to go anywhere, he would latch onto my leg like a barnacle. The mont we lifted off, the crying would begin. Loud, dramatic, tear-filled sobs."

Charlotte burst into laughter. "Oh my god, that’s hilarious! I’ve been riding swords since I was literally a baby and I didn’t cry once!"

"Of course you didn’t." Yelena said sweetly. "My daughter was a brave girl from the start." Then, without skipping a beat, she glanced down at Mika. "Mika, on the other hand, was such a cry-baby that sotis...well, I had to tie him up to get him on the sword."

Mika groaned, slapping his hand over his face. "I wasn’t a cry-baby. I was just...appropriately concerned about my safety!"

Charlotte giggled uncontrollably. "Cry-baby! Scaredy cat!"

Mika turned to her with a glare. "You’re the weird one! Who enjoys zooming around in the sky on a glorified knife?! That’s not brave, that’s insane! I was the only normal person back then. You and your other sisters were the oddballs!"

Yelena rolled her eyes dramatically. "That’s exactly why I knew I had to do sothing about it. That fear couldn’t go on forever."

Mika paled instantly. "Oh no..."

Yelena smiled mischievously at Charlotte, clearly enjoying the lead-up. "So one day, I took him all the way up near the clouds."

Charlotte tilted her head curiously. "Like, for a lesson?"

"Well..." Yelena grinned. "You know how so parents throw their kids into a swimming pool to teach them how to swim?"

"Yeah!" Charlotte nodded quickly. "It’s supposed to be this like, shock therapy thing, right?"

"Exactly." Yelena said. "So I figured...sa concept. Except instead of a swimming pool, I had the sky. And instead of a gentle nudge..."

"...I pushed him off my sword."
