Now reading: Chapter 19 — The Night She Could Not Sleep from SSS-Rank Brides: The Hunter Who Married Dungeon Queens, a Fantasy novel by Didas312.

The fortress slept uneasily.

Torches flickered along stone corridors, their light wavering in drafts that should not have existed. Guards doubled their patrol routes. Even veteran hunters spoke in lowered voices.

When dragons appeared in the sky...

Instinct rembered.

Predators were awake.

Inside his quarters, Ethan lay on his back staring at the ceiling.

Again.

Sleep refused to co.

The Dragon Mark pulsed faintly beneath his skin — not painful, but alive, like a second heartbeat that never quite settled.

The Dungeon Brides System shimred softly.

Bond Activity ElevatedCause: Dragon Bride Wakefulness

He frowned.

"...Wakefulness?"

A quiet knock answered the question.

Except it wasn’t really a knock.

More like restraint.

As if the person on the other side was unused to asking permission.

Ethan sat up.

"You can co in."

The door opened imdiately.

Lyssara stepped inside.

Barefoot.

Silver hair unbound, falling freely down her back in moonlit waves.

She wore a simple night wrap — pale, soft, utterly unlike the regal attire she showed the world.

And her expression...

Was troubled.

"You couldn’t sleep either?" he asked gently.

"I do not require sleep as humans do."

"That wasn’t the question."

She closed the door behind her but did not move farther into the room.

For a dragon who feared nothing...

She suddenly looked uncertain.

"I felt your heartbeat quicken," she said quietly.

"The bond carried it to ."

"...That goes both ways," he replied.

A pause stretched between them.

Then she admitted—

"I did not wish to be alone tonight."

The vulnerability in that sentence hit harder than any battlefield confession.

He shifted, sitting upright against the headboard.

"You never have to be."

Lyssara approached slowly.

Each step silent.

asured.

When she reached the bedside, she hesitated only a fraction before sitting beside him.

The mattress dipped.

Cool air brushed his skin.

"I have not felt unrest like this in centuries," she said.

"Ignivar shook you."

"No."

Her gaze lifted to his.

"The thought of sothing strong enough to take you... did."

Ethan exhaled slowly.

"You’re still on that."

"Yes."

Her fingers tightened lightly in the blanket.

"Dragons anticipate threats long before they arrive."

The system chid.

Protective Instinct: HeightenedDragon Anxiety Response Detected

He gave a quiet huff.

"I never pictured dragons having anxiety."

"We call it vigilance."

"Sounds less marketable."

That almost pulled the faintest curve from her lips.

Almost.

Silence fell again — softer this ti.

Then Lyssara spoke, voice barely above a whisper.

"May I stay?"

The question stunned him more than if she’d simply climbed into the bed.

"You’re asking again."

"I am learning your customs."

"You don’t need permission."

Her eyes searched his face.

"...I want it."

Sothing warm settled in his chest.

"Then yes. Stay."

She slid beneath the covers beside him.

Careful.

Controlled.

Yet the mont her body aligned with his, the bond surged warmly between them.

Cold t heat.

Balanced instantly.

The system glowed brighter.

Lyssara exhaled slowly.

"...Better."

"Told you."

For a while, neither spoke.

They simply lay there — shoulders touching, breaths gradually falling into rhythm.

Then—

Almost absentmindedly—

Her hand found his.

Fingers intertwining beneath the blanket.

Not passion.

Not urgency.

Just need.

"You are warr than the bath," she murmured.

"I hope that’s a complint."

"It is."

Her thumb brushed once across his knuckles.

"I am unused to this."

"To what?"

"...Wanting soone near."

He turned slightly toward her.

Moonlight spilled across her face, softening the ancient sharpness of her beauty.

"You’ve never... stayed beside soone before?"

"Not like this."

A pause.

"Dragons are solitary."

"Well," he said quietly, "you’re doing great for a beginner."

She studied him.

Then shifted closer.

Tentative.

Her head settled lightly against his shoulder.

The movent was so unguarded it stole his breath.

The Frost Dragon Queen...

Cuddling.

If the guild saw this, they’d collapse.

"Is this acceptable?" she asked softly.

He smiled.

"Very."

Another long silence passed.

But this one was peaceful.

Until—

"Ethan."

"Yeah?"

"If another sovereign cos..."

Her fingers tightened slightly.

"...and I am not enough..."

He turned fully toward her now.

"You are."

"You cannot know that."

"I know you’d tear the sky apart trying."

A flicker of emotion crossed her eyes.

"You speak as if that is admirable."

"It is when soone’s fighting for ."

She watched him for a long mont.

Then her hand rose — fingertips brushing his cheek with surprising gentleness.

"You make ... softer than I have ever been."

"That a complaint?"

"...No."

Her thumb traced slowly along his jaw.

"But softness is dangerous for creatures like ."

He covered her hand with his.

"Good thing I’m here to make sure you don’t go too soft."

A quiet breath escaped her.

Almost a laugh.

Then—

Without warning—

She pressed her lips to his shoulder.

Not heated.

Not demanding.

Just there.

The Dragon Mark pulsed warmly in response.

The system chid.

Lyssara lingered a mont before whispering—

"I can hear your heartbeat slowing."

"That’s because you’re finally relaxing."

"...Stay awake a little longer," she said.

"Why?"

"I enjoy the sound."

He huffed softly.

"You’re unbelievable."

"Yet you chose ."

"Best decision I ever made in a collapsing dungeon."

Her eyes softened at that.

Then her lashes lowered.

Minutes passed.

Maybe more.

Eventually, her breathing deepened — not sleep exactly, but sothing close.

Trust.

Before he drifted off, Ethan felt her fingers tighten faintly in his shirt.

And then she whispered sothing so quiet he almost thought he imagined it.

"My king..."

A pause.

"...no one will take you from ."

For once...

He believed her completely.

Outside, the night stretched on.

Dragons circled distant skies.

The world grew more dangerous by the hour.

But in that bed, beneath shared warmth and quiet breaths...

The Frost Dragon Queen found sothing she had not known she was missing.

Not power.

Not dominance.

Not eternity.

Peace.
