By nightfall, the fortress had learned a new rhythm.

Watch the skies.

Strengthen the barriers.

Whisper about the groom.

Ethan tried not to notice the way conversations died when he passed.

Tried not to see the mixture of awe and fear in the hunters’ eyes.

Failed completely.

"This is getting weird," he muttered as they walked the upper ramparts.

Lyssara moved beside him — silent as snowfall, regal even beneath the dim torchlight.

"You will grow accustod to it."

"I preferred being ignored."

"You were never ant to remain small."

The wind curled around them, sharp with mountain cold. Below, the forest stretched into darkness — too quiet after the sovereign storm.

Ethan leaned against the stone wall.

"Can I ask you sothing?"

"You may ask anything."

"When sovereigns sense each other..."

He lifted his veiled hand slightly.

"...what exactly do they feel?"

Lyssara’s gaze drifted toward the horizon.

"Pressure. Authority. Hunger, sotis."

"Hunger?"

"For dominance. Territory. Rare power."

Her silver eyes returned to him.

"You feel it too, do you not?"

He hesitated.

"...Maybe."

It had started subtly.

A strange awareness at the edges of his senses.

Not sight.

Not sound.

More like... presence.

As if the world had gained depth overnight.

The system flickered.

Sovereign Tolerance — StabilizingPeripheral Mana Sense: Awakening

He frowned.

"...I think sothing’s changing again."

Lyssara stepped closer imdiately.

"What do you perceive?"

He closed his eyes.

Focused.

At first, there was only the wind.

Then—

A flicker.

Movent below the rampart.

Multiple heartbeats.

Uneven.

Panicked.

His eyes snapped open.

"Soone’s running."

Lyssara went still.

Monts later, boots thundered up the stairwell.

A young hunter stumbled onto the wall, breathing hard.

"My Queen!"

Lyssara didn’t turn.

"Report."

"Scouts returning from the western pass — sothing attacked them in the forest. Not a beast... they said the shadows were moving."

Ethan’s ring cooled faintly.

Lyssara noticed.

Her voice dropped.

"How many?"

"Three made it back. Two still unaccounted for."

A pause.

Then Ethan spoke.

"We’re going down there."

The hunter blinked.

Lyssara looked at him.

"No."

"They’re your people."

"They are soldiers."

"They’re alive," he corrected.

Her gaze sharpened.

"You do not yet understand what hunts in darkness."

"Then teach on the way."

For a long mont, winter asured him.

Then—

She exhaled softly.

"...You will remain beside at all tis."

"Wouldn’t dream of anything else."

The forest swallowed sound.

Torches hissed as frost gathered along their edges. Hunters spread in a cautious formation behind their queen, weapons drawn but visibly unsettled.

Ethan walked at Lyssara’s side.

The deeper they moved beneath the trees...

The clearer that strange awareness beca.

"There," he said suddenly.

Lyssara stopped.

"You sense sothing?"

He pointed.

"About fifty ters ahead. Two heartbeats."

A hunter whispered,

"He’s right... I sll blood."

Lyssara glanced at Ethan — sothing like approval flickering briefly.

They pushed forward.

The missing scouts were found quickly.

One slumped against a tree, pale but breathing.

The other stood nearby, blade shaking in his grip.

"My Queen..." he rasped.

"What attacked you?" Lyssara asked.

The scout swallowed.

"I never saw it clearly. Just... shapes. The dark got thicker. Then claws from nowhere."

The shadows at the base of the trees shifted.

Ethan felt it instantly.

A ripple.

Predatory.

"Lyssara," he said quietly.

"I know."

The torches dimd.

Not from wind.

From absence.

Light was being consud.

The system scread.

Sothing peeled itself from the darkness.

Tall.

Distorted.

Edges unraveling like smoke.

Where its face should have been...

Nothing.

The hunters froze.

"Do not look directly into it!" Lyssara commanded.

The wraith moved fast.

Too fast.

It lunged toward the wounded scout.

Ethan didn’t think.

He stepped forward.

"Stop."

The word left him before he realized what he’d done.

But it wasn’t just a word.

It carried weight.

Pressure.

Authority.

The world seed to hesitate.

The wraith stuttered mid-lunge.

Just for a fraction of a second.

The system detonated.

Lyssara’s eyes widened.

"...Ethan."

He felt it now — power vibrating down his spine.

Not borrowed.

Not forced.

Answering.

The wraith shrieked silently and recoiled.

Then Lyssara moved.

Frost erupted from her palm.

Ice spears pierced the creature, locking it in place before it could dissolve again.

With a sharp gesture, she shattered it into drifting shards of shadow.

Silence crashed back into the forest.

Hunters stared.

Not at the remains.

At Ethan.

"He... stopped it," one whispered.

Lyssara turned slowly toward him.

"Do you understand what you just did?"

"...Panicked?"

"You commanded it."

The system chid again.

Ethan looked at his hands.

"...I told it to stop."

"And the world listened," she said quietly.

Sothing fierce sparked behind her composed expression.

Pride.

Dangerous pride.

The rescued scout coughed weakly.

"My Queen... was that your power?"

Lyssara’s gaze never left Ethan.

"No."

The single word spread through the hunters like wildfire.

On the walk back, they gave him space.

Not avoidance.

Deference.

He hated how natural it already felt.

"You need training," Lyssara said once they were beyond earshot.

"Already?"

"You are awakening far faster than anticipated."

He rubbed his neck.

"Is this the part where you throw into brutal lessons?"

Her eyes softened slightly.

"I do not throw what I value."

The fortress gates opened ahead.

Warm light spilled outward.

As they crossed the threshold, Ethan noticed sothing else.

People stepped aside automatically.

Heads lowered.

Not fully bowed...

But close.

He leaned toward Lyssara.

"...Are they doing that because of you?"

"No."

Realization settled slowly.

"Oh."

Inside her private hall, she finally stopped walking.

Then turned to him.

Without warning, her hand lifted — cupping his cheek.

"You are becoming dangerous," she murmured.

"Should I apologize?"

"Never."

Her thumb brushed his skin.

"You protected them without hesitation."

"That’s what leaders do, right?"

The word lingered between them.

Leader.

Her gaze deepened.

"Yes," she said softly.

Then, quieter still—

"My king."

The Dragon Mark blazed in response.

Before he could react...

Lyssara leaned forward.

Her lips pressed gently against his.

Not hunger.

Not heat.

A slow, deliberate claim.

Cold at first.

Then lting.

The bond roared alive.

When she pulled back, her eyes shimred faintly.

"You gave your first command tonight," she said.

"Rember this feeling."

Ethan’s heart hamred.

"I don’t think I could forget."

She stepped closer.

Forehead brushing his.

"Good."

Outside the chamber, frost crept quietly across the stone.

Because sothing irreversible had just begun.

The groom was no longer rely surviving sovereign attention.

He was learning to wield it.

And far away...

In a palace drowned in eternal night...

Crimson eyes opened slowly.

Noctyra smiled to herself.

"Oh," the vampire whispered into the dark.

"He’s starting to speak."
