The blinding bolt of super-heated pink plasma slamd directly into Miller’s chest.

It was a completely unfair fight. Miller was just a Level 12 worker. He wore cheap scavenged iron armor that he had repaired himself. He carried a basic pickaxe.

Kato was a Level 65 Plasma Berserker. He was the Guild Master of the Neon Syndicate. He was wearing fully upgraded cybernetic gear.

The damage calculation was not even a contest.

The plasma bolt instantly lted right through Miller’s iron chest plate. It burned a massive glowing hole straight through his avatar’s body.

Miller collapsed backward. His pickaxe clattered against the dark rocky floor of the trench.

[HP: 0 / 450]

The remaining nineteen miners scread in absolute horror. They pressed their backs against the dirt walls of the canyon. They dropped their tools. They held their hands up in surrender.

Miller lay on the ground. He could not feel his legs. His vision was already starting to turn gray. He knew what was happening. His health bar was gone. The ga engine was preparing to delete his avatar and shatter his real world nervous system.

He was going to die. Here in the dirt over a cart of purple rocks.

Kato stood at the edge of the trench looking down. He blew a wisp of smoke off the barrel of his glowing pink plasma pistol. He smiled a cruel mocking smile.

"I told you," Kato sneered. "Wrong answer."

Kato looked at the other terrified miners. He pointed his pistol at them.

"Kill them all," Kato ordered coldly. "Leave the ore. Let’s send a ssage to this Player V."

The thirty Neon Syndicate mbers standing on the ridges raised their high-tech energy rifles. They aid down into the trench. They were going to slaughter the unard workers just for fun.

Miller’s vision was fading fast. His physical body was starting to turn into bright blue digital pixels. He only had a few seconds left before his code was scrubbed from the server.

But Miller was a loyal guy. Declan had opened the gates of the Iron Bastion for him. Declan had given him a safe place to sleep when the world ended.

Miller gritted his teeth. He ignored the burning pain in his chest. He used the last tiny fraction of his system stamina to pull up his guild interface.

His fingers were trembling and turning into blue light. He tapped the ergency icon on his screen.

[System Prompt: Initiate Ergency Guild Broadcast?]

Miller hit yes.

A small invisible recording drone popped out of his system interface. It instantly recorded Kato’s face. It recorded the Neon Syndicate mbers aiming their guns. It recorded the massive cart of Void-Ore that they were stealing.

"Boss," Miller coughed and spit up blue pixels. "They took the ore."

[Broadcast Sent.]

A split second later, Miller’s avatar completely shattered. He exploded into a shower of bright blue digital dust. His body was gone.

Up on the ridge, the Neon Syndicate opened fire. Neon green and hot pink laser bolts rained down into the canyon. The remaining miners did not stand a chance.

Miles away inside the protective black iron do of the Earth Sanctum.

Declan was standing near the massive stone forges. He was watching Bram hamr a piece of glowing steel into the shape of an automated turret. The city was loud. Thousands of players were walking around trading gear and organizing hunting parties.

Everything was running smoothly. The economy was booming.

Suddenly a loud blaring alarm went off inside Declan’s head.

It was not the standard server chi. It was the specific alert for the Eclipse Legion guild channel.

Declan frowned. He opened his system interface.

A glowing red video file popped up directly in the center of his vision. It was marked with a high-priority death log tag.

"What is this?" Declan muttered. He tapped the play button.

The video instantly expanded. It showed a first-person view from the Bone-Ash Wastes. Declan saw the dark dirt walls of the mining trench. He saw the cart full of valuable Void-Ore.

And then he saw the guy standing on the ridge.

It was a guy with brightly dyed hair wearing a flashy neon leather jacket. The guy was holding a smoking plasma pistol.

Declan watched the video play. He heard Kato’s arrogant voice.

"Kill them all. Leave the ore. Let’s send a ssage to this Player V."

The video violently shook. Declan saw the blue pixels floating in the air. He heard Miller’s final choking words.

"Boss. They took the ore."

Then the video cut to static.

Declan stood perfectly still. The loud clanging of Bram’s hamr faded into the background. The chatter of the city sounded like static.

Declan just stared at the empty error screen.

He didn’t scream. He didn’t punch a wall. His face just went completely and terrifyingly blank. His pitch-black eyes filled with swirling purple energy locked onto the system interface.

Sloane was walking over from her Quartermaster desk. She had a glowing digital clipboard in her hands.

"Hey boss," Sloane said while looking down at her notes. "We just got a weird ping from the border. I think one of the mining teams disconnected."

Declan slowly turned his head to look at her.

Sloane stopped walking. She looked at his face. She instantly took a step backward. The clipboard nearly slipped out of her hands.

She had seen Declan fight a fifty-man army. She had seen him drop a space station on a giant worm. But she had never seen him look like this.

He looked like pure murder.

"Declan?" Sloane whispered. "What happened?"

"A guild called the Neon Syndicate just ambushed my mining team," Declan said. His voice was incredibly quiet. It carried a heavy and unnatural bass that made the stone pavent vibrate. "They executed Miller. They killed the rest of the crew. And they stole my rocks."

Sloane gasped. She covered her mouth with her hand. "Miller? The guy with the wife and two kids living in the hospital wing?"

"Yes," Declan stated.

"Oh my god," Sloane breathed. Her eyes filled with panic. "It must be Sector 9. The Neon Syndicate is from Sector 9! They are an endga player-killer guild! They have guns, Declan. They have plasma weapons and cybernetics!"

Declan did not care what they had.

He did not care if they had laser rifles or nuclear bombs.

They had broken the most important rule of the Iron Bastion. You do not touch the Warlord’s property. You do not steal his resources. And you definitely do not kill his employees.

It was terrible for business. It was a direct insult to his authority.

"Sloane," Declan said smoothly. "Watch the desk."

He turned around and started walking toward the center of the city. He walked straight toward the massive black iron monolith that controlled the Sanctum Core.

The players in the courtyard noticed his aura. The air around Declan grew incredibly heavy. The gravity shifted. People stumbled and quickly backed out of his way.

Declan walked up the stone steps of the central keep. He stopped right in front of the glowing purple terminal.

He placed his hand flat against the cold black iron.

He didn’t pull out a weapon. He didn’t summon his armor. He just opened the administrator dashboard.

"System," Declan commanded in his mind. "Open the global broadcast channel. Override the chat cooldowns. I am using my Abyssal Sovereign authority."

The terminal flashed. A massive golden text box appeared in his vision. It asked him to input his server-wide ssage.

Declan did not type a long dramatic speech. He did not ask for a peace treaty. He did not demand an apology.

He just typed one single sentence.

He hit send.

BONG!

A massive and deafening bell chid across the entire planet. It rang in the ears of every single surviving player on Earth. It echoed through the ruined streets of Sector 7. It echoed through the bright neon-lit skyscrapers of Sector 9.

A giant golden banner unrolled across the dark smog-choked sky.

[Global Server Announcent: Administrator Override by Player V]

Millions of players stopped what they were doing. People fighting monsters paused. People hiding in basents looked at their system interfaces.

The text burned brightly in the sky for everyone to read.

[Player V: The Neon Syndicate is marked for total deletion.]

The global chat instantly exploded.

It moved so fast it looked like a waterfall of white text.

[User_Ironclad: Oh my god! Player V just declared war!]

[Mage_Girl_99: The Neon Syndicate?! Kato’s guild? They have like forty thousand mbers!]

[Rogue_Shadow: Player V is insane! Sector 9 has actual guns! He can’t fight a modern army with swords!]

[GuildLeader_Rex: Buy popcorn guys. The Warlord of Sector 7 is about to get wiped out.]

Down in the mining canyon, Kato saw the golden text in the sky.

The leader of the Neon Syndicate laughed out loud. He spun his plasma pistol around his finger and holstered it.

"Total deletion?" Kato sneered. "What a joke. He thinks he can threaten us from behind his little do? Let him co. We will turn him into Swiss cheese before he even crosses the border."

Back in the Iron Bastion, Declan closed the terminal.

He looked up at the sky. He read his own golden ssage floating in the clouds.

A dark terrifying smile spread across his face.

"Get your guns ready, Kato," Declan whispered. "I’m coming over."
