"Or," Sebastian said quietly, "we’re going to discover that we’re capable of more than we thought. That we can be present without being brutal. That we can comfort without destroying."

Nicholas opened his eyes and looked at his brother.

"You actually believe that?" he asked.

"No," Sebastian admitted. "But I’m going to pretend to believe it. And maybe, if we all pretend hard enough, it becos true."

The door to the office closed as Sebastian left to follow Lucian.

Nicholas stood alone in the quiet of his office, and he understood that everything had changed. The rule was broken. The agreent had been shattered. And within the next few minutes, one or both of his brothers would be in Lilith’s room, crossing a line that couldn’t be uncrossed.

He moved to his desk and poured himself a drink.

The whiskey was sharp against his throat, but he welcod the burn. Because pain was sothing he could understand. Pain was sothing he could control.

And he was about to lose control completely.

***

Lilith had lost track of ti.

She didn’t know if she’d been sitting on the bed for thirty minutes or three hours. The morning light coming through the window had shifted position, moving slowly across the wall, but the changes were so gradual that she couldn’t mark the passage of hours. Everything felt numb. Everything felt distant. Like she was watching her own life through a pane of glass that separated her from reality.

Her hands were shaking.

She pressed them flat against her thighs, trying to force them to be still, but the trembling was involuntary. A physical manifestation of the panic spiraling through her mind. Because she still couldn’t rember. Still couldn’t fill in the blank space where yesterday’s afternoon should be.

What had she done?

The question kept cycling through her thoughts. What had she done to make them angry? What had she said? What had she broken?

She tried to stand up and her legs felt weak beneath her. Everything hurt. Every muscle in her body ached with a deep, bone-level exhaustion that went beyond physical pain. Her mind was exhausted too, trapped in a loop of fear and confusion and the desperate need to understand what had happened.

The knock ca soft against her door.

Lilith’s entire body went rigid.

Her heart started racing. Her breath beca shallow. She knew who it was before the door even opened. She could feel him through so connection she didn’t understand, golden eyes, feral intensity, the youngest brother with the voice that sounded almost like pain when he said her na.

Lucian.

The door opened and he stepped inside.

For a mont, neither of them moved. He stood in the doorway, taking in the sight of her, small and broken on the bed, her dark eyes wide with fear, her body tensed like she was preparing for a blow.

"Don’t be afraid," Lucian said quietly. His voice was gentle in a way that seed almost impossible for soone so large, so clearly predatory. "I’m not here to hurt you."

Lilith’s eyes filled with tears imdiately.

"Alpha Lucian," she whispered. "I’m sorry. I’m so sorry. I didn’t....I can’t...."

"Shh," he said softly. He moved into the room and closed the door behind him. "It’s okay. You’re safe."

He sat on the edge of her bed, leaving space between them. Respecting her fear even as his eyes tracked every movent she made.

"Do you rember what happened yesterday?" he asked.

Lilith shook her head. The tears started falling.

"I can’t rember anything after your room," she whispered. "Everything after that is just... gone. And I’m afraid. I’m so afraid that I did sothing wrong. That I said sothing. That you’re going to punish ."

Lucian’s expression shifted. Sothing flickered across his face....pain, maybe. Or recognition of what his brothers had done.

He reached out slowly, giving her ti to pull away if she wanted to. But she didn’t. She just sat there, trembling, as his hand ca up and cupped her cheek. His thumb brushed away one of her tears.

"You didn’t do anything wrong," he said quietly. His golden eyes were intense but not cruel. Just honest. "Your body was overwheld. Your mind protected you. It disconnected you so you wouldn’t have to feel everything at once. That’s not wrong. That’s survival."

Lilith’s breath hitched.

"But what if..."

"There’s no ’but what if,’" Lucian said. His hand moved to her hair, stroking it gently. "We would never punish you for that. Never. Do you understand ?"

She nodded, though the fear didn’t completely leave her eyes.

Lucian shifted his weight on the bed and pulled her toward him. She resisted for only a mont before collapsing against his chest. Her arms wrapped around his waist. Her face pressed against his shirt. And she began to cry, not the quiet tears from before, but deep, wrenching sobs that ca from sowhere primal inside her.

Lucian held her.

His arms wrapped around her back, supporting her weight. One hand stroked her hair. The other rubbed gentle circles on her back. He didn’t speak. He just held her while her body purged itself of the terror and confusion and trauma that had been building since she’d woken up.

"You’re safe," he whispered into her hair. "I’m here. You’re safe. You’re going to be okay."

She cried harder at his words, as if giving voice to her fear had sohow made the safety real. As if being held by him made it possible to believe that maybe, just maybe, everything would be okay.

Minutes passed.

Lucian’s wolf....Zev, was calm for the first ti since the day before. Not satisfied, not content, but calm. Peaceful even. Because she was in his arms. Because she was safe. Because this was exactly where she was supposed to be.

The door opened without a knock.

Lucian looked up, his expression hardening for just a mont. But he didn’t pull away from Lilith. His arms remained around her. His hand continued stroking her hair.
