Now reading: Chapter 39: Eikichi and the Threshold from Shadow Contract, a Romance novel by YSiGn優瑟夫.

The garage was cold. The concrete floor was stained with oil and old rubber. The air slled of gasoline and damp tal. Dante stood under the hood of the van. His hands were deep in the engine block. He was checking the fuel lines. Adjusting the pressure. The lights above humd. They flickered slightly. A loose wire.

He did not look up when the door opened. He did not need to. He knew the footsteps. Heavy. Deliberate. Silent. Eikichi walked into the room. He stopped five ters away. He crossed his arms. He wore his tactical vest. The plates clicked softly. He did not speak. He waited.

Dante tightened a bolt. He wiped his hands on a rag. He closed the hood. The tal slamd shut. He turned to face Eikichi. "You are blocking the exit," Dante said.

Eikichi did not move. His face was scarred. His eyes were dark. He was the shortest mber of the crew. But he felt like the largest. "We move in one hour," Eikichi said. His voice was gravel. Low. Rough.

"I know," Dante said.

"Gear is checked. Routes are set. Comms are encrypted."

"Good."

Eikichi took a step forward. The light caught the edge of his jaw. "There is one variable," Eikichi said. Dante leaned against the van. He crossed his ankles. He waited. "Sophie." The na hung in the cold air. It did not fade.

(Kairo): "He is assessing risk. Tactical evaluation."

(Mūn): "He is assessing loyalty. Emotional evaluation."

(Dante): "Silence."

Dante looked at Eikichi. "She is cleared for the operation."

"I know," Eikichi said. "Lisa approved the access. Isaac approved the data."

"But." Eikichi shifted his weight. He looked at the floor. Then back at Dante. "She is a liability."

Dante did not flinch. He did not argue. He did not reach for a weapon. "In what way," Dante asked.

"Not because she is weak," Eikichi said. "She is not weak. She is trained. She is capable." Eikichi took another step. He was close now. Close enough to strike. Close enough to talk. "Because of you."

Dante’s eyes narrowed. The turquoise iris glowed faintly in the dim light. "Explain," Dante said.

"When she is safe, you are precise," Eikichi said. "When she is threatened, you are unpredictable." Eikichi pointed at Dante’s chest. "Your calculation fails. Your logic breaks. You prioritize her safety over the mission success."

Dante remained silent. He did not deny it.

(Kairo): "He is correct. Data supports the claim."

(Mūn): "He sees the threshold. The point where you break."

(Dante): "I know."

"In a standard operation," Eikichi continued. "This is acceptable. In this operation... it is fatal." Eikichi lowered his hand. He tucked it into his vest. "Edward knows this. He will use it. He will put her in danger to make you make a mistake."

"I know," Dante said.

"Then why do you keep her in the circle."

Dante pushed off the van. He stood straight. He was taller than Eikichi. He looked down at him. "Because she is not just a variable," Dante said. "She is the objective."

Eikichi’s eyes narrowed. "The objective is Ogata. The objective is the truth."

"No," Dante said. "The objective is her survival."

The garage went silent. The hum of the lights seed louder. The cold air settled around them. Eikichi studied Dante’s face. He looked for hesitation. He looked for doubt. He found none.

"You are admitting a tactical flaw," Eikichi said.

"Yes."

"And you have no intention of correcting it."

"No."

Eikichi was silent for a long ti. He breathed slowly. In. Out. He was the guardian of the team. He was the line of defense. His job was to minimize risk. To protect the unit. And Dante was choosing to increase the risk.

"Isaac will not like this," Eikichi said.

"Isaac plans for variables," Dante said. "He will adjust."

"Kisuke will joke," Eikichi said. "But he will watch her back."

"Yes."

"And ." Eikichi stepped back. He moved away from the van. He moved toward the exit. "I will not adjust," Eikichi said.

Dante watched him. "What."

"If you prioritize her over the mission," Eikichi said. "Then I will prioritize the mission over you."

The words were cold. Hard. Final. Dante did not move. He did not blink.

(Kairo): "Threat detected. Internal conflict."

(Mūn): "No. It is not a threat. It is a safeguard."

(Dante): "I know."

"If I have to choose," Eikichi said. "I will extract her. Even if I have to leave you behind."

Dante nodded. Once. "Understood."

Eikichi looked at him. He searched for anger. He found acceptance. "You are making this difficult," Eikichi said.

"I am making it honest," Dante said.

Eikichi turned toward the door. He placed his hand on the handle. He stopped. "She is worth the risk," Eikichi said. It was not a question. It was a statent.

Dante looked at his hands. They were stained with oil. They were steady. "Yes," Dante said.

Eikichi opened the door. The light from the hallway spilled in. It cut across the dark garage. "Then do not make regret it," Eikichi said. He stepped out. He closed the door behind them. The click was soft. Final.

Dante was alone. The garage was quiet. The van sat in the center. It was ready. He walked to the workbench. He picked up his weapon. He checked the magazine. He slid it into the holster. He secured the strap.

(Kairo): "He will hold you to that."

(Dante): "I expect him to."

(Mūn): "If you fail... he will save her."

(Dante): "Then I will not fail."

Dante walked to the window. He looked out at the city. The sky was gray. The clouds were heavy. Rain was coming. He thought about Sophie. He thought about the transport route. He thought about the key. He thought about the threshold.

Eikichi was right. When Sophie was in danger, Dante beca unpredictable. He beca dangerous. He beca sothing else. Sothing that did not care about the mission. Sothing that did not care about the cost. Sothing that would burn the world to keep her safe.

(Kairo): "That is inefficient."

(Dante): "That is necessary."

Dante turned away from the window. He walked toward the door. He would not resolve the problem. He would not fix the flaw. He would weaponize it. Edward wanted to use Sophie against him. Let him try. Dante would show him what happened when the threshold was crossed.

He opened the door. He stepped into the hallway. The crew was waiting. The engines were running. Sophie was standing by the van. She was checking her gear. She looked up when he approached.

"Ready," she said.

"Yes," Dante said.

He got into the vehicle. He sat in the front seat. Eikichi was in the back. He was cleaning his weapon. He did not look up. But Dante knew. Eikichi was ready too. Ready to save her. Even if it ant leaving Dante behind.

Dante started the engine. The van roared to life. He put it in gear. He drove out of the garage. Into the rain. Into the night. Into the fire.
