The host was a nationally known celebrity host from M Country, specially invited by the Lincoln Art Center. They had a great understanding of the audience’s mindset, and asked, "May I ask who your friend is? Did she e to the event today?"
"Yes, I’m here for her."
"I really envy this friend." The host was genuinely envious, and it wasn’t just them—the audience present was filled with envy too.
Sheng Ning sat below, her face full of smiles. She mouthed the words, "Long time no see."
"Long time no see," Liu Yilan said into the microphone, so those four Chinese characters resonated throughout the venue.
"Now, let’s give our friend a spotlight," the host shouted excitedly.
The lighting technician, following Liu Yilan’s gaze, precisely pinpointed Sheng Ning sitting in the VIP section, and as the bright white light shone on her face, the entire venue was focused on her.
As the two locked eyes, the whole world seemed to revolve around them, with all attention centered on them.
Gu Yunbo stared blankly at the scene before her, feeling a mix of envy, regret, and an unfamiliar sense of remorse. In the first half of her life, she had never had friends. She walked through the darkness as an avenger, thinking she didn’t need friends. However, this moment made her realize that perhaps she had been wrong.
And she was very wrong indeed.
To have a friend like that, where words aren’t necessary, just a simple glance can convey understanding. A message that prompts one to travel miles for the other.
Just for a moment like this.
She was very envious, for she once had the chance. The man who loved her, and the home she had personally destroyed...
Su Hai gave Gu Yunbo a thoughtful glance and casually asked, "What? Feeling envious?"
"What’s it to you?" The two weren’t particularly close in private, maintaining civility on Sheng Ning’s behalf. Gu Yunbo bore grudges and always sought revenge. Before going abroad, she had been a pitiful soul dependent on others, though beneath it, she was black-hearted and ruthless.
Su Hai was probably the first to see through her disguise, and also the first to threaten her. So, every time Gu Yunbo saw Su Hai, she recalled his threat.
"Do you regret it?"
"Why ask? Want to see me make a fool of myself? What good is it if I regret or not?"
"You regret it?" Su Hai’s eyes showed a hint of surprise.
"Impossible. In Gu Yunbo’s dictionary, there’s no such thing as regret," she said sharply, her eyes filled with stubborn resilience.
Su Hai’s eyes darkened slightly, and the long-standing confusion in his heart was finally resolved. He could never understand why his brilliant nephew fancied such a black-hearted and vicious woman.
It turns out she did have her shining moments.
"What are you looking at? Dead fox," Gu Yunbo grumbled, turning her focus back to the stage. The performance had begun, and even someone as musically indifferent as her was moved by the beautiful melodies.
"If you had a chance to start over, would you still do the things you did before?" Just as Gu Yunbo was immersed in the music, Su Hai, that dead fox, spoke again.
Indeed, foxes lack any appreciation ability.
Gu Yunbo paused, this time speaking in a subdued tone rather than snapping, "Unfortunately, there’s no if, nor any chance to start over."
