An hour later, the two sisters left their rental ho to discover the police had already arrived. ng Xiuying, calm and composed, went up to them. The police only asked a few basic questions before taking the family of three away. Before leaving, ng Xiuying gave all the baby items, including the stroller and the milk powder, to Gong Mingxia, asking her to help take care of the child for a while.
Gong Mingxia readily agreed. By the ti ng Xiuying returned, it was already two in the morning. She was brought back by the police. As for the Liu Family, they had been detained on suspicion of human trafficking.
Not wanting to disturb her rest, ng Xiuying didn’t say anything upon her return, and Gong Mingxia didn’t ask. Gong Mingxia slept on the sofa and let ng Xiuying and the children sleep in the bed.
After a blurry sleep, Gong Mingxia woke up at six in the morning and rode her bike to the market. Although her rest had been interrupted the day before, she couldn’t skip her market stall. Missing even a single day could an losing hundreds of yuan in profits, and she couldn’t afford that delay.
When Gong Mingxia got up, ng Xiuying also woke and offered to help, but Gong Mingxia refused.
"No need, no need, you just take good care of the children, that’s all. Are you going to the police station today?"
"Mm, I have to go again at eight because I insisted on filing a report, and they’ve already opened a case. Since the Liu Family started this with malice, they can’t bla for being heartless. Besides, we’re married and I’m entitled to half of his house. I might not be able to handle this lawsuit alone, so I’ve thought it over. I’m going to call my parents today, ask them to co and help . But we might have to impose on you for another two or three days, sister. Once my parents arrive, we’ll stay in a hostel."
Gong Mingxia waved her hand nonchalantly, "In a foreign place, who doesn’t have a bit of trouble, eh? Just stay as you please, it’s no big deal."
Even so, Gong Mingxia felt it was necessary to be cautious; she carried her money with her, and her savings were all in the bank. There wasn’t much of value at ho, except for her beloved daughter, who she was about to take to kindergarten.
When Gong Mingxia returned from the market, ng Xiuying had already prepared breakfast, complete with soup and pancakes; it was quite a spread.
Aunt Wang knew they had extra guests, so she wasn’t likely to co over and bother them. Even so, Gong Mingxia had bought so buns. Since breakfast was plentiful, she sent so of both the buns and pancakes next door. Aunt Wang then brought a big bowl of wontons back for them, so everyone had a very hearty breakfast.
After breakfast, it was already half past seven. Gong Mingxia went to drop Xiao Xiao off at kindergarten, and ng Xiuying joined her on the way to the police station. Worried she might not have money, Gong Mingxia gave her one hundred yuan in change, which moved ng Xiuying almost to the point of kneeling in gratitude. Even at the end of the 1990s, one hundred yuan was a considerable amount. How could ng Xiuying not be moved by such a grand gesture?
When she returned ho, Gong Mingxia didn’t have ti to rest before she started cooking non-stop until eleven o’clock, when she hurriedly rode her tricycle to snack street.
The busy day continued. By one in the afternoon, Gong Mingxia’s food was nearly sold out. ng Xiuying ca looking for her, pushing the children in the stroller. Seeing the rare smile on her face, Gong Mingxia guessed, "Are your parents coming?"
ng Xiuying looked up, surprised, "Sister, how did you guess?"
Gong Mingxia laughed, "It’s all written on your face, isn’t it? Now you can feel relieved, can’t you?"
