"This is ironic," the Old Lady said with a self-deprecating laugh, which made Gong Mingxia’s heart ache unbearably. She instinctively reached out her arms to embrace her.

"Godmother, they really work so hard. All those kids, the youngest is rely nineteen, joined the military right after high school. Even when they’re exhausted and suffer from heat stroke, not a word of complaint cos out of them. This month, I’ve seen sacrifice, I’ve seen sickness, and I’ve seen perseverance. They, they have it so tough."

How well did the Old Lady understand their hardships, their sacrifices for the greater good over their own families?

But as a mother, who doesn’t wish her son to be both a man of stature, standing tall and strong, and the mainstay of their household?

Yet now, it was as if her own son was born for the nation; he spent his years studying, and after graduation, he served the state. She, as a mother, ended up feeling like a transient figure in his life, let alone her daughter-in-law and grandson. How difficult it was for the wife to endure those many years, only to leave helplessly in the end. In truth, she deeply understood her struggles.

"When Yangyang grows up, no matter what, I won’t let him enlist."

Yangyang is already in his first year of high school, a fourteen or fifteen-year-old, a whole decade older than their Xiao Xiao. As for which career he will choose in the future, it might not be within the Old Lady’s power to control. She could tell the boy was very independent, certainly not one to let others ddle in his life.

After leaving the godmother’s house, mother and daughter returned ho. After freshening up, Gong Mingxia lay in bed with her daughter, holding a book, telling her stories.

Ever since they moved into their new ho, Xiao Xiao had her own room. Gong Mingxia had hung beautiful curtains for her, bought a desk, and the wardrobe had been there from the beginning. Since it was a spacious two-bedroom apartnt, there was also room for a piano and computer, though these would only beco a reality in a few years.

Now Xiao Xiao’s room bore no traces of a study, still the room of a little girl. Fearing her daughter might be scared at night, she even bought two large dolls to place on her bed to keep her company. Thankfully, Xiao Xiao had adapted to every environnt from a young age, and she wasn’t afraid at all after they started sleeping in separate beds. Gong Mingxia found herself regarding her daughter with newfound respect!

After coaxing her daughter to sleep, Gong Mingxia applied her water and milk skincare set. A woman’s beauty routine is always a form of self-love, and now that she had the ans, she naturally would not neglect herself. So on regular days, she and her daughter were always dressed up nicely, even if it was just to set up a street stall, never looking sloppy.

The next day, in the afternoon when she was about to close her stall, two middle-aged n ca up to order a boxed al each and began to chat whilst eating.

Gong Mingxia hadn’t intended to eavesdrop, but how could she help it when they spoke so loudly? After one of them left, the other, while cursing under his breath and eating his al with discomfort, caused Gong Mingxia to hesitate for a mont before she couldn’t hold back.

"Big brother, are you in the printing business? What do you print?"

"Yeah, our factory mainly prints stationery items, like notebooks, draft paper, student workbooks,"

"I heard your conversation just now; did you encounter so difficulty?"

At that, the middle-aged man’s brows furrowed; clearly, he wasn’t inclined to share more. Gong Mingxia gave a gentle smile.

"Don’t mind , big brother, I don’t an any harm. I just overheard the two of you having a dispute, is it because the factory’s sales ran into so trouble?"

The middle-aged man, likely really needing to vent, saw Gong Mingxia’s conversational approach and let out a heavy sigh.
