Adrian’s eyes opened to dawn light filtering through skeletal tree branches.

Cold.

Wet.

Pain radiating through every muscle in his body like he’d been beaten with iron rods.

He tried to move and imdiately regretted it... his cultivation base scread in protest, still raw from whatever force had crushed him into submission last night.

Last night.

The mories crashed over him with devastating clarity.

Catherine. On her knees. That man’s...

Adrian’s hands clenched in the mud beneath him, fingers digging into cold earth as rage flooded his system so completely that his vision blurred at the edges.

He forced himself upright, body protesting every movent, and finally registered his surroundings.

The main gates of Thornhaven Manor.

Closed. Locked. Utterly indifferent to his presence.

He was lying in the mud just outside the property line, his expensive suit ruined, his pride shattered, his entire existence reduced to trash thrown out with the morning garbage.

They dumped here.

Like refuse.

Like I was nothing.

The sun was barely cresting the horizon... early morning, maybe five or six at most.

’Which ant...’ Adrian’s jaw tightened with fresh humiliation.

’I’ve been lying here all night. Unconscious in the mud while servants probably stepped over on their way to work. While Catherine and that... that TOY... were probably...’

He couldn’t finish the thought. Didn’t want to imagine what they’d done after he’d been neutralized and discarded.

His cultivation base stirred weakly, trying to circulate energy through pathways still bruised from whatever had pinned him in place.

Peak Enhanced.

He was Peak Enhanced... supposedly less than a year from Apex breakthrough, the prodigy everyone praised, the heir who would elevate the Blackwell na.

And he’d been swatted aside like an insect.

Anger burned inside him like acid in his veins.

He had never been humiliated like this. Never.

Not in training. Not in cultivation breakthroughs. Not in political maneuvering.

Never.

His cultivation base surged instinctively, power flooding his limbs as the imdiate, primal urge took over... go back inside, tear them both apart, make them understand what happens when you humiliate a Blackwell heir.

Adrian’s body tensed, ready to launch himself at the manor gates.

Then the scene flashed through his mind.

Pressure.

Crushing, absolute, inescapable pressure slamming down on him like the weight of mountains.

His cultivation base seized. His body froze mid-lunge. His Peak Enhanced power... everything he’d worked for, everything he’d cultivated, everything that made him superior... rendered completely, utterly useless.

He couldn’t move his hand. Couldn’t turn his head. Couldn’t even breathe properly.

Just... pinned.

Like an insect under glass.

Adrian shivered despite himself, the mory of that helplessness more terrifying than any physical pain.

The urge to attack died instantly, replaced by cold, rational fear.

’Who?’

The question burned hotter than his rage.

’Who bound ? Who has that kind of power?’

Not Catherine. She was Enhanced, yes, but nowhere near the level required to suppress a Peak Enhanced cultivator so completely.

Not that gigolo. Adrian had scanned him yesterday... no cultivation signature, no realm advancent, nothing that suggested he could defend himself let alone dominate soone of Adrian’s caliber.

Soone else, hiding in the shadows.

Soone powerful enough to crush without breaking a sweat.

Adrian’s mind raced through possibilities, each one more disturbing than the last.

Apex Realm.

Has to be.

No one below Apex could suppress that thoroughly.

The realization should have terrified him.

But instead...

Adrian’s lips curved into sothing that wasn’t quite a smile.

Information.

This is information Father doesn’t have.

Sothing valuable. Sothing that explains my failure.

His hands pushed against the mud, leveraging himself fully upright despite his body’s protests.

’I can’t tell Father I failed because I’m weak.

Can’t admit I spent twelve months trying to seduce Catherine and got nothing. Can’t confess she rejected and I attacked her out of desperation.’

But if he reported that Catherine had secret Apex-level protection? That changed everything.

That makes my failure tactical rather than personal.

That makes it intelligence gathering rather than defeat.

He turned to face Thornhaven Manor properly, staring at the elegant architecture that had been his ho for twelve months.

Twelve months of devotion.

Twelve months of positioning himself perfectly.

Twelve months wasted on a woman who’d chosen soone else.

’I’m leaving.’ The decision crystallized with cold clarity. ’But I’ll co back.’

Stronger. Prepared.

’And when I do...’

His imagination supplied scenarios with vicious detail.

Her perfect composure shattered into pieces he could grind under his heel.

’You won’t escape my grasp next ti.

And when I have you...’

His smile widened, taking on edges that had nothing to do with love and everything to do with revenge.

’You’ll beg for hell.’

Adrian forced himself to turn away from the manor, each step pulling him further from the site of his greatest humiliation.

His mind was already compartntalizing, already reframing defeat as temporary setback rather than permanent loss.

But even as the strategic thoughts ford, another image surfaced.

Alex.

That fucking gigolo standing over Catherine while she...

Adrian’s cultivation base cracked, power surging outward in waves that made the air shimr.

’You.’

The rage focusing on Alex was different. Simpler. Purer.

Catherine was untouchable now... protected by power Adrian couldn’t challenge, political consequences too severe to risk.

But Alex?

Just a toy. No family. No protection. Nobody who would care if he disappeared.

Adrian’s hands flexed.

’But you? You’re fair ga.’

His Enhanced perception reached outward, scanning Thornhaven’s grounds.

There.

Victoria’s sedan, still parked where it had been yesterday.

’Perfect. You’re still here.’

Relief hit sharp and vindicating.

Adrian’s mind calculated routes with cold precision.

Victoria will drive him ho. Sa route they ca.

Empty warehouses. No witnesses.

The odds were insultingly in his favor.

’I’ll be waiting.’

***

Adrian stood in the middle of the empty road, arms crossed, breathing steady.

The industrial district stretched around him... abandoned warehouses, cracked pavent, silence broken only by distant wind through broken windows.

Perfect.

No witnesses. No caras. No one to interfere.

He’d been waiting for almost an hour now, cultivation base fully circulated, body recovered from last night’s suppression.

Peak Enhanced power humd beneath his skin, eager for release.

Then he felt it.

A vehicle approaching. Fast.

His Enhanced perception locked onto the signature imdiately... Victoria’s luxury sedan, moving through the district exactly as he’d predicted.

Adrian’s lips curved.

Right on schedule.

The car appeared around the corner two blocks away, sunlight glinting off tinted windows.

He could sense Victoria inside, her newly-awakened Peak Mortal energy signature bright and untested.

And the other presence...

Adrian’s jaw tightened.

Alex. That fucking gigolo. Right there.

The car was doing seventy, maybe eighty. Victoria’s enhanced perception making her overconfident on the empty road.

Adrian waited until they were fifty yards away.

Then he moved.

His body launched forward with Peak Enhanced speed, covering fifteen feet in a single bound, landing directly in the center of the road with perfect precision.

Positioning himself as an unmovable obstacle.

Arms still crossed. Posture utterly calm.

***

Inside the car, Victoria’s enhanced perception caught the movent instantly.

One second the road was empty.

The next, a figure stood dead center, fifty feet ahead.

"Shit!"

Her foot slamd the brake pedal.

Tires scread against asphalt, the car’s montum fighting her suddenly as physics warred with Enhanced reflex.

Victoria’s hands gripped the wheel with white-knuckled force, her newly-broken-through cultivation base flooding her system with adrenaline and strength she barely knew how to control.

The car fishtailed slightly... too much brake pressure, overcorrection... then stabilized as her enhanced perception calculated angles and force in microseconds.

Thirty feet.

Twenty.

Ten.

The vehicle stopped six feet from Adrian’s position, engine still running, brake lights glowing red.

Victoria’s chest heaved, heart pounding from the sudden stop.

Her enhanced senses swept over the figure in front of them, recognition hitting like ice water.

"Alex," she said quietly, hands still death-gripping the wheel. "That’s..."

"I know," Alex said from the passenger seat, his voice utterly calm.

Alex stared through the windshield at the figure blocking their path.

Adrian stood perfectly still, arms crossed, expression carved from ice.

Fifty feet of empty road between them.

Alex’s hand moved to the door handle.

"Alex, wait..." Victoria’s voice carried warning, her enhanced perception screaming danger.

He turned to look at her, eting her eyes with calm that shouldn’t exist in this situation.

Sothing in his gaze... steady, certain, absolutely unbothered... made her words die in her throat.

"It’s fine," Alex said quietly.

Then he opened the door and stepped out.

---

The industrial district air was cold against his skin as Alex walked forward, closing the distance between himself and Adrian with asured steps.

No hesitation. No fear. Just calm forward montum.

"Tsk, tsk, tsk."

The sound was theatrical, performative.

Alex head tilted slightly, examining adrian like sothing amusing he’d found on his shoe.

"So you’re here to commit suicide? Throwing yourself in front of my path?" His smile widened. "Or maybe you enjoyed last night’s show so much you ca back for an encore?"

He stopped ten feet away, expression perfectly neutral.

"You think last night ant sothing?" Adrian’s voice was cold steel. "You think she loves you... that you’ve won because of one night?"

"Don’t delude yourself into thinking you’re anything more than that. A gigolo. Hired entertainnt. She was using you to vent her anger at , nothing else."

"Is that what you tell yourself?" Alex asked, still utterly calm.

"It’s the truth." Adrian’s voice hardened.

He laughed... bitter, sharp.

"You’re a distraction. Temporary relief. The mont you’re gone, she’ll forget you existed."

Alex’s expression didn’t change.

"You really believe that."

"I know it." Adrian stepped forward, closing distance. "Because at the end of the day, Catherine Blackwood needs real power. Real alliance. Real partnership."

His smile beca predatory.

"And that ans she’ll co to . Eventually. When she’s done playing gas and ready to face political reality, she’ll co begging."

Alex’s lips curved into a smile of his own.

Not anger. Not embarrassnt.

Pure, mocking amusent.

"Begging?" Alex repeated, voice light and conversational. "Well, I have to admit... watching you stand there helpless while I fucked Catherine’s throat was incredibly satisfying."

He paused, letting that sink in.

"Though I’m not sure who enjoyed it more... , or her."

Adrian’s smile cracked.

"You bastard... "

He lunged forward, cultivation base flaring, fist drawn back with Peak Enhanced power.

"Relax."

Alex’s voice cut through the air like a blade.

A single word. Casual. Almost bored.

Adrian froze mid-step.

"Don’t play innocent," Alex continued, his voice dripping contempt as he walked casually closer to Adrian’s frozen form.

"I noticed you enjoyed the show very much."

He stopped three feet away, studying Adrian’s immobilized face with clinical interest.

"The way you couldn’t look away. The way you kept watching even when it destroyed you. The way your cultivation base cracked from rage and humiliation but you still couldn’t stop staring."

"I’LL KILL YOU!"

The words ripped from Adrian’s throat... raw, vicious, and barely human.

He surged forward, rage compressing into a single, devastating punch... but Alex stopped it.

The backlash thundered outward, shoving Alex back several steps... yet Adrian’s bones scread, the pain blooming instantly as he realized he’d accomplished nothing.
