Alex stepped out of Villa into the cool afternoon air, the door closing softly behind him with a satisfying click.

The sun had climbed higher while he’d been inside, painting the estate grounds in brilliant gold. The gravel crunched beneath his feet as he walked toward his car, mind still processing the conversation he’d just had with Viktor.

Alex allowed himself a satisfied smile.

The conversation with Viktor after the others had left had been... productive.

They’d discussed the future... not in vague, aspirational terms, but with tactical precision. What ca next. How to position themselves. What resources would be needed. What threats to anticipate.

Viktor’s military mind had proven invaluable, breaking down Alex’s broader vision into actionable steps, identifying weaknesses in current plans, suggesting alternatives that Alex’s inexperience had overlooked.

Alex had asked Viktor to find him n who could be trusted.

"Loyalty is the most basic parater," Alex had said. "Talented or not, I’ll take care of developing their abilities. But I need people who won’t betray us the mont pressure is applied."

Viktor had nodded imdiately, understanding the wisdom in that approach.

"I’ll look for them," Viktor had promised.

"People with reason to stay loyal. n who’ve been betrayed by the system, who have nowhere else to go, who understand what genuine investnt looks like."

It was the sa principle Alex had been applying... invest in loyalty first, build capability second.

Alex had nodded, satisfied.

But the best news... the thing that made Alex’s investnt feel not just worthwhile but exponentially profitable... had co near the end of their conversation.

Victor had dropped the news that had made Alex’s entire morning feel like a victory lap.

"I’m about to break through," Viktor had said, sothing almost giddy beneath his usual tactical composure. "To the next stage. Middle Apex Realm."

Alex had blinked, processing that statent.

Viktor had only been Early Apex for what... a few weeks at most? And he was already approaching the next breakthrough?

"The Elixir of Absolute Restoration," Viktor had continued, shaking his head with genuine wonder. "Whatever it did to my body... it’s not just that it healed or pushed to Apex. It’s like it removed invisible weights I didn’t know I was carrying."

He’d stood, pacing to the window, his movents carrying that Enhanced grace that ca with Apex cultivation.

"My cultivation speed has skyrocketed. Progress that should take months is happening in weeks. Barriers that should require years of preparation feel... thin. Breakable."

He’d turned back to Alex, eyes bright.

"I’ve never advanced this fast. Not in my entire life. Not even when I was young and House Blackthorne was giving their best resources."

The satisfaction that had settled in Alex’s chest at those words was profound.

Ten thousand CP.

That’s what the Elixir of Absolute Restoration had cost him... full price, no discounts available at the ti.

And it was giving returns that went far beyond just saving Viktor’s life or pushing him to Apex.

It had fundantally transford his cultivation potential. Turned him into soone capable of advancing at speeds that would make Sacred House heirs scared.

’This,’ Alex thought as he reached his car, ’is what real investnt looks like.’

Not just imdiate results, but compounding returns that kept delivering value long after the initial purchase.

Viktor would hit Middle Apex soon. Then Late Apex. Then Peak Apex.

And when he did, Alex would have an asset more valuable than almost anything money could buy... an Apex practitioner at the absolute pinnacle of the realm, loyal beyond question, leading a team of equally devoted operatives.

Alex slid into the driver’s seat, started the engine, and pulled out of the circular driveway.

The estate shrank in his rearview mirror... Viktor’s team already deep in cultivation, working toward the Peak Enhanced breakthrough that would change everything.

One month.

In one month, he’d have five Peak Enhanced practitioners and one Apex commander ready to move.

And after that, when he had the resources, he’d push them all to Apex Realm... just like their commander.

Five Apex practitioners, absolutely loyal.

The pieces were falling into place.

***

Alex accelerated smoothly onto the highway, the city skyline rising in the distance.

His mind shifted away from Viktor’s team, away from cultivation breakthroughs and strategic investnts, toward sothing more personal.

Nina.

It had been days since he’d last seen her. Days since he’d sat by her hospital bed, watching monitors track her vital signs, holding her small hand while she slept.

The treatnt was working... he knew that much from the updates Sarah sent. Nina’s condition had stabilized, the experintal protocol showing real results.

But he hadn’t gone back.

Hadn’t visited Mike, Sarah, or Danny either.

The uncomfortable weight settled in his chest every ti he thought about walking through that hospital door again.

Linda.

Alex’s jaw tightened slightly, his hands gripping the steering wheel a fraction harder.

He’d been avoiding it... avoiding her... ever since that mont.

That charged, impossible mont when boundaries had blurred. He always felt uncomfortable rembering them.

And yet... avoidance wasn’t a solution. It was cowardice dressed up as consideration.

Nina needed him. The family needed him. And he couldn’t keep hiding from uncomfortable feelings like so teenager afraid of awkward conversations.

’Maybe she’s forgotten,’ Alex thought, though he didn’t quite believe it. ’Maybe it was just a mont of vulnerability on her part. Gratitude mixed with exhaustion. Nothing more.*

He wanted to believe that.

Needed to believe that.

"Don’t worry," Lilith’s voice drifted through his thoughts, carrying uncharacteristic reassurance. "She’s brave. She can overco this."

Alex nodded slightly, accepting the explanation.

Linda was strong. She’d process what happened and move past it. They both would.

Alex exhaled slowly, making the decision.

He’d go see Nina today. Face whatever awkwardness ca with it. Be there for the family that had stood by him when everything fell apart.

And if Linda looked at him that way again...

He’d deal with it then.

His phone buzzed suddenly, the sharp vibration cutting through his thoughts.

Alex glanced down at the screen mounted on his dashboard.

Caller ID: Tisha

His expression shifted imdiately... tension replaced by warmth, the complicated thoughts about Linda fading as he accepted the call.

"Hey," he said, his voice carrying genuine pleasure. "I was just thinking about you."

Tisha’s response ca imdiately, her tone sharp but affectionate.

"Yeah, that’s why I have to call you every single day, right? Because you’re always ’just thinking about ’?"

Alex couldn’t help but smile at the familiar teasing. "You know I an it."

"Mhm. Sure." Her voice softened, the edge lting into sothing warr. "So... how’s everything going?"

"Good," Alex said, rging smoothly into traffic. "Really good, actually. Things are falling into place."

"That’s wonderfully vague," she said, amusent threading through her words. "But I’ll allow it."

A pause, comfortable and intimate.

Then Tisha’s voice dropped lower, taking on that quality that always made Alex’s pulse quicken... smooth, deliberate, inviting.

"You know... I was thinking..." she began, drawing out the words. "You should co over tonight."

Alex’s eyebrow rose, a smile tugging at his lips. "Oh? And what brought this on, Professor Wells?"

"I just think..." her voice lowered further, practically purring, "...that we need so one-on-one ti. Private. Just you and . No distractions."

A deliberate pause.

"I have so many things I want to go over with you. In very thorough detail."

Alex let out a shocked laugh. "Professor Wells, are you trying to seduce , an honest student?"

"Maybe," she replied, completely shaless.

"I’m scandalized," Alex said, mock horror in his voice. "A respected professor, calling up one of her students, using that voice, inviting him to her ho for ’private’ sessions? What would the administration say?"

"They’d probably want a demonstration," Tisha shot back without missing a beat.

Alex grinned. "You’re terrible."

"I’m practical," she corrected. "And speaking of practical... I was obviously talking about extra classes, Mr. Hale."

"Extra classes," Alex repeated flatly.

"Yes. Extra classes." Her tone shifted to exaggerated innocence. "Your exams are in two weeks, and you’ve been skipping college like it’s your personal hobby. I’m simply offering academic support. As a concerned educator."

"Academic support."

"Exactly. What did you think I ant?"

Alex laughed outright. "You’re really going to play it like that?"

"I have no idea what you’re implying," Tisha said primly, though he could hear her smile. "I made a perfectly professional offer to help a struggling student, and you imdiately jumped to inappropriate conclusions."

"Struggling student?" Alex protested. "I’m not struggling."

"You’re skipping. That’s pre-struggling."

"That’s not a thing."

"It is now. I just made it up." Her laughter broke through, warm and genuine. "But seriously, Alex... you do need to show up next week. Your attendance is starting to look suspicious."

"I know," Alex admitted. "I’ll be there. Promise."

"Good." A pause, then her voice dropped again... not seductive this ti, but sincere. "I do miss you though. Actually miss you. Not just... the fun parts. All of it."

The warmth in Alex’s chest intensified.

"I miss you too," he said quietly. "More than I probably should."

"Good," she said softly. "Then don’t make wait too long."

"I won’t."
