Outside Tisha’s Office

Mike sprawled in one of the waiting area chairs, leg bouncing with restless energy. Danny paced near the window, occasionally glancing at Tisha’s closed office door with growing irritation.

"This is insane" Danny muttered, checking his watch. "We’ve been sitting here for twenty minutes while he’s in there having so heart-to-heart."

Mike chuckled. "You know Alex. Even in the middle of a crisis, he’s got to handle everything personally."

"The situation’s downright grim, and he’s busy with his girl..." Danny stopped, glanced around quickly, then corrected, "...professor." He let out a relieved breath when no one seed to hear.

Mike burst out laughing at danny’s slip.

Danny groaned. "This guy can’t be serious in any situation."

"Hey, at least one of us is getting emotional support. We’re just the moral support squad."

Mike said smirking at him.

The door finally opened, and Alex appeared, looking slightly embarrassed.

"Sorry guys, co on in."

Tisha looked up as the three stepped in, her professional composure back in place, but a faint blush betrayed her embarrassnt.

"Danny, Mike," she asked with genuine concern, "how are you holding up? I know this whole thing’s been rough on you."

"We’re managing," Mike said, dropping into a chair. "More worried about Alex than ourselves."

"And Nina," Tisha added, turning to Danny. "How’s she doing?"

Danny’s shoulders eased just a little. "Much better, thankfully."

Tisha leaned forward, voice steady but reassuring. "Good. And listen... don’t worry too much about this inquiry. We’ve got what we need to clear it all up."

Mike’s shoulders eased a little, and Danny gave a small nod, the tension in his expression softening.

Tisha leaned back slightly, eyes serious. "Alex, before we head into the inquiry, you should et with Vice President Miranda. It’ll give you a clearer idea of what you’re walking into."

Alex nodded. "Right. That makes sense."

Mike and Danny exchanged a quick glance, relief flickering in their eyes... they knew this was the best move to stay ahead.

Vice President’s Office – Student Affairs

Miranda Whitman’s office was a balance of authority and approachability... bookshelves lined with legal texts and student affairs journals, a polished mahogany desk that spoke of quiet confidence.

Sunlight streaming through tall windows, casting warm light over the campus quad below. Small personal touches... frad photos, a few potted plants... hinted at soone who valued both professionalism and the people she served.

When Tisha knocked and entered with Alex, Miranda looked up from her computer with the kind of smile that suggested she’d been expecting them.

"Well, well," Miranda said, rising gracefully from her chair. "The famous Mr. Hale finally graces with a personal visit."

Alex felt his breath catch slightly. He’d seen Miranda from across various campus events, but up close.

She was captivating, not with the forced polish of soone trying too hard, but with the magnetic confidence of a woman who knew her own worth... and enjoyed the effect it had.

Her auburn hair was swept back in a way that revealed the graceful curve of her neck, strands occasionally falling loose, hinting at effortless charm. The tailored lines of her business suit hugged her in all the right places, suggesting strength and subtle allure.

And when she smiled, it was impossible to ignore the playful glint in her sharp green eyes, a spark that seed to draw attention without even trying.

"Dr. Whitman," Alex began formally, "I wanted to thank you for..."

"Oh, please," she interrupted with a laugh, gesturing for them to sit. "Call Miranda. And you’re really treating us like your personal cavalry, aren’t you?"

She settled back into her chair, but there was nothing defensive about her posture. If anything, she looked amused by the entire situation.

"Twice now, Tisha has co to with tales of my dear ex-husband attempting to railroad you through the disciplinary system." Miranda arched a brow, her lips curving with wry amusent.

"I’m starting to think you’re doing this on purpose... just to give opportunities to humiliate Pierce in public."

Tisha couldn’t suppress a smile. "Would that be such a bad thing?"

"Terrible," Miranda replied with mock seriousness. "I might start enjoying it too much."

Alex found himself relaxing despite the circumstances. There was sothing infectious about Miranda’s confidence, a sense that she genuinely enjoyed intellectual combat and wasn’t intimidated by institutional politics.

"I really do appreciate everything you’ve done," Alex said. "Both tis."

Miranda’s lips twitched into a sly grin. "Well, at least you’re one of the rare students who rembers who saved them from academic disaster. Most prefer to pretend it never happened."

"Hard to forget when soone saves your academic career," Alex replied.

Miranda leaned forward slightly, her playful air giving way to sothing more deliberate.

"The first ti, I understood... he was scrambling to protect Marcus, and even Sophia had her hands in it. But this ti..."

Her eyes narrowed, the edge in her voice unmistakable. "This ti feels less like protocol and more like a setup... personal, deliberate. A vendetta."

She tapped her pen against her desk thoughtfully. "But you’re just a scholarship student, right? No major family connections, no significant resources, no obvious reason why the Director of Blackwood University would develop such a fixation."

Alex felt Tisha tense slightly beside him, but Miranda’s tone wasn’t accusatory... it was genuinely curious, like a puzzle she was trying to solve.

"Unless, of course," Miranda continued with a slight smile, "there’s more to Alex Hale than ets the eye."

The comnt hung in the air, loaded with implications neither Alex nor Tisha were prepared to address directly.

"Speaking of Pierce," Miranda said, smoothly changing direction, "you should know what you’re walking into this afternoon. My ex-husband has been... different lately."

"Different how?" Tisha asked.

Miranda’s expression was thoughtful as she began. "More desperate. More willing to take risks that would have appalled him a year ago. Pierce used to be calculating but fundantally cautious."

Her tone grew serious. "Now he’s making moves that suggest he’s either very confident about sothing... or very afraid of sothing."

She stood and moved to the window, gazing out over the campus. "This inquiry today, for instance... the evidence against you is fabricated. Obviously so, to anyone willing to look closely."

She turned slightly, her voice sharpening. "Pierce knows I’ll see through it, knows I won’t let him get away with it. Yet he’s proceeding anyway."

"Why?" Alex asked.

Miranda turned back to face them, her expression thoughtful. "That’s the question, isn’t it? Either he’s lost his mind, which I doubt, or he’s serving interests that make the risk worthwhile."

She returned to her desk, her professional deanor reasserting itself. "Regardless of his motivations, you have nothing to worry about in today’s hearing. The evidence is overwhelmingly in your favor, and I won’t let Pierce turn it into a kangaroo court."

"But?" Tisha prompted, sensing there was more.

"But be prepared for him to try sothing desperate. Cornered animals are dangerous, and I have the distinct feeling Pierce is feeling very cornered these days."

Miranda’s smile returned, edged with steel. "Fortunately for you, I’ve been dealing with Pierce’s brand of manipulation for years. He thinks he’s playing chess... he forgets I’ve always seen the whole board."

She walked around her desk to stand closer to Alex, studying his face with obvious interest. "You know, for soone who’s supposedly just an ordinary student, you have very interesting enemies, Mr. Hale."

Alex t her gaze steadily. "I’ve been wondering about that myself lately."

"I’m sure you have," Miranda replied with a knowing smile. "Well, whatever secrets you’re carrying, they’re safe with ."

"Today," She continued. "My only concern is ensuring Pierce doesn’t abuse his authority to settle whatever personal score he thinks he’s settling."

She extended her hand formally. "You have my word that this hearing will be conducted fairly and according to proper procedure. Pierce may have forgotten what those look like, but I haven’t."

As Alex shook her hand, he had the distinct impression that Miranda Whitman saw far more than she was letting on... and that might not necessarily be a bad thing.
