After forcing back the first wave, the corridor fell into a brief, uneasy lull where only the sound of distant movent and the faint echo of reinforcents gathering beyond the walls filled the space. The group did not linger in it. Lucas imdiately adjusted their position, signaling for them to move while the gap still existed, because in a place like this, silence after an alarm was never safety, it was preparation for the next strike.

They regrouped quickly, the emperor still at the center of their formation, supported carefully as they shifted through a side passage that Patrick identified on instinct. Vorde moved ahead to scout intersections, Murray and Darmian covered the rear, while Wesley and Bartho stayed close enough to respond to any sudden breach. Lucas remained near the emperor, his focus divided between their imdiate surroundings and the weakening condition of the man they were extracting.

The castle was changing now.

Footsteps were no longer random.

They were converging.

Structured.

Intentional.

Routes were being sealed behind them, and new patrols were appearing ahead faster than before, suggesting the entire dungeon network was being actively rerouted to trap them deeper inside rather than allow retreat. It was becoming increasingly clear that the alarm had not just alerted guards, it had activated a full containnt protocol.

As they turned into another corridor, Bartho suddenly slowed.

"Wait," he said quietly.

The group paused instantly, tension sharpening as they all listened.

Bartho had turned slightly toward the emperor, noticing sothing subtle in his expression, a faint movent of his lips, as if he had been trying to speak but lacked the strength or clarity to be heard over the chaos.

Bartho stepped closer, lowering his voice. "Say that again."

The emperor’s breathing was uneven, but his eyes were open now, more aware than before. He forced the words out slowly, each one strained but deliberate.

"There... is... a way out."

Lucas’s gaze sharpened imdiately.

Bartho raised a hand slightly, signaling the others to remain silent.

The emperor continued, voice rough but clearer now as he gathered what strength remained. "A route... only I know. Not in their records. Not in the dungeon map."

Patrick’s expression shifted slightly. "A sealed passage?"

The emperor gave a faint nod.

Wesley stepped closer. "Where."

The emperor’s eyes moved faintly toward the direction they had just co from, then slightly downward, as if orienting himself internally rather than visually. "Beneath... the lower containnt layer... there is an old access path. It predates the current structure. It was never removed... only forgotten."

Darmian frowned. "Forgotten by them or hidden by you."

A faint, bitter exhale left the emperor. "Hidden, they don’t know it exists."

Silence settled briefly as the weight of that statent sank in. A path that was not on their maps ant sothing critical, an exit that bypassed the very system currently locking down the dungeon.

Lucas studied him for a mont, then spoke calmly. "Can you lead us there."

The emperor closed his eyes briefly, then opened them again with difficulty. "If I can move... yes."

Patrick tightened his grip slightly to steady him. "Then we move."

Wesley nodded once. "Better than being trapped here."

Bartho turned slightly, already scanning the corridor ahead. "We will need to break formation pressure if they close in again."

Murray added quietly, "Then we do not stop."

Lucas looked at the emperor one last ti, assessing not just the claim but the condition behind it, then gave a single decisive nod.

"Lead," he said.

And without wasting another second, they adjusted their formation, shifting from escape under pursuit to escape under guidance, following a man who had just offered them a path that did not exist on any map they had studied.

Patrick and Darmian took the weight of the emperor between them, each of his arms draped over their shoulders as they supported him forward, careful not to jolt him more than necessary while still maintaining enough speed to stay ahead of the tightening pursuit. His steps were uneven and weak, but with their support he was able to move, even if only just, and every few seconds they adjusted their grip to keep him stable as the corridor narrowed and the pressure of the castle’s response continued to build behind them.

Lucas and Vorde led at the front, moving with controlled urgency, scanning every junction ahead for movent or signs of interception while guiding the direction based on both mory and instinct. Lucas’s gaze remained sharp, constantly shifting between routes, while Vorde’s familiarity with hidden paths and smuggling routes allowed him to anticipate angles others might miss, giving them at least a slight edge in choosing which turns were viable under pressure.

Behind them, Wesley and Murray maintained the rear, constantly checking for pursuit, ready to intercept any sudden breach before it could reach the core group. Their presence acted as a moving barrier, ensuring that nothing closed in unnoticed, and every few monts one of them would adjust position to reinforce the line of retreat as the sound of distant footsteps grew louder through the stone corridors.

Bartho stayed just behind Patrick and Darmian, close enough to support if the emperor faltered but also positioned to observe both sides of the corridor at once, his attention divided between the structure of the dungeon and the increasing probability of another interception point forming ahead. His role was less about direct engagent now and more about awareness, ensuring they were not funneled into another dead end like before.

The group moved as a single coordinated unit, not scattered but tightly structured around the emperor as the central point, every position deliberate and reinforced by trust built through preparation and necessity. The corridor they were following grew older as they advanced, the stonework subtly changing, less reinforced, less uniform, suggesting they were moving away from the newer dungeon architecture and toward sothing that predated the current castle structure.

The emperor, despite his weakened state, kept his head slightly raised, focusing on direction, occasionally giving small corrections in movent that Lucas imdiately acknowledged and passed forward without breaking pace. Each instruction brought them deeper into unfamiliar territory, but also slightly away from the main pressure zones forming behind them.

The sound of pursuit did not fade.

If anything, it expanded.

But they were relieved they were no longer moving blindly through known containnt routes.
