Sparta: Many childrens, Many Blessings, Starting from the Gladiator Chapter 28 28
The afternoon training was even more brutal.
The instructor no longer just simulated. He started real fighting — although they used wooden swords, the force was full. Getting hit once would leave a bruise.
Lynx got a few more wounds on his arms, but they didn't injure the tendons or bones.
Octavius was surrounded and attacked by Gisco and Amir. He took several hits on his back, but his skin was thick and his flesh was tough. He didn't even hum.
Marcus was the most miserable. He was used as a substitute for "Anvil" by Crixus and took several solid sword hits. He walked with a limp.
But no one called to stop.
Everyone knew that the sweat and blood shed today were to shed less blood tomorrow — or, to be able to bleed tomorrow while still alive.
In the evening, training finally ended.
The gladiators collapsed by the edge of the sand pit, panting like broken bellows.
The instructor was also exhausted. His voice had gone hoarse. He waved his hand to dismiss them.
Lynx didn't leave imdiately.
He sat by the edge of the sand pit, looking at the short sword in his hand, reviewing today's training in his mind.
Octavius's net, the timing of throwing it beca more and more accurate.
Marcus's dual swords, although still raw, could already simulate seven or eight tenths of "Viper's" speed.
Crixus's brute force was indeed terrifying. If he could really pin down "Anvil" and "Hamr", the pressure would be much smaller.
But it was still not enough.
Nodis had six people.
And two more hidden in the dark, ready to enter the field at any ti.
Who were those two? What weapons did they use? From which direction would they co?
The unknown was the most dangerous.
"Lynx."
A voice ca from behind.
Lynx turned his head and saw Lucretia standing at the entrance of the training ground, waving at him.
He stood up and walked over.
Lucretia was dressed very plainly today. Her face didn't look good either.
She pulled Lynx to the corner of the wall and lowered her voice: "I have news."
"Speak."
"The other two people from Nodis have been confird."
Lucretia said. "They are a pair of twins from Gaul, nicknad 'Shadow'. They don't use conventional weapons. They use flying knives and rope darts — long-range harassnt, specifically to disrupt the opponent's rhythm."
Flying knives and rope darts…
Lynx frowned slightly.
This kind of weapon was rarely seen in the arena because it was not as entertaining as the clash of blades and swords, but its practicality was extrely strong.
If that pair of twins kept wandering around the edge of the battlefield, using flying knives for sneak attacks and rope darts to trip people, it would indeed be troubleso.
"When will they enter the field?"
"Ten minutes after the performance match starts."
"The referees have already been bribed. At that ti they will deliberately leave a flaw and let them enter from the hidden door at the southwest corner."
Southwest corner.
Lynx rembered it.
"Also,"
Lucretia continued. "Batiatus t with the boss of Nodis this afternoon. The two talked in the study for an hour. When they ca out, both their faces looked bad. I overheard a few words. They seed to be arguing about… the split."
"Split?"
"Yes. Nodis thinks their chances of winning are high and demands a higher share of the bet. Batiatus disagrees. The two had a quarrel."
Lucretia looked at him. "Lynx, I feel… tomorrow's performance match might not just be a performance match."
"What do you an?"
"Batiatus and Nodis may both want to use this opportunity to eliminate the other."
Lucretia lowered her voice even more. "Nodis wants to win, wants to prove they are stronger than Batiatus, wants to swallow his business. Batiatus also wants to win, wants to step on Nodis to rise, wants to gain favor from more nobles."
She paused. "You gladiators are just pieces on their chessboard. If you win, it's their achievent. If you lose, it's your lives."
Lynx didn't speak.
He had known this long ago.
From the first day he transmigrated to this world, he knew he was a chess piece.
But now, he wanted to jump off the chessboard.
"I know."
"Thank you for telling these things."
Lucretia looked at him with complex eyes: "Lynx, tomorrow… be careful. If possible, don't die."
"I won't die."
Lynx looked into her eyes. "I promised you I would take you away."
Lucretia's eyes reddened. She nodded and hurriedly turned to leave.
Lynx returned to the edge of the sand pit. Gisco and the others had already gone back.
He sat alone for a while. Only when the sky was completely dark did he get up and return to his cell.
When passing Octavius's cell, he stopped.
The door was ajar. Heavy breathing ca from inside.
Lynx pushed the door open.
Octavius was sitting on the straw mat, wiping the bruises on his arms with a piece of cloth.
Seeing Lynx co in, he raised his head.
"Sothing the matter?"
"Asking you a question."
Lynx sat down opposite him. "If we win the performance match tomorrow and get our freedom… where do you plan to go?"
Octavius was silent for a mont and said: "Back to Germania."
"Can you go back?"
"Even if I can't, I have to go back."
Octavius said in a deep voice. "That is my ho. My clansn may all be dead, but… I want to go back and take a look."
Lynx nodded: "What if you can't go back?"
"Then find a place and live quietly."
Octavius looked at him. "Why are you asking this?"
"I want to make a deal with you."
"Tomorrow's performance match, if we win, we leave together. After leaving Capua, you can go wherever you want. But before that, we need to look out for each other."
Octavius stared at him: "Why choose ?"
"Because you are strong."
Lynx said honestly. "And you don't want to be soone else's blade. People like that are worth cooperating with."
Octavius smiled, showing his white teeth.
"Fine. Cooperate."
The two bumped fists.
After leaving Octavius's cell, Lynx went to the dical room again.
Mira was organizing the dicine box. Seeing him co in, she quickly stood up.
"Why did you co? Are you injured?"
"No."
Lynx sat down. "Ca to see you and ask about Marcus's condition."
"He is much better."
Mira said. "Although he got new injuries from training today, his spirit is good. He said… he wants to go on the field with you guys tomorrow."
Lynx nodded: "He does need to go on the field. We need him to pin down 'Viper'."
Mira bit her lip: "Lynx, tomorrow… you must be careful. I heard Nodis's side…"
"I know."
Lynx interrupted her. "Twins, 'Shadow', flying knives and rope darts."
Mira was stunned: "How do you know?"
"I have my channels."
"Mira, after the performance match starts tomorrow, find an opportunity to leave the training ground and wait near the dock. If you see us co out, follow us. If you don't see us…"
He paused. "If you don't see us, find a way to leave Capua yourself. I left so money for you. It's enough for you to live for a while."
He took out a small cloth bag from his bosom. Inside were the remaining denarii, about seven or eight coins.
Mira didn't take it. Her eyes reddened instead: "I don't want money. I want you to live."
"I will live."
Lynx held her hand. "But we have to prepare for the worst."
Mira looked at him. Tears fell uncontrollably.
Lynx gently hugged her.
"Don't cry. Trust ."
"I trust you."
Mira buried her face in his chest. "I have always trusted you."
The two hugged for a while before Lynx let her go.
"I should go back. We have to set off for the arena early tomorrow morning."
"Mm."
Mira wiped her tears. "I will wait for you."
Lynx nodded and turned to leave.
At the door, Mira suddenly called him back.
"Lynx."
"Hmm?"
"No matter what the result is tomorrow…"
Mira looked at him with firm eyes. "I will wait for you. I will always wait."
Lynx's heart ward. He smiled.
"Good."
With that, he pushed the door open and walked out.
