"Over in Yanjing, Wu Mian and Guang Lingzi, along with so others, are holding things together. Dragon Soul is also getting involved. For now, Hua Muyun remains unaffected, but the longer this drags on, the worse it is for the old man."
"Anyone capable of taking action against Hua Muyun must have connections at the top. The target isn't him but our Xiao Family." Xiao Lin took a deep breath and turned to Dan Ning. "You still have a chance to back out."
"I must reclaim the Dan Clan's honor!" The speaker was Dan Qing, her eyes burning with fire. Xiao Lin stared at her in a daze.
"What about you?" Xiao Lin looked at Dan Qing and asked Dan Ning.
"The Dan Clan is indispensable to the three northeastern provinces; Dan Ning can't do without Dan Qing." From the mont Xiao Lin had spoken candidly, Dan Ning's decision had remained unchanged.
At four in the morning, a team of uniford police officers, guns drawn, burst into a residential ho under command. Those still asleep were jarringly roused from their beds, their panicked cries disturbing the neighbors, and in an instant, the lights illuminated the slowly lightening dawn.
The intruders seed unfazed by the disturbance they caused among the citizens. They shouted orders for the person in the bed to get dressed and co with them. anwhile, on the other end of the sa house, another resident disturbed by the commotion simply opened the window and looked out.
"What's going on outside?"
"It's not safe here, take the first morning flight back!" The man at the window watched the police in front of the house, speaking as if to himself, his mouth moving. The man drew the blinds and turned around, gazing deeply at the beautiful woman before him. "Clan Leader, your risky trip here makes things difficult for ." Dan Ning rested his hands on the window fra.
"Are you regretting agreeing to the alliance with Xiao Lin?"
"It's not regret, but we shouldn't be so rash without understanding the situation clearly." Dan Ning felt a lot of helplessness toward Dan Qing. He had been searching for this woman for five years, from knowing nothing to thinking about her daily, and this feeling was very subtle. "Xiao Lin is your benefactor; I'll never forget that. But that doesn't an the entire Dan Clan should be sacrificed."
"If you have objections, why didn't you bring them up earlier?" Dan Qing blinked, unable to understand Dan Ning's reasoning. Instinct told her she should trust Xiao Lin, and it was the right thing to do.
"Because you trust that one called Xiao Lin, and he's quite a formidable figure."
"In that case, there's no reason to hesitate. Besides, I'm not going back. Xiao Lin saved my mother and ; he brought back my life. Even if the Dan Clan were down to one person, I would help him without reservation. Dan Ning, without Xiao Lin, there wouldn't be a . I hope you rember that, if you still recognize as the Dan Clan's leader!"
Dan Ning couldn't argue; he lowered his eyes and sighed. "The police just took away soone from one of our bases. I believe they'll be coming for us soon. The background of the three northeastern provinces is unknown here; it'll be dangerous for you to stay."
"I'm just a visiting tourist." Dan Qing blinked at Dan Ning. "I promised not to interfere in what you and Xiao Lin are doing. Is that acceptable?"
Seeing Dan Qing's innocent expression, Dan Ning dialed a number. "I'll give you an address shortly. At noon, take a cab and stay there. If anything happens, I'll have soone contact you. Since you're a tourist, play the part." Patting Dan Qing's hair with indulgence, Dan Ning sighed once more.
"Thank you!" Dan Qing pressed her face into Dan Ning's palm sincerely.
The first rays of sunlight filtered through the sheer curtains, illuminating every windowsill when Mo Luo stood in front of an all-white building. After tidying his clothes and ensuring everything was in place, he knocked on the door.
A golden retriever dashed out, barking at the stranger, and Dan Ning quickly erged to send the beloved dog back indoors. "Director Mo Luo, what brings you here this early?" He glanced at the empty space behind Mo Luo. "Co in and sit."
"No need, I'm not here for a visit." Even in the face of the eastern three provinces, Mo Luo felt a bit uneasy.
"If it's not a visit, then it's business?" Dan Ning raised an eyebrow challengingly, coldly eyeing Mo Luo.
"Uh... it's like this: we just completed a raid and captured so criminals. So we'd like to ask you to co back and assist with the case." Mo Luo quickly explained.
"Give a mont!" Dan Ning went upstairs, changed clothes, and ca back down. "Can I have my lawyer present?"
"We'll provide you with a lawyer."
At Palermo Police Station, a place you could only pass by and never enter, Dan Ning sat in a room about ten square ters in size. A table roughly 1.5 ters long and 50 centiters wide lay before him. Since Director Mo Luo brought him back to the station, he hadn't seen any lawyer or been questioned by anyone. After confiscating his communication devices, he had been kept in this room illuminated only by a single incandescent light, silent and monotonous!
Dan Ning closed his eyes to rest, the ti seemingly at a standstill in this place, oblivious to whether it was day or night. In the enclosed space, only his breathing and heartbeat were distinctly audible.
A clang sounded, and Dan Ning lifted his head, barely opening a slit in his eyes. He expected to see that silly, timid Edmund or Director Mo Luo, but he was instead t by a middle-aged man aged forty to forty-five. He had a crew cut, wore fraless glasses, stood about 175 centiters tall, and was slightly overweight.
"A well-known arms dealer from Sicily, and the eastern provinces?" The man's voice was low-pitched, favoring a slightly higher inflection at the end.
Dan Ning scrutinized this Chinese man, who neither appeared rigid nor as honest and sincere as his looks suggested. The first impression this man gave was that of a plain, ordinary person, the type who would blend into a crowd without a trace, devoid of any distinctive features or lasting impact.
"Who are you?" A standard opening, Dan Ning asked the question fittingly.
"You must be surprised that Director Mo Luo isn't here," the middle-aged man casually pulled out the chair opposite Dan Ning. "First of all, I apologize for seeing you in such conditions. You should know it's quite unsafe outside, and out of necessity, I've had to adopt this thod to communicate with you properly."
Isn't such verbose speech rather pedantic for soone of plain appearance? "Are you engaged in academic research? I'm a straightforward person, so speak directly." (To be continued.
