"Do we really need to think this through?" Yao Zheng leaned back in his leather chair and snorted at Xiao Lin. "Didn't you just say he was using Secretary Li's na to engage in unsightly deeds with those girls in the club? Isn't this the best evidence?"

"District Chief Yao, here I hope you can correct your statent," Xiao Lin listened to his unabashed words and his face darkened.

"Are you trying to teach how to speak?" Yao Zheng discreetly shifted the topic, confronting Xiao Lin with aggression. "Know your place, telling how to talk here—do you have that right?"

"Ah, you are the district chief, and I'm just a bodyguard, naturally without the right to dictate how you speak. It's my oversight, and I hope District Chief Yao will understand and not hold it against soone as rough as myself." Faced with Yao Zheng's attitude, Xiao Lin didn't flip out but courteously admitted his mistake, leaving Yao Zheng without an angle to blow things out of proportion, stunned where he sat.

"Hmph, as long as you understand." Yao Zheng found a way to back out, adding coldly.

"At the ti, Secretary Li was involved with the girls from the club, not doing anything inappropriate, which I hope District Chief Yao understands."

"That's not the point! I've already seen this person; although he bears a strong resemblance to my secretary, you've heard that the real one is in the hospital now, so there's no room for argunt. Thus, this person is a fraud impersonating a high official. I'm handing him over to Ji Weihua to handle." Yao Zheng spoke with fierce determination. "Such audacity—I want to see who is bold enough to orchestrate this."

"District Chief Yao!" Xiao Lin pressed down Yao Zheng's hand as he reached for the phone. "I can't hand this person over to you just yet."

"What do you an by this?" Yao Zheng attempted to lift his arm but found it impossible under Xiao Lin's restraint. "Don't forget you're just a bodyguard."

"Well! It doesn't matter, if I say no, then it's no."

"Are you trying to leverage your identity as Dragon Soul?"

"That's not entirely impossible. At the ti, Secretary Li was with a suspect from a drug trafficking case, and due to certain factors, he can't be handed over to you yet."

"Since it happened in our northern district, naturally our district's officers should handle it—you have no right to interfere."

Xiao Lin suddenly chuckled. "District Chief Yao, don't you find your stance sowhat overly resolute? Since you've already disavowed this person, naturally he falls under the jurisdiction of the local precinct for examination. In the whole procedure, as a district chief, rashly intervening doesn't seem right, does it?"

"You..." Yao Zheng was rendered speechless by Xiao Lin's words, unable to find a retort.

"District Chief Yao, can't you recognize as Li Zhenghan? I've fought along with you for four years, yet you don't..."

"Watch out!" Xiao Lin yelled abruptly, lunging toward Li Zhenghan and pressing him to the floor.

Glass shards burst from behind Yao Zheng, a bullet striking where Li Zhenghan had been standing monts ago. Xiao Lin and he rolled on the floor, missing the first attack.

"Hide behind the sofa." Xiao Lin instructed Li Zhenghan, while covering him to the sofa closest to the door, himself reaching the shattered glass area, Yao Zheng hiding under his desk. Pulling open the wrapped curtain, hidden behind it, Xiao Lin surveyed the situation outside.

The bullet had entered from Hengfei Mansion across the street, creating an angled elliptical glass hole, the impact shattering the glass into fragnts, half already fallen on the carpet.

"Are you okay, District Chief Yao?" Across the street was a mirrored building, similar in design to the district governnt building. The optimal shooting range wasn't on the rooftop but in Yan Juanjuan's office; who could access that place freely? Hengfei Mansion was twenty stories high, nearly half taller than the district governnt, complicating the sniper's task. The opponent's accuracy suggests they were not on the top floor.

"I... I'm fine..." Terrified of the gunfire, Yao Zheng was trembling under the desk, seemingly feeling brain matter splash on his face each ti, suppressing the nausea rising in his stomach, blocking himself with a chair.

"The assassin has left, you can co out now." Assured the danger was cleared, Xiao Lin communicated to Yao Zheng under the desk.

"Is it really safe now?" Yao Zheng, skeptical, shrank further into the corner of the desk.

"You can wait a bit longer if you feel unsafe," Xiao Lin said, helping Li Zhenghan up. "District Chief Yao, I have a question: who might know that I brought Secretary Li here today? This assassin's information is very up-to-date—is it an insider? From this, I must reassess this case."

"You an..." Yao Zheng grimaced unstably, climbing out from under the table. "You think I arranged the assassin? How could I do such a thing? Before you ca, I knew nothing about it, more importantly, why would I want to kill him?"

"That's a good question—why would an assassin kill soone impersonating Secretary Li? Isn't that quite intriguing?" Xiao Lin chuckled. "Since it was confird by District Chief Yao, I'll take him away for now. Just a heads-up, this office is really dangerous; always watch your back!"

Xiao Lin subtly pointed at the towering Hengfei Mansion behind Yao Zheng, his insinuation making Yao Zheng retreat to the edge of the sofa, distancing himself from the desk. "This matter requires Ji Weihua's involvent. Even if you are from Dragon Soul, since it involves our northern district, I have the right to know."

Ignoring Yao Zheng, Xiao Lin led Li Zhenghan out of the district governnt building. Ji Weihua's squad rushed in from outside, another gun incident in the district chief's office—second this month. He ran past Xiao Lin without pausing, heading straight for the elevator.

"He really wants to kill !" Li Zhenghan only gained a bit of awareness after sitting in the car, muttering reluctantly.

"It wasn't Yao Zheng," Xiao Lin was almost convinced this person was Secretary Li, and the one in the hospital was soone else. "But after today, I can't assure he won't kill you—your existence now is a threat to him. Do you understand what I'm saying?"

"Admitting is akin to betraying myself, he won't leave as a witness alive, I shouldn't have co to see him, held out hope." (To be continued. If you enjoyed this work, please visit Qidian (qidian) to cast recomndation or monthly votes—your support is my greatest motivation.)
