"Lao Wu, your consolation isn’t comforting at all, but I understand your intention." The northern district won’t turn into a headless fly just because it’s missing its leadership. On the contrary, these leaders’ presence is entirely worthless; Wu Mian was trying to convey this point. "Yao Zheng, after all, was promoted by the old leader. I’ll give him one last chance. If he pleads guilty, he can resign and handle it quietly. If he remains obstinate, we’ll proceed with the judicial process!"
"Yes, Secretary Hua!"
It was rare for Yao Zheng to appear in the office early in the morning. Today, he looked unusually spirited, personally tidying up his office. The desk, usually piled high with various files, was now spotless. He stood with his hands behind his back, looking down at the vehicles passing below.
After returning from Sword, he didn’t carry any negative emotions, and since then, he hadn’t had the chance to see Yan Juanjuan. Although he was in his office now, he knew he had long lost his personal freedom; he was being watched. No one could possibly be Fourth Lord’s n.
During these days, he pondered why Hua Muyun should have had conclusive evidence but had not taken action. Two black sedans slowly drove through the governnt district’s gate. From a high vantage point, it was impossible to see who had gotten out. Yao Zheng dialed the intercom and learned from the security guards that the visitors weren’t from the municipal governnt but rather two or three investors concerned about land transactions seeking the land planning departnt.
Hua Muyun had returned to the city center for two days. What did he intend to do? Why hadn’t he taken any actions? Could it be that he was waiting for him to speak up? No, Yan Juanjuan wouldn’t simply implicate him; maintaining this mindset is mainly because, until the end, Yan Juanjuan hadn’t spoken his na. His confidence derived from his understanding of her, a woman of his own.
The day blurred into twilight under Yao Zheng’s suspicion, when a ssage arrived on his phone that moved him deeply, containing only four words: "Take action tonight!"
He imdiately called back, only to find the phone turned off. At this ti, what did that woman want to do? Yao Zheng tried to contact Ye Zi but realized that aside from her mobile phone number, he had no other ans of reaching her. He slumped into his chair, pondered for a mont, and then grabbed his car keys, rushing out of the office.
During the day, the sun shone brightly, but by nightfall, it was all gloomy. A small sports car sped down the empty road, with a bright full moon hanging overhead. The starless sky made the silver moon look exceptionally eerie. Yao Zheng kept calling Ye Zi, knowing from his understanding of her that once she says sothing, she won’t take it back. Moreover, Fourth Lord’s ruthlessness accurately predicted how he would press Ye Zi to carry out complete eradication.
Ye Zi was just a pawn in Fourth Lord’s hand to lure him in. He never expected to fall for it, but when he realized it, his heart had been ensnared. Any woman could beco a sacrifice under Yao Zheng’s command, but not this one. He didn’t want her to perish just like that; perhaps it’s the unattainable that feels important. Ye Zi’s heart had never been with him, even the feigned compliance was rely a montary impulse.
The Sword emblem was right before him now. Two shadows stood at the top of the tallest building, overlooking everything below. In the silence, there was a trusty exchange of breaths between them. Was it ti to wrap things up? They were all waiting for soone to appear, as if they had foresight. Two people watched a building, the one housing Yan Juanjuan.
"Bro, are you sure she will co?" One shadow drew back the gloves on his hand, fidgeting with the velcro strap again.
Xiao Lin shook his head; he wasn’t certain whether that person would co or not. He expected sothing earth-shattering yet hadn’t anticipated such deadness. Had he overestimated that woman?
"She’s here!" The person beside him nudged him. He picked up the binoculars, and on the other side of the lens, a woman tiptoed closer to the female soldiers’ dormitory. Her tight-fitting clothes accentuated her curves. "Honestly, Yao Zheng’s won all have fantastic bodies; just looking at them makes you want to get laid with them!"
"Looks like you’re the one looking to get laid." Xiao Lin glared at him irritably. The woman under the lens was exploring, and he tightened his gloves, testing the steel cable underfoot.
"Hey, I’m a man, alright? Not interested in getting my backside laid, but speaking of it, it’d be doing it to soone else."
Yan Juanjuan kept her eyes closed, not asleep despite the seemingly static room devoid of everything, sensing not the ticking of the clock but the pounding of her heart.
Neither Hua Muyun nor anyone else had adjudicated her, a tornt that prevented her from peacefully waiting.
Death was an inevitable outco, but she longed to see her son one last ti. Knowing that getting Hua Muyun to agree to take care of her son was challenging enough, she hadn’t spoken up in the end.
Yan Juanjuan shifted her body, glimpsing a figure passing by the window amid the indistinct darkness. She blinked her eyes open to see a face.
"Ah!" Yan Juanjuan scread as she sat up in bed, Ye Zi’s face appearing before her; was she dreaming?
"Sister Yan, did you sleep well?" Ye Zi swayed her body up and down, never letting her heels touch the ground. Her gentle voice reached Yan Juanjuan’s ears as she stared at the person before her. The door hadn’t budged; how did she get in? Had the guards outside already...
"How are you here? Have the people outside..."
"Hehe, I just put them to sleep, didn’t want them to interrupt our sisterly chat." Ye Zi leapt onto Yan Juanjuan’s bed. The temporary holding room had only a bed that hadn’t been replaced. Ye Zi bounced on it a few tis before settling down. "ssy bed, much more comfortable than Ji Weihua’s."
"Have you seen them?"
"Yeah, they’re much more obedient than you, sister. They know to keep their mouths shut, but you seem to talk too much."
"What do you want?"
"Sister, you’re making it difficult for . Killing you wouldn’t help; you told that old Hua guy a lot, right? But unfortunately, he hasn’t done anything. Yao Zheng is still happily standing in his office, while you’ve beco a prisoner." Ye Zi looked at Yan Juanjuan regretfully. "I an, sister, why are you so foolish to believe those officials? Do you really think they’ll stand up for you? They’re all in it together, you know?"
"Stop with the nonsense. If you’re here to kill , then do it!"
"Hmm, how do you know I’m here to kill you? Maybe I’m here to save you?"
"You’ll save ? Don’t be ridiculous. Everyone knows Fourth Lord’s people are ruthless." Yan Juanjuan snorted coldly, fearlessly staring at Ye Zi.
"Hey, don’t talk about your own sister like that. At least we both served Yao Zheng, shouldn’t we get along?" Ye Zi said, reaching out to touch Yan Juanjuan’s face, but Yan Juanjuan avoided her.
"Are you truly so kind-hearted?"
"Fourth Lord said, if you return the goods you took, she’ll ensure your safety. Right now, I’m here to take you away." Ye Zi pursed her lips, teasing a boring woman was utterly uninteresting.
"I don’t know where the goods are." Inside, Yan Juanjuan understood what Ye Zi ant by "goods." Without them, she might have been dead long ago.
"Sister, this is not the ti to be so stubborn. You can’t take them, can’t turn them into money; what’s the point of hiding them? Isn’t exchanging them for your life a good deal?" Ye Zi suddenly grabbed Yan Juanjuan’s hair, pulling her towards her. "I don’t want to hurt you, so you’d better be smart."
With her scalp hurting terribly, Yan Juanjuan tried to ease the pain by pulling at the spot being grasped, but Ye Zi’s grip was too strong for her to resist.
"Wait!" Xiao Lin grabbed Hua Qingyi, both hiding in the shadows, peering inside.
"Why?"
"I have a better plan."
Hua Qingyi looked at Xiao Lin puzzled, saying nothing more.
"Didn’t you guys set the North Palace on fire and took the goods, blaming it on ?" Yan Juanjuan gave up struggling; she couldn’t outfight Ye Zi, so why waste her strength?
"We set the North Palace on fire?" Ye Zi tilted her head, releasing Yan Juanjuan. "Fourth Lord wouldn’t do that."
"Not you guys? Then it must be Yao Zheng; you should go ask him for the goods."
Smack! Yan Juanjuan’s face swelled up imdiately; she covered the cheek that was struck, glaring at Ye Zi. "Trying to fool ? Yao Zheng doesn’t have the goods; you’re just trying to keep them for yourself, right?"
"Whether or not I took those goods, you know best. Weren’t you there when that certain soone devoured them? You were the one who sent people to the North Palace and also killed them, yet now you’re questioning . Isn’t that ridiculous?" Yan Juanjuan’s voice grew sharp. "Alright, aren’t you supposed to take to see Fourth Lord? Then let’s go; I still want to clear things up. Anyway, my life is already at on the chopping block, what am I afraid of!"
"Are the goods really not with you?" Seeing Yan Juanjuan’s resolute denial, Ye Zi hesitated. "You’d better be truthful." As the words fell, she slapped Yan Juanjuan, causing her to collapse powerlessly onto the bed.
Ye Zi swiftly carried her out the door quietly. The two hiding in the shadows nodded to each other and followed behind. Yao Zheng stopped the car two kiloters from the sword, lit a cigarette, and stared at the door for a long ti. He re-started the vehicle and turned back. (To be continued.
