Kyle was slightly embarrassed right now.
Inside his room, he was sitting on his bed, almost naked. An extrely beautiful woman was kneeling before him, her hand slowly cleaning his wound with careful precision.
His knee has been nearly scraped off, and the inner tissues are peeking out.
Truly, if any normal girl had seen this, they would have covered their eyes instantly. But not this woman. Yes, she was evidently concerned for him but she knew what would happen if she just sat there and sulked about it.
The dic had tied her hair in a rough bun so it would not hinder her work, but because of the haste, a few wild silvery strands had fallen over her forehead, giving her an allure he could hardly look away from.
Her lips were slightly parted as she blew over the wound every ti she applied the antiseptic.
Going down, her white shirt accentuated her curves in the most dangerous way, especially when she leaned forward like that.
Kyle had to keep himself distracted with his thoughts, so he asked, "Umm... by the way, how closely do you know my brother?"
Veronica humd and glanced up. "Blake? We have t a few tis during conferences. We have a few throughout the year where all high ranking Nightwalkers gather to share data and important intel about any new changes they might have co across."
Kyle humd. "Is my brother a high ranking officer?" He had heard from the system that Blake was a strong warrior, but he was unaware of the whole ranking structure.
Veronica calmly explained, "There are five major ranks among us, starting with trainees, who are also regarded as Common-grade. We usually send them to clean up areas after battles or clear mass congregations of Nightmares in a section."
She paused and threw the bloodied cotton pad into the bin before taking another and spraying so antiseptic on it, then bringing it to his injured knee.
Kyle barely stopped himself from hissing at the burn as Veronica continued, "Then cos the Second-grade, those who have the skills and experience to fight against Majins or the Knull dwellers of their range."
"Range... you an?" Kyle asked, confused.
"Well, a Majin is not a monster’s na but a whole class of warrior demons. They do not have a special skill like the ones above them, but they are far stronger than Nightmares and can also team up with fellow Majins to corner soone."
Kyle nodded in understanding. As she said, the monsters he fought before the Ghoul’s arrival had enough battle intelligence to nearly make him retreat. Thankfully, they had not appeared at the sa ti, or things would have turned ugly much sooner.
"Then cos the First-grade, like the girl you fooled that day. While it is not a proven fact, it is generally believed that it takes five Second-grade warriors to defeat one First-grade. And a First-grade could take on a ghoul-ranked Knull resident."
Kyle humd in acknowledgent.
Layena was a strong warrior. There was no doubt about that.
When she defeated a ghoul, it had appeared as if that being was almost as weak as a Majin. However, when Kyle himself faced one alone, targeted by that ghoul, he realized how calmly Layena had taken that battle and how easily she had dominated the field.
"Then co people like and your brother. We are regarded as Special-ranked. We stand above the usual grades not only because of our skills and experience, but also because we can use this."
She suddenly snapped her fingers, and a blue illumination surrounded her hand.
"Woah... what is this?" He could tell it was Genesis, but the way she manipulated it so voluntarily and with such control shocked him.
"This is called Spark, the physical manifestation of Genesis that allows one to beco a walking poison to Knull residents."
She got up and told him to lie down.
In his excitent, he did not even ask why and simply lay down.
Veronica climbed over him, making his breath hitch, and began cleaning the wound on his shoulder.
Kyle might have thought she was completely unaffected by the intimacy they shared if his eyes had not caught the faint redness dusting the tips of her ears.
She cleared her throat and muttered, "This could only be achieved when you have absolute mastery over your sorcery. And then there are Archons..."
Kyle was barely able to listen to what she was saying given how close they were.
Her light cologne washed over his senses, surrounding him with her presence.
Veronica looked down at him, her heart beating hard and fast as she asked in a low whisper, "Are you listening?"
Kyle took a deep breath and told her, "Veronica... this is getting dangerous. I think you should stop now."
Veronica felt as if her heart might burst out of her chest when she saw that heated gaze.
Kyle was still in control of his emotions, but the way things were unfolding, he knew everything could beco really awkward with a single mistake.
Veronica, however, did not back away. Instead, she asked, "Why is it a problem? I thought you were single now."
Kyle narrowed his eyes. "And how do you know that?"
Veronica froze in place. Averting her eyes, she stuttered, "T-That..."
"As I thought. The woman standing holding such a dignified position is actually a stalker behind the curtains."
Veronica’s cheeks turned red as she protested in embarrassnt, "I am not stalking... I just asked around a bit and got the information easily."
Kyle grinned. "Is that not considered stalking?"
Veronica groaned. "You... are reading way too much into it, ah!"
Kyle suddenly pushed her onto the bed and climbed on top of her.
His knees bracketed her sides, his hands resting on either side of her face as he told her, "You are trusting far too much for soone who only knew years ago when I was just a kid. You are being naive now, Veronica."
The silver-haired woman looked straight into his eyes and said, "You think I cannot protect myself if you try sothing with ?"
Kyle chuckled and shook his head.
He raised his right hand and slowly brought it to her face.
She pressed her lips together and closed her eyes.
"It’s not about whether you can do sothing..." He gently traced her temple, letting his finger slide down her cheek before muttering, "It’s about... will you do anything even if I tried?"
Veronica slowly opened her eyes, her usually stern gaze now glassy as she muttered, "Y-You..."
Kyle heaved a sigh and got up.
Sitting at the edge of the bed, he realized his heart was beating fast too, not only because of how dangerously the situation escalated...but because, just now, the way she called out...it reminded him of soone.
*Ding*
They both flinched as the doorbell rang.
Kyle glanced at Veronica before standing up and approaching the door.
Taking a deep breath, he asked, "Who is it?"
A hesitant voice responded, "I-It’s ."
"...!" Kyle’s eyes widened.
There was no doubt about it.
Amanda.
